Any help would be greatly appreciated... I know these probably aren't major issues and the collar she will get used to.. I just don't know the best way to go about training her because its hard to keep her attention a little bit. |

OK, you're probably not going to appreciate this but:
You're right - so classic puppy! Leave the collar on now. She'll adjust. As for the leash, I start out by carrying critter out into yard, snapping lead on, putting puppy down and you follow her. I try to not let there be a tight lead in the beginning. If she refuses to move, don't make a big deal out of it, don't tug at her. Wait her out. This is when the teeny, tiny attention span is to your advantage: she'll see a butterfly or something and all bets are off. Or bring some tossable toys and toss them close to you so she only has to move a few feet, then toss another as you pick the first one up (presuming she drops it) and make a game of it. Run a few steps the other way so she hopefully tries to chase you. You make it fun in the beginning and she won't be so likely to resent it. Either way, she'll get over it in a few days. I've yet to meet a three year old OES who was still sulking about the whole leash/collar thing Kristine |
I guess I was really lucky with Jenny with the collar thing (the crate was my problem for the first three weeks), she took to it from day 1, probably because she thought she'd miss out on going somewhere. I agree with Kristine to keep with it though. |
Have you tried to motivate him with treats - put a treat down at his nose level and see if he will follow it (something soft -so he can nibble on it) as you walk around with him on the leash.
My 7 month old OES still just looks at us when called and doesn't come -he just sits there or runs the other way!! So I have no ideas there!! |
I'm sure you'll get plenty of good advice from everyone else, but I just wanted to say congratulations on the new puppy! |
Just an update... Chloe is still itching at her collar a little bit, but not nearly as much .. and as far as the leash goes.. well... we've gotten her to go two houses down so far |

With some you have to keep the leads out of sight! Everytime mine see them they look at them longingly! |

Everytime mine see them they look at them longingly! Maggie our Coonhound loves hers. She is so crazy. When she hunts, she wears a separate collar with a light and bell on it. She goes over to the hook with her stuff on it and nudges them to get her bell to ring. And then proceeds to get all wiggly and excited. |
One thing you may want to try, put the collar and leash on while in the house and leave her alone. She will become less sensitive to it, probably a lot faster than you might think. Give treats and praise whenever you can and things will work out fine. |

But watch, so she doesn't eat the leash that enticingly trails after her.... |

They even learn what your "going out clothes" are (being dog walking clothes! ) Good Luck and congrats on the baby! |

(being dog walking clothes! ) And God forbid I should have on "dog show clothes" & am not taking any of them! |
Congrats on your new puppy! They also learn the car key sound--and wait by the door when they hear it. If you need to go somewhere without them you can't remove the car keys from your purse until you are outside the door! |
Archie can go from pretending to be asleep ie you can slide him accross the kitchen floor out of the way of the door and he won't stir to instant alertness sat upright! at me saying "Archie do you want a walk" then he'll follow me to the loo, go to my shoes, then to his lead where I collect his poo bags and biscuits before we proceed outside.
This was all from a dog who used to stop every other yard on his walks Like most things with these crazy hounds - lot's of little steps and lot's of patience from you will be rewarded ten times over. They take on tiny little bits each day, these little improvements can be imperceivable day on day, but over a period of time you'll notice huge advances in their behaviour. |
