Pawing

Any advice on how to stop "pawing". This may be a typical thing for an OES to do, but my husband hates it and it can be painful at times. When she wants you to pet her, she will paw at you "like when you ask them to shake". We have not taught her this, she just does it. The problem is she doesn't pay attention to where she is pawing you and has gotten us in the face a few times. I tell her "no", "off", "put it down" all while putting her paw down. Nothing has worked so far.

I don't know... I kind of like it when they paw. Wendel tends to do this when he wants you to use two hands instead of just one for his loving.

My Sheepies have always done this. The dog trainer we saw said that it is a playful, friendly gesture.
they simply can't have attention when they demand it (pawing) when mine do it - yes they still try occassionally, I abruptly walk away and ignore them - that usually ends it :)
Bailee's Mom read an article about these types of "pesty" behaviors and it was suggested to use an old coffee can and put a few coins in it and then give it a good shake. It quickly gets their attention and they stop, "ON A DIME!" Bailee does not like the coin can coming out, he knows he did something wrong and is about to pay the price. It is actually very effective. Just make sure to not overuse it. It may lose it's effectiveness. Pawing may be cute, BUT, keep in mind, these guys & gals are BIG DOGS and they can hurt someone, especially a child or frail person.
As one who is currently walking around with a scrape on my thigh from being pawed by Rebecca, I can only say that the sweet gesture is worth the pain...

Sorry, I know it's not the answer that you were looking for. I've gotten it in the face a couple of times and it does hurt.

All I can say is keep the nails short - it does help!
Sammie recently started pawing, too, but she never makes hard contact. Most times she'll just rest it on your leg (whether you're sitting or standing) just long enough to get your attention, and if you go to grab it, she quickly puts it back down. She's the MOST gentle dog I've ever come across. I've started "high five-ing" with her. She raises her paw, I bat at it, she bats it at me, and so on.
I don't really have a pawing problem with Jenny, she's just a nippy little bugger.
I think it is definitely a sheepie thing. My 4 year OES, Lulu does it all of the time to get attention and most times she is very gentle. Sometimes I just hold her paw like it was a child's hand and she just looks at me with a big smile. I would love to teach her one day when we come to a stop sign and need to cross the street that I hold her paw while we cross. I have a one year OES, Ellie that doesn't paw and I think that is partly due to not teaching her how to shake paws at a young age like I did with Lulu. I have heard and believe that the pawing is worse when they have been taught to shake hands. While it can be bothersome at times, I still love it when I get that paw and their looking at me as if to say -- "Hey Mom, I am here did you forget about me?'. A nice pat on the head or belly rub usually gets her to stop. She seems to do it the most to people who are not big animal lovers -- she is relentless then.

Good Luck!
Annoying habit. Bumble did it more than he does now. He would paw at me while we sat on the couch and I'd push his foot away and say "uh-uh". He'd keep doing it and I'd do the same thing. If he continued, I'd stand up and walk away from him. He usually only does it to the other dogs now

My husband has thin skin... literally. Before I started grinding down my dogs' nails, I'd clip them, then round them up with a cardboard fingernail file. It doesn't stop the pain but it lessens the amount of blood. 8O
Both of mine do this--what works for us is to place the paw back down on the floor and say "no paw". It took awhile but it works for us.
Charlie does it all the time when he wants attention. He's especially bad if we're eating and he want some. Needless to say, he doesn't get fed when he does it but it's still cute. The funny part is when he does it with both paws all the way down our shins! Fine when we're wearing long pants but OWEEEE when we're wearing shorts or capris!
Ok, this probably sounds like a joke...but it works for me...keep the nail clippers handy, and every time your dog paws you, grab the paw and clip  either they quit, cause they hate nail clipping, or failing that, at least the nails stay really short!
Chauncey mainly paws, which is more of a tap on the shoulder when he wants to go out.
Sort of like excuse me but I've got to pee now :) He does the same thing in the middle of the night if he needs to go.

Now that is a wonderful solution and an easy way to solve a behavioral problem - spoken like a true mulit tasker :D
"No Paw" mostly works for us too. Barney was especially bad if we had just been petting him and we were done but he wanted more...so that's usually when he paws us. I would just grab his paw off my leg and drop it to the side saying No Paw. or Paw Off. But I've still had my fair share of claw-shaped bruises going down my thigh
