They let her die

As everyone knows I love my animals so much and give them the best care possible. All the critters see vets regularly and I never hesitate to prioritize when it comes to their care.

One of the bunnies seemed a bit out of sort when I turned off the light in the evening - sitting by herself when the rest of the bunch were in their usual places with their co-horts. These buns live free range in a huge enclosure in my garage and I take them outside daily.

Next morning I became concerned so at 8:30 in the morning I take her outside by herself so I could spend some one on one time with her. As the morning progressed she appeared to be getting worse so I called the bunny vet. I said it was an emergency and in my opinion bunny either had to be euthenized or if anything could possibly be done for her - I was willing to pay. Bunnies are prey animals and will hide their pain so for her to be exhibiting shaking was something very abnormal.

They tell me no openings until 5:20 that night! I said it's an emergency and they said sorry no openings. I can't help but think it bunny had been a cat or dog they may have responded differently but I chose this vet (been there before) as they have experts on staff regarding bunnies.
I said if you get an earlier appt please call me.

I spent hours comforting bunny and watching the time pass slowly. I enter the vets office a 10 mins before my appt. There is someone else there and they take him first. I am asked how is bunny and I say not very good at all, but they still took the other customer.

I wait 20 mins and now am very anxious as I know bunny is in serious trouble - panting, and exhibiting odd behavior. Someone else comes in - a cat that needs innoculations and they pick up kitty and go in the back!!! I want to yell and draw attention to the bunny but no one is at the counter.

Bunny goes into seizure and I get on my hands and knees and stick my hands into the crate. Receptionist comes out and takes bunny but won't allow me into the back although I ask. Nope she says. Vet comes out and tells me bunny died and in a nutshell it's lucky I only had her for a day or two.

I'm astounded as not once did I mention this - no - she was my pet and I had her for three years. I agree to an autopsy. I'm crying so hard I'm unable to think clearly and am grieving for bunny.

I am unable to sleep all night and the next morning I call and say I'm coming in for her body. I tell the receptionist I am disgusted at their response and how all this played out. I wanted a nice peaceful passing with me holding her while I said my goodbyes. Instead I waited all day and they took a cat in that needed innoculations while I told them of the emergency. I'm more angry at myself that I didn't yell and make a fuss while there as my bunny paid the price for my being polite. It was horrible.

Marianne...

I am SOOOO SOOO sorry this happened! :ghug:

I have always had a great fear that noone would take me seriously when I take a pet to be seen and tell them things are not right...

I would still make a fuss if I were you. They need to know there lack of concern was inappropriate.
Im so sorry Marianne  What a horrible thing to have happen. There is absolutely no excuse for this veterinary clinics behavior :x
Oh..Marianne..What a horrible experience!!! What a horrible vet and staff!!!

I am so sorry that your poor bunny had to suffer and you had to watch helplessly.

I am very angry just reading your post. I would be writing a letter to the doctor on how terrible you and your bunny were treated. I would get all my feelings down and voice my disgust at having to watch that poor bunny's suffering.

Again, I am so sorry...terrible....just terrible~~~~
I'm so sorry Marianne :( That's awful....
Oh my...I can't believe this  I swear if I lived closer to you I would march down to that vet office my self and scream and yell at that staff how dare them. I cried so hard reading your story. I had a bunny for 5 years and I loved him so much. He was such a big part of my life.

I can't believe anyone would treat you like that you of all people who care so much and probably spend more money there than anyone.
I know it is so not about the money but your bunny was a little life and THEY took it away without trying.
This is very upsetting I'm so sorry this happened to you
Oh Marianne, you did your very best for the bunny, I am so sorry that this happened.

Years ago one of the kids hamsters was ill. I took it to the vets and they gave me antibiotics, I nursed it for days giving it antibiotics, stone hot water bottle near its bed to keep it warm. One morning I didnt know if it was dead or not, I wrapped it up, still trying to keep it warm. I took it to the vets the nurse took it off me came back and said it is dead probably been dead for about 12 hours. I stood in the vets tears dripping off my chin. They said they would dispose of the body at no charge. Gee whizz thanks. As I was going out I heard the receptionist say to someone in the vets it was only a hamster. I never went back there..
I am so sorry for the loss of your bunny.
And horrified at the lack of treatment and compassion that you both experienced at the vet clinic.

