To shave or not to shave

We live in Sacramento CA and have a 9 month old Sheep/Lab mix. I am not sure if I should shave him to keep him cooler. We are experiencing 100+ days. As our summers go, we will have quite a few more days like this. Should I shave him down? How short should we go? What about sun burns?

PS When do these guys stop growing?

It gets into the 90's here with a heat index of over 100, especially this week. We also have high humidity. I have both my Sheepies in puppy cuts to keep them cooler. Their fur is about 2 1/2 inches long. If you chose to completely shave your dogs I would be mindful of their skin in the sun.

My sheepies always let me know when it's too hot. They b-line it to the door and run into the air conditioning.
I say shave'em down! However, you're right to be concerned about sunburn.

If your mix has typical Old English Sheepdog hair, they have pink skin under white fur that is albino skin and it must have a heavy sunblock on it or you need to leave some hair covering it. The dark hair has pigmented skin so they are less suceptible to burn there.

I suggest you leave about 1 inch of white hair over any pink skin.

Enjoy the warmth if you can!
mine go into the groomer starting today.
one at a time till fri. thats 3
all will get short cuts to keep cool.
we have had a few days in the 90's
but we get humidity here.
much easier for them.
they are ages 2, 2 1/2 and 3 1/2
Thank you for the replies. He does have the Black and White coat, I think because his pops was a pure breed Black Lab. I will be taking him to a grommer (hopefully learn how). Poor guy :( Its HOT!
I'm sure I don't need to say it, but I'm silly this way: Keep lots of fresh cool (not ice cold) water available, too! :D
I vote for just giving a puppy cut so they've got some hair aren't completely bare :)
We do shave ours down close if the summer gets hot, but that's because they are very un-heat adapted. I use baby (spray on) sunscreen for the "pink" areas. :)

He's a cutie, by the way! :hearts: ....couple of years, on the growing
I put mine into Summer Camp cuts since they are constantly in the water or mud. Even my Great Pyr now prefers the shorter cut as an old lady she'd prefer not to carry around her fluff all summer.
I shave mine AND wishing for heat its cold here, or summer is not here
