I don't know if it is more common in oes than other breeds. I know that huskies and boxers get fat cysts more than other breeds. My first oes never had any, however my friends almost 8 yr old oes does have a rather large one. It never seems to cause any problems, and her vet has never recommended removing it. If it was my dog, with a large one, I think I would have it removed, but they don't really cause any harm if they are benign. |
Our 12 year old OES has a few fatty cysts. They are monitored approximately every 6 months by our vets. They do a hands on exam of every cyst and chart their location, size and texture (hard, watery...).
I believe there was another post about this somewhere in the past where a few other people replied about their dogs having had some cysts in the past. You should be able to search and find what they had to say. |
What a cute avatar Maxmm! |
Thanks! I came to the realization that Norman hasn't gotten his moment yet and that pic has been rattling around my computer. I will let him know you like it. |
Sorry I can offer no advice on the cysts.
But Norman is adorable!!! Great job on the avatar! Stormi and co. |
It is my understanding that Sebasceous Cysts are common in OES. Although they are benign - they are a nuisance and often requires multiple surgeries to remove them (and they can become infected/abscessed). I'm not sure if there's a genetic link or not - or if it's just an afflication common to the breed.

Drez has 2 sebaceous cysts that the vet does not recommend for removal. They keep an eye on them whenever she goes in for a physical, and as long as they don't change drastically, they won't do anything. I hate feeling them, though, cause I never know if when I'm brushing or grooming her if it hurts to bump them.

I have 4 OES. Luke and Beau are littermates and both had cysts. Luke's would dry up and fall off(they were very hard). Beau had quite a few and they had to be removed. Several were deep and required sutures but it didn't seem to bother him. Rosco and Daisy have never had any, although all 4 are from the same breeder. Unless your vet advises removal they are not a problem. |
Many large breeds are prone to fatty cysts. My mom's 215 pound Bouvier des Flanders came from a reputable breeder and was a strong, healthy dog his whole life but he had a lot of cysts from about age 6 on. They were never a problem but some of them did get huge and really unsightly. The vet said if they weren't hurting him, which they didn't appear to, they could be left alone since none were deep. I guess it all depends on the dog. |
