How long till coat grows back

So I just got my OES from a shelter. He is 3 years old and had some pretty bad matting. I took him to the groomer and recommended a full shave. Wow was I surprised, to say the least, as to what was under that coat. I still cannot get over that the basketball shaped fur ball had such a long nose under it.

Anyway, how long does it take for the full coat to grow back. How often do you all have your dogs shaved during the hot summer. Is once enough, then just regulair grooming? I don't want him to be uncomfortble, as I like to jog and he seems to enjoy it as well.

Thanks

Depending on his "genes", most likely it will take around a year for a full coat to grow back. I have one boy who grew coat amazingly fast. Went from a shave down to full show coat in 6 months. But he was our hair machine! That is not the norm.

You can shave them as often or as little as you want. I generally go about 4 months in between shavings if I am keeping a dog shaved down. I find at that point that they start to need some regualr grooming to keep the mats away.
Yep, Marilyn is right. It varies with the dog. Jack is faster, within 3 months brushing is madatory, full shag by 8 months. MO is a little slower, full shag by 9-10 months.

With a newbie, he probably isn't used to being groomed. Start now with body rubs, toe tickles, anything to make him at ease with you touching him in all the places. Then move onto a tool, but just use the opposite side so he learns an implement in your hand can be as relaxing. When the hair does come back, use a tool with little nobs on the end to keep from scratching his hide. That tool will be useless as the hair gets longer, you'll need a straight pin type brush and by then you've watched the grooming info here so many times you know how to brush without hurting the dog.