I would speak to the clinic owner about the poor experience. It is possible that the problem was at the front desk, not with the vet. At the very least, a vet tech or vet should have spoken to you when you brought up euthanasia vs heroic treatment.
I'm so sorry. That must feel awful. At least you were with your sweet bunny the whole time but still. Innoculations could surely wait. I would complain in person, in writing, etc.
Oh Marianne , this is so sickening. I think you should write a letter to the vet and share your experience just as you have with us. This is a teachable moment for the staff and vet in that office . They could learn how to improve their service and at least you would have comfort in knowing you tried to enlighten them.
I am so sorry. I think it is horrible how they treated both of you.
I am so sorry that Bunny and you where treated this way. I am so sorry to Hear about the passing of your sweet Bunny. He will be greatly missed.
Write the letter. Sounds like the vet needs to reevaluate what "emergency" means and retrain the office staff. Emergency should mean before cat innoculations, should mean no 8 hour wait. I seriously question this vet's committment to caring for animals, easing suffering or just collecting fees.
:( :( :( Just awfull, poor bunny and Maz so upsetting for you as well. :( :(

You need another vet clinic if that is how they were with what happened and what you and bunny went through, just not right at all and so upsetting.
Oh Marianne, I just want to give you a big hugh bear hug. I am so sorry for the loss of your bunny.
Marianne I'm so sorry for the lose of the bunny and the treatment you received at the vets
I'm sorry Marianne. Your poor bunny.

I would write a letter to whoever owns the vet practice and tell them your story. Also make sure you mention how much business you give them.

What a horrible experience. I hope you can find more of a compassionate practice to go to.
Marianne, that is terrible!! I'm so sorry for you and your bunny.
Vets all have a code of ethics to abide by and includes not letting innocent animals suffer. I would follow up with the vet and find out what went wrong on the day. It wasnt acceptable.
Marianne
I am so sorry for the loss of your bunny....
We know how much you love each and every one of them.
Your compassion for so many is beyond words...
I am so sorry for your loss and although it doesn't help
I know he felt the love you had for him, all you did to
take care of of him.
:ghug: :ghug:
Marianne this has made me mad. I think we should all have the address of this vet and we can all write scathing letters. Imagine them getting one from the UK :)

Don't go back there again. I'm devastated this happened  :ghug:
so sorry for for your loss .....
I am so disgusted by their response to your situation! I hope you find a new wonderful vet soon. :ghug:
Thanks so much everyone for your support.

I'm still at a loss as to explain what happened and how they "misunderstood" the entire call.
When I told them the following day of my unhappiness and disgust of what took place the following day while picking up Bunny's body, it was made out to be my fault. I was told I wasn't clear as to her condition. I think the person answering the phone was not listening as how clear can one be regarding an "emergency". I am so mad at myself for not making a fuss while I was waiting to be seen.
My anger is not that Bunny's death could have been prevented - perhaps it could have, but the manner of her death in which I tried to avoid at all cost. I was not given consideration of being seen if which an assessment could be made. To hold her while I say my goodbyes and to have her pass peacefully.
I have only seen this vet a few times as my vets (wonderful as they are) do not specialize in bunnies unlike this vet office.
I will write a letter of complaint although it will never change the manner of Bunny's death.

Again thanks to all of you and I will keep you posted as to what happens.

Marianne
Hi Marianne:

I would definitely write a letter to the veterinarian - actually, you have the letter almost completely written in your first post here.

Let the veterinarian know that you had an emergency and that you felt that you were not taken seriously. Give him/her an opportunity to respond. As someone previously mentioned, the veterinarian may be "sheltered" by his staff and not even know what was going on.

I am very sorry for your lose.

Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia and Abigail
Marianne, I am so sorry to hear about Bunny. There's a saying 'he who shouts loudest.....' and sadly it seems to be true, manners don't really seem to count for much these days ?

Write the letter though, this could be your silent way of 'shouting', if you get what I mean.

Big hug to you xxxxxx
So sorry for your loss. The behavior of the Vet and staff is inexcusable.
Marianne, I'm sorry for your loss.
I agree write a letter to the vet expressing your anger & concerns.......then contact all your animal loving friends & relatives and tell them the story of Bunny. Word of mouth can be a wonderful way of changing bad consumer experiences as well as a way to reward good ones.
:( Dear Maianne, so sorry to hear of your loss : I can imagine how upsetting this whole thing was. Bunny deserved attention, just like all the other patients at the vet's.

I just hope it wasn't the vet you directed me to. That office always seemed to be very compassionate and helpful.

:ghug: From all of us! Willoughby's Mom
