OFA Certifications and the Search for puppies : )

I just learned a few things that I thought I'd share. First of all, I don't know how often the OFA site is updated, so if you're depending on it solely for hip or other certifications, tread softly, and always contact the breeder for the current certifications! : ) I also learned that Canadian dogs registered with the AKC that have hip certifications, may not have their Canadian Certifications listed on that site? I'm still checking to see why, but I know for a fact that one Canadian dog has been certified, is registered with both the CKC and the AKC, but for some reason, the certification isn't listed?? Is there anyone that can shed some light on this? I was also talking with a Vet who told me that unless you have a qualified Orthopedic Vet do the x-rays, you're liable to not get anything above a "good" or "fair" rating...that your normal Vet just doesn't have the time or knowledge to get the best x-rays. Now this leads me to a question...if x-rays have been done by a regular vet, can someone have them re-done and have the hips re-certified?? Inquiring mind doesn't really NEED to know, but would like to know and is really curious! : )

I had heard this also, the top canadian lines with lots of excellent ratings don't appear on the OFA unless registered there deliberatly, is there a Canadian OFA?

And the ratings themselves... I have read the Pennhip method, 3 x-rays vs 1 to determine the joint laxity etc is done at different leg extension angles and is more accurate, undoubtedly more expensive. I have also read that some dogs that pass the traditional method do not fair as well with Pennhip. We have to be able to accept reality when it comes to health and structure.
There is a Canadian OFA, but all I can find online is the Ontario Federation of Agriculture...not very helpful! LOL! I'll see if I can find some more info on it. I know of at least one Canadian dog who is both CKC and AKC registered and he has had just about every certification in the book done on him...but none of them show up on the OFA site. I don't know if it's a matter of the breeder submitting the info or if the tests themselves vary enough so that Canadian tests aren't allowed? I heard several people commenting on how some of the entries to Westminster hadn't had any certifications done and just wanted to warn everyone that this may just not be true...your best bet is always to get copies of the certifications from the breeder or the office which did them. Like everything in life...don't believe everything you read on line...mistakes are often made! : )
I'll get back to you when I hear back about the CKC!

Those are interesting points. I've mostly been using the database to see which breeders ARE testing their animals. As long as the kennel is showing multigenerations of a good ratings, I'm happy- since I'm not planning on breeding. I'm just after a healthy pup from a responsible breeder. But I didn't know that about the Canadian tests, or the x-ray qualities! Interesting stuff!

I just found out that whether the dog is CkC or AkC, if they have been OFA'd they should show up on that site. I decided to go through the entries for Westminster because all the info, kennel, DL, etc is all there and this is what I came up with for those that don't pop right up for you!
If you do a search on the DL number for CH. Tumbleweed Lambluv's Gala Affair...he doesn't come up. If you do a search on Tumbleweed, he does.
Ch Rollingview Flawless Diamond isn't hip certified...why? Check out the date of birth! They aren't OFA'd until 24 months and this guy isn't two until next month!
Ch To-Jo's Funtastic For Ewe, again...this beauty won't be 2 years old until June!
There's one that I haven't found yet and am fairly certain it's a matter of getting the correct spelling in there : ) Some are registered with apostrophe's, some aren't, some with one name, some with two...
And there's another that probably is so recent that it just hasn't made it up there yet (done in January or Feb. of this year)
This site is GREAT, but you have to use all the searches available and if all else fails...ask the breeder for documentation!
