I need some advice please: I have a 6 month old OESheepdog and she seems to be jealous when other dogs are around people I socialise with. For example my friend has 2 Old English mine loves to play with them but when they come close to me or even their owner mine herds them away snarling and growling. She seems to be fine with all dogs and all people but not when they are together? I hope someone can advise on how to turn this behaviour around. Regards Sue x p.s. she isn't so bad if we are out on a walk and it seems exacerbated when we are in a house or someones garden. |

At six months old, this behavior should definitely be corrected. I have not encountered this problem with my sheepdog. The moment she was fully vaccinated, I made it a point to take her to puppy classes and on long walks where there were lots of people, children, other dogs, etc.
You dog may feel the need that he/she needs to protect you. You may have to assert a more alpha role and show your dog that you can take care of yourself and you can decide who comes near you. I would definitely recommend puppy training classes. They are wonderful, because you can get enrolled in a class with other people and dogs to help with the socialization aspect. If you have completed puppy training classes, I would recommend doing additional training. |
Actually it sounds like resource guarding - I would assume if she doesn't already react around food as well, she soon will.
There are some others around here who can give some great advice, you do have to deal with it sooner rather and later. Search on the issue resource guarding and you will find some good advice already posted - sorry I think my brain is still in a different time zone, or at least the car or I would have some better advice. |
