He does eat raw beef femur bones, and is fine, but I'm worried about the pork. Should I be? What, if anything, would you do? And all this time I thought he was Kosher! |
|
Deb, be grateful they were raw.
Mine have done the same (gee, what a shock )and all been just fine. Keep an eye on him but I wouldn't panic. Sybil would like Pirate to know that raw pizza is also highly recommended. <she would also like to offer him a high-five on his recent culinary theft success > Here's my recommendation: put meat you're thawing in the microwave. Not to nuke it (though you could do that), but because most OES have not figured out how to get the microwave door open. Yet. Kristine |
arent they thieves! hope everything works out ok. Summer is following our tortoise round the garden and eating what he does! dandelions, grass, you name it she eats it! |
I was thinking maybe some bread to cushion and absorb~
Bland diet just in case! I am sure he will be fine though. Betty my foster just helped herself to some enchiladas While my good dogs sat back and didn't touch a thing (Need a "yeah right" emoticon!) |
Deb, do you realize how many points he ate today? I don't expect good results at this week's weigh-in. By the way, we had your Ground Beef Cas. tonight, with a couple of modificatios (whole wheat pasta and ground turkey.) It was excellent! That one is a keeper. In fact I will be passing it on at my meeting tomorrow. |

This thread reminds me of a joke I heard a long time ago -- really it was so long that I don't remember all the various breed references, but ... well you'll see... (I've also heard different variations, but this fit my OES at the time perfectly)
How many dogs does it take to change a lightbulb? Well the answer seems to vary depending on the breed. Golden Retriever: Sun is out. It's a beautiful day. Why worry about a light bulb? Rottweiler: Make me! Lab: Can I? Can I? Huh? Please? Pick me! Pick me! Can I? (this is where I can't remember the different answers... except) OES: Huh? That was a lightbulb I just ate? |
raw pork is actually good for them, considedred a very good food choice actually. I would think white bread could cause bloat. Expect some loose stools, but he should be fine. (oh and skip his dinner ) |

White bread causes bloat??? I have never heard that, why would it cause bloat? We have always advised clients to feed bread when a strange object has been added to the diet! We do it all the time when somebody gets into something. Well, we do not eat white bread so, I guess we give potato bread (of course I know nothing about a raw diet so....) |
We thaw meat in the microwave too. |

I use the microwave for secure room-temperature storage. |
Valerie wrote: got sheep wrote: We thaw meat in the microwave too. I use the microwave for secure room-temperature storage. Yes - that too! My starter mix for the amish friendship bread (in a gallon ziplock and needs to be at room temp) lives in the microwave. |
I learnt years ago not to leave frozen meat on the bench for thawing just way tooooooooo tempting.
Good idea with the Microwave to stop sniffing, anxiously awaiting mom to dissapear to nick what is on the bench. Gonna try that one too. Let's just hope and pray sheepies dont work out how to wack the open button on the Microwave. My tip is Sybill will be an up and coming mentor on that real soon. If any sheepie can work it out, Sybill can Deb it was raw so I would not worry too much, Just keep an eye on him and when he goes no problems there then should not be a problem, no dinner tonight for Pirate If it was cooked with the bone then I would be more worried then. Can we call Pirate a "Oinker" now that he has a belly full of Pork ? Try a sheepie that ate a cooked Roast chook (chicken) off the bench (I was in a panick after I discovered one missing cooked chook because of the possible problem of all those cooked fine bones in a whole chook) She was fine I was a mess till I knew she was OK and everything passed normally!!!!. |
One of the favorite raw feeds is raw pork necks. Sounds like a dear decided to heat a little further down on the pig. |
So far so good I heard him stirring in the middle of the night and got worried, so I took him out. He pee'd and poo'd. It was too dark out to check it out, so I'll inspect it this morning. I always thought Pirate was a pig and it must be true, if you are what you eat! Guess that me one, too! |
happy to hear all is ok!!!! |

Sure, but you need to get the starter from someone! I wonder how it mails??? Well, I'm sure there is some way to start it from scratch, but I have no idea. It is great stuff, though. The one I have has a bunch of variations for baking it, and they all use different flavors of pudding mix in them. They make great cakes and sweet breads. YUM! The last batch I made (we always do double batches except if I'm giving away one of the starter mixes) was pretty good. For the cake I used cookies and cream pudding and added butterscotch chips and sprinkled chopped pecans on the top. For the breads, I used french vanilla and added craisins (dried cranberries). Both were yummy! I usually bring a loaf of the bread to contribute to our "show potluck" on the weekends we have shows. Next we are going to make the bread with lemon pudding and adding poppyseeds. |
I am always amazed when I read posts about the doggies eating stuff. Max must be very picky...
He wouldn't eat a piece of meat if his life depended on it. The last time we grilled, a hunk of steak fell to the ground, and he turned his nose up at it. He will wrestle me to the ground however, for a taste of cheddar cheese. |
And then there are Jack and Glacie........if it falls to the ground, it's down the gullet immediately. Jack is an ominvore, he'll eat anything, but Glacier is a bit more picky. Her hesitation is Jack's delight. Unfortunately it means they are my side pockets when I cook.
I don't dare take them into the bar with peanut shells on the floor |
Honestly the only think my gueys ever get into is the butter But we have had dogs forever so we always keep everything off the counter - or the dogs out of the kitchen. works for me.
and by the way http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Amish-Friendship-Bread-Starter/Detail.aspx |
I went home for lunch only find a crate full of loose stool, and big sheepdog covered in it. I'm so grossed out. I washed the crate and the Pirate. I gave him imodiam and pumpkin. So, gross. And the sad part is, he has no idea this has anything to do with the delicious pork chops! |
any abrubt change in food will do that to some dogs - it might have been better to let it run its course- so to speak. |

Kristine That's where any meat that needs thawing or cooling after cooking gets left in my kitchen. With two dogs and a cat all hovering and hoovering the place there's no where else safe. |
That would've been my concern, Deb, the loose stool. Any big dietary changes do that to Beaureguard, too. And you're right, no way is he making the connection of feeling bad to those yummy pork chops he ate.
BTW, you should ask Jil sometime about her Bentley who has figured out how to open the microwave. |
How's Pirate today? Pork all passed now?
Hope his tummy has settled down after his gourmet splurge. Poor Ma that's the worse the clean up |
