I would bring the puppy up the the bells, say "gotta go?" or whatever phrase you're going to use, take their paw to show them how to ring the bells, then immediately take them out to potty. It worked with Panda and Kaytee. I'd use a leash to take them out though so they associate the bells with strictly business and not play time. Let them potty, then back in the house.
Two things I discovered with the bells... The dogs' enthusiastically pawing at the bells took the paint off the door. The dogs found that ringing the bells immediately opened doors to get outside... it became a game. But they're great if you have a dog that's hard to read... one that's subtle in telling us they need to go. |

I've know people who taught their dogs to tug on a bell pull. I taught Jack to nose the bells. Since DH's hearing is getting worse, I wish I had gotten a bigger bell and mounted on a stand and taught Jack how to pull the lanyard I'm the only one who hears the bells |
Lots of threads on this if you do a search but here's one to start with:

We have the sleigh bells on our door, like the kind you would find during Christmas time.
Each time before I took the dogs out when they were puppies, I used my key word 'potty' and guided the pup's nose to the bells. When they would tap the bells and make the jingle, I would praise them, give them a small treat and take them out. It was surprisingly simple for both my lab and OES to pick it up. I'm not any sort of dog trainer either, but it worked for me, and the sleigh bells are pretty loud so can be heard well. Happy 4th everyone! |

I have the sleigh bells too - and taught Maggie the coonhound to jingle them with her nose. She was the one who stood silently by the door. If you weren't there to see her, you found a puddle....... |
Sleigh bells here too, but wish they were louder. |
