barking at neighbor playing basketball

It's such a nice treat to have neighbors that love our puppy. They are very, very good to her. The teenage kids run the fence and talk to her and pet her and call her name. BUT. Chiquita barks to get there attention. And it is only getting worse. We have asked them never to reward her with attention if she is barking. And that somewhat helps.

But how to stop her from barking NON-STOP while the kids are playing basketball??? They play right near our back yard entrance. And she sits and barks at them. Not so bad through winter. But now it's summer and summer break is here and these kids play ALL DAY!!!

I have tried praising and praising while she is quiet. Tried pulling her inside as soon as she gets barking at them and then letting her out as long as she is quiet (as far as chiquita is concerned we can do that all day. It;s just the more the merrier  ) Any suggestions? :D

Maybe she wants to play with them! My first OES, Duchess, used to play basketball with my boys ALL the time!
well. talk about neighbors. We have this neighbor from two blocks away that is turning out to be very strange. First time we met her she walked in our yard with our dog and said "we need to meet". She then asked if Chiquita and her dog could play in our fenced-in yard and stayed for an hour and half!!!! Then she said that she and another neighbor have doggie dates on Sunday. Ok. Great. Although I already have my doggie friends I'm always into more socialization for the puppy. And being nice to neighbors is important.

TODAY. At 7 a.m. I let chiquita out to pee. It should be said that we are TRYING very hard to curb the early morning barking. She wakes about about 5:30 to pee but today for the first time we insisted she stay in her crate until a reasonable (for us) hour. SHE DID GREAT!!!!!! She didn't even HAVE to pee at 7 when I got her up! Ok. I let her out and she's wildly barking. I go out and around the corner and there is a lady in my yard saying "oh it's just us". When I get to the gate she has her hand on it saying "let's just let them play in the backyard". I tell her no that my husband is still sleeping and we are trying to keep chiquita quiet in the mornings because the neighbor works late shift. Then she says "bring chiquita by tonight for play night". Ok. I say bye. So she says again "BRING CHIQUITA BY TONIGHT." I say thanks. Uhmmmmm???? Was she going to let herself in my backyard???? Do I have to tell her she has to be invited? And WHY would I want my her dog getting my dog barking at 7 a.m on a SUNDAY?

Is it just me or is this weird?
Weird or maybe lonely ?
I think the neighbor is probably trying to be friendly and doesn't realize how overbearing it sounds. I have a neighbor where Maggie sometimes plays in the front yard with her golden/airedale mix and I really love it when they have the chance but I try not to go by too often so I am not pressuring them. But I do wish they could play together more often. Sometimes they invite me to have a glass of wine on the porch while the dogs play. Those are the best walks of all.

Maggie barks like crazy at the sound of a bouncing basketball. She is DYING to play. She would have to live in her crate if the neighbors were out playing basketball every day. I do sometimes think that I could desensitize her to the sound by giving treats or doing something else fun at the sound of each bounce. In Maggie's agility class, they used treats to desensitize dogs to the sound of the teeter totter and it was pretty amazing how quickly it worked. But that was more to make sure dogs weren't afraid. I am not sure it is the same with the issue is excitement. But maybe it is. . .
hum every morning i walk my 2 boys around the corner to play with their buddy a 6 month old lab i just walk into their back yard maybe i should ask if it is ok seems like their dog is waiting every morning at 6;30 i feel like your neighbor now   and yes i am strange!!
My friend has a neighbour who comes over and puts her dog in the yard to play.
It made my friend realise that her security was probably inadequate as the dogs can go in the front yard all day. So she put a lock on the front gate but then gave the neighbour a key.
She did have to lay some ground rules though, as like Chiquita her golden is young and barks a lot, so they have organised that it will only be during certain hours and for certain amounts of time.
It tires them both out and then they sleep. :D
You all have weird neighbors!!! 8O

I would never dream of walking uninvited into someone's yard and having my dog play with their's. Then again, I live in the country and no one would ever do that our here..... to start with, you would have to drive to the nearest neighbor, as we live far apart.

Same here! But we wouldn't have to drive actually. We all wave & talk to each other & keep an eye out for each other etc. But other than that, none of us would think of dropping in like you mentioned! And we ALL have dogs & some of us multiples!
Yea me too....I love to have company, but not before noon, and then with an open INVITATION......

I agree with you - if I found someone in my yard without my permission I would freak!! We did have an experience with someone trying to run Dan and B down on the street so the dogs could meet - her dog was totally out of control and Dan said - sorry we are training and working on something, if you can bring your dog over under control, fine - I believe she called him unfriendly

Some people are jsut plain weird and have no boundaries.
I would think of that the same I would if a neighbor entered my home w/o knocking first. It's rude.

I also could not live with the idea of someone opening my door and potentially letting my dogs out b/c of their stupidity (like not closing the door all the way, and then giving up chasing after them b/c they're tired of running). Reason why I could never have a dog walker either.

Anyway, you could always take your dog out there (but not to play) daily to get her used to the kids playing. After awhile, she may get used to it and ignore it. Yuki barked like crazy to basketball players b/c she has to herd and wanted the ball and them to stop running. Now it's not so bad. She's content on her walks. Or you could just have a barker and it won't get any better. ;) I'd let her in the house. I can't stand hearing dogs bark all the time in a neighborhood, and like you're trying to do now... couldn't let my dog be "that" dog.
So, I have several 'chatty' dogs and have had a professional trainer over to work with this issue. We have gone through bark collars (9+) of every variety including citronella, ultrasonic and shock. If you are going to use a collar, make sure you get a good brand like dogtra or a bark limiter. Do not overuse the collar - extended wear can rub your dog's neck a little raw.
If you are adverse to a bark collar, bring your pup to the fence while on a lead. Wait for your dog to bark - then yank the leash in a direction away from the basketball area while calmly saying no. Do this as often as possible.
Make sure the neighbor kids don't give attention while she is barking as that will reinforce the bad behavior. If you can get them involved, buy treats and have them reinforce sit/stay in order to get a treat. That way your dog learns that she will only get attention when behaving correctly.
Our situation was slightly different (my dogs detest the dog next door after he bit my female GSD and don't care too much for the owners either).
What you ultimately want is a dog that will make the decision to stay quiet on their own. Your case seems like it would be a lot easier to fix! Good luck!!! :-)
