Male Maintenance?

I just got back from the vet today. Wendel got a check-up so that we could proceed with his neuter in a few weeks. He checked out beautifully. Good strong heart, clear lungs, bright eyes, good size bladder, etc.

But the vet did notice a discharge coming from Wendel's penis. It appears that he has an infection. Dr. Tadlov gave me some antibiotic cream that he showed me how to administer twice daily for a week.

I felt awful that I hadn't noticed this! Wendel hadn't shown any distress or discomfort. The vet pointed out that there is some discharge on Wendel's backlegs showing that this has been going on for a little while now.

So my question is simply... is there additional maintenance that I need to do for my boy? I've never had a male before, I had never thought that there might be additional care of his penis. (I really struggled to find a more gentle way to type this, and I'm at a loss)

Any insight you could give me would be wonderful. I feel so guilty that he may have had this ongoing and I was unaware.

:lmt: Is Wendel neutered? If not, intact boys do tend to have a little oozing which is normal.

Good luck with administering the cream.
We have him scheduled for his neuter on July 6th.

Eesh... I had no idea. I showed Josh the cream and explained how to administer it and he got really pale. He said that I have to do it.
LOL - I suppose it wouldn't help to tell him to be glad Wendel's not a horse??
Another tip.........keep his penis shaved. Doesn't have to be done every day but if you keep it realitively hair free, say shave it about once a month at least, that will help too.
It can happen after a dog is neutered as well. Oscar has this issue from time to time, and he was neutered at 6 months old. We've cultured it a million times, and sometimes it comes back growing a bacteria, but usually, nothing grows. My vets tend to see this problem (after a neuter) in dogs with allergies, as they say the penis is surrounded by a mucous membrane, and the discharge is additional mucous created by an immune response.

We keep Oscar's penis shaved, to prevent a build-up of urine on the tip. We also wipe his penis with a hypoallergenic baby wipe (vet's suggestion)every time he pees. If there is an infection, of course we treat it with antibiotics, but as I said, it rarely cultures out.

So I know more about Oscar's "boy parts" then I ever cared to  , but why are guys so squeamish about a dog's penis? At least they have similar equipment!

Hopefully, Wendel's troubles in this area will resolve with his neuter.

Laurie and Oscar
What does the infection look like? Ru has dark brown stains in the hairs in the immediate area, but I thought it was just pee stains on the fur. we keep it cut short around that area.
It is odd. It was something I don't think I ever would have noticed. Most of our major areas that the dogs and we congregate to has carpet. When Wendel was on the steel vet table, you could see these three droplets on the table where he was standing. They were his creamy yellow color.

The vet looked on Wendel's inner thighs and saw that there was evidence of dried goop. It was only about an inch long ways, but not even a quarter inch in height at both sections of his back legs.

I did notice that when I was applying the medication, it is creamy at the area. I know, this sounds really gross.

He said it's a bacterial problem going with hygiene. I think it's along the same school of thought behind the circumcision. It's to help aid in bacterial residue. He told me to keep the hairs around the penis trimmed down to avoid more contamination.

Todd too...with the added remark "well, you're the nurse!" 8)
Maybe those boys that have a tendency to lick themselves aren't disgusting as some people may think, they are just making sure that they are clean - okay so he doesn't have to do it in front the mother in law 8O
George had a discharge last summer. The vet gave him an injection that would make his body think he had been neutered and the discharge cleared up.

We had him neutered and we didn't get anymore discharge.
