IMPORTING A DOG

Hi your views on this would be very much appreciated. After awaiting the long 6 months for the rabies titre etc I was so excited at the prospect of finally getting my bitch.Surprise surprise or should I say SHOCK-3 weeks later and she had puppies. My main concern I suppose was that this poor girl had not only travelled a great distance coming to a strange place with new owners, she now found herself in the role of a young mother.

Quite shocking. 8O
Where did she come from?
8O Poor baby....
For the moment it is better if I tell you only that she did not come from an EU country.
Holy cow :cow:

That poor, poor sheepie. I would have no idea what to do in that situation. How are you coping? Is she doing OK?
WE ARE ALL COPING FINE THANK GOODNESS BUT BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY IT'S NOT BEEN EASY.HER LIFE HAS BEEN TURNED UPSIDE DOWN ALONG WITH OURS.IF ONLY WE KNEW WHAT SHE WAS REALLY THINKING.I FEEL FOR HER EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY.
Was this a bitch that you were getting from a breeder as part of your own possible breeding program or just a companion pet that you received (surprise!) pregnant?
Did the breeder tell you there was a chance she may be pregnant? Or was this a complete surprise? Accidents have been known to happen but the breeder should have informed you of the possibility.
I don't understand, have you just moved into GB or did you import the dog over ?
APOLOGIES TO EVERYONE FOR NOT EXPLAINING MYSELF A LITTLE BETTER.I purchased my dog from a very reputable breeder abroad.I was not told that she was pregnant.I can assure youthat I would not have allowed her to be put on a long haul flight being over 6 weeks pregnant.
You can't change what happened, you can only go forward. Give her lots of loving, be undemanding for now and get her into a routine... it should make things easier on her if she knows what to expect.

Is she a too young mother or of an age where she's more mentally able to handle this? Was this her first litter or has she had pups before? Is it a smaller litter or large?

Not that any of this really makes a difference because she's now got to deal with it. But you'll help her get through this. Dogs can be amazingly adaptive to life's challenges.
If it's a reputable breeder, it seems like there could be a lot of possible issues, too. Who's the daddy? Who's responsibility are the puppies now? Who's going to whelp, vet and sell the litter?

What a mess. I don't envy you.

Very sorry to hear, I would get back in contact with the breeder and if this is an accident and she came to you in unexpected whelp and if she is under the required age for having a litter (here in Australia a bitch whelping under 18 months of age, severe penalties along with de-registration unless a reasonable EXPLANATION) then if no response from the breeder then report them to that countries Kennel Council. There is also laws to shipping a bitch in whelp as to how pregnant they are when sent, so look into that too for reporting what has happened.

Do they if they know now have any idea who sired the litter? Personally I would ask for compensation BIG TIME from the breeder that shipped her over. So absolutely careless, I know the wait is long for the initial Rabies vacs then usually 120 days before a titre test before they are allowed into Europe or the UK but no excuse for what has happened for your new import girl. Did you get her as a companion or to show etc and later on maybe breed with her? She sounds so young to be having babies, if you brought her as a puppy then had to wait for the rabies shot and titre before she travelled then I would suspect she is around 12 months or younger? Also know such a huge expense exporting/importing and that with the added extra surprise of puppies and the costs there now and her settling in just makes it so much harder for you all and something you never dreamed of at the moment after she arrived..

Best wishes with all the new babies, hope you can register them when you find out who the dog was that got to her and if not then again the breeder is reponsible for the costs of all the DNA testing to find out who the father is if you want to register them & hope she has had all the required health testing, which I presume not due to her possible young age, along with the dog that made her preggie. Very sorry to hear what happened, must of been a huge shock after waiting so long for your girl to arrive.

Dont let the breeder get away with it with no action taken by you, just not right what happened. Regardless of if the breeder is so called reputable, should not of happened to you and your new girl in the first place. :( Just total carelessness on the breeders side of thing. And should not of happened this way as a complete unexpected surprise "FULL STOP"!! The breeder had a duty of care while waiting for her to travel to you and that was not met by the breeder, also if you paid costs to the breeder to run on the bitch till she could travel then you should seek re-imbursement for that as well as everything else that has happened.

:ghug:
Think Lisa has said it all really.

Just one question I have though and I don't mean this to sound crass and you may of had a valid reason for importing a dog, but why did you not get one here ?

I know whats done is done and I wish you all the best. I hope you don't live too near me or I'll be round there in a flash grabbing those lovely babies - good luck

she now found herself in the role of a young mother.

Ooooh... I had missed that. :(
It's so unfair to her and her puppies.
It's human to feel pity for her, but she doesn't pity herself. You two and the pups have a lot to bond over.

In some small way this may help you and "mum" bond. More decades than I care to mention, my DH and I needed to get away for a few days. We conjoled my mother into caring for Sonya. I was young, nieve, and knew nothing about puppies but did suspect Sonya might be pregnant. I didn't mention this to Mom as I figured we'd be back long before they were whelped......nope. Mom came home from work at 11:30pm to see Sonya deliver her first pup. Mom was a pediatric nurse, but wasn't ready for a dog nursery in her back yard.....plus she hates dogs. Not mean hate, just dirty filthy animals who feel dirty, filthy, etc. Skip to the end.....Sonya (who was aloof to all humans) absolutle adored my mother after that. They shared a bond of whelping. (of course my mother didn't recipricate the warm, mush feeling). Sonya would seek out my mother at family functions and stay close.

So maybe your bitch will remember how you supported but didn't fuss over her. Was strong when you really wanted to cry. Dogs need a good role model, not a whimpy upright. Plus now you have puppies to play with.
THANKYOU lisaoes FOR YOUR VERY INDEPTH REPLY TO MY POST.I NOW KNOW WHAT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.Thankyou everyone else for your personal views also.
