Also, when my husband comes home from work she barks and barks at him. He just stands there and tries not to get her any more excited but she doesn't give it a rest, just keeps on barking. Almost like she is fussing at him for being gone all day! Would love to hear of other owner's sheepie quirks! |

My girl does this also. It almost always my shoes though. I keep a pair by the back door. And most of my flipflops have toothmarks but not chewed up. As far as the barking, she does it some with us, but mostly when someone who is not there on a daily basis comes in, like our daughter and her family and our sons friends. She also spins like a top the whole time. |
Yep, barking is common when DH comes home and MO gives her daddy a full account of her day. Then Jack has to chime in, later Harry. Blessed Glacier doesn't feel the need to act so silly.
Once in awhile MO gets so wound up she starts the mad dash thru the house, around the diningroom table, banking off the living room couch, back to the bedroom, banking off the headboard and back out to the diningroom and living room. Number of laps varies with her excitement. Somebody is using the shoe for attention.........silly sheepie. |
bailey has always grabbed stuff she's not supposed to have to get attention, and now she's got grover helping her. their latest is my kids crayons...but they have me trained well - i'll take the crayon and give them their rawhide cheweys. smart sheepies. |
OMG~ Baloo is a "collector" when he thinks no one is paying enough attention to him too!!
Like he will decide 'HEY!! you're not looking at me! Fine! Watch THIS---' and will grab something and then sit there holding it in his mouth just waiting for someone to call him crazy, pat him on the head and take it away. If we just look at him and no one says anything he'll put the first object down, go find something else, come back to the same spot... wait again, holding it gently in his mouth.... he will do this over and over till we finally say something. He'll look at me like "geesh Mom! Took you long enough!" then he will trott off happy as a lark. Never chews the items. Just COLLECTS them. shoes, pens, lacrosse ball, socks, wash cloth, and once he got in the shower and brought out the poof thing you put body wash on. |

Tiggy barks madly when we get home. Its soooo great to see pack members back safe and sound.
She knows that I'd prefer her to keep it to a minimum though so if there's a shoe around she grabs it and runs with it. I suspect its her way of stopping herself barking. She hasnt mastered the art of barking round a shoe yet. Kind of I'm so happy to see you I either have to bark or put something I'm not supposed to have in my mouth and run. |
Thank you for these stories!!! I've so often felt like a failure as a pack leader as my Gracie has trained me well for getting a rawhide.
It starts with her barking a bit at the pantry door (where the goodies are) pacing back and forth to me. If the desired behavior is not seen (i.e. I don't rush to the pantry for the raw hide) she swiftly makes her way to my daughter's stuffed animals, brings one down and resumes the pacing until I call her and she comes to hand the stuffed animal to me. After the routine is repeated a few times I give in and hand her a raw hide... I swear somewhere in the back of my mind I hear a clicker telling me "Well done!" ... Salla, the proud mom of my rescue Gracie of 11 years. |
If you give in with the raw hide, make her work for that with a "SIT" command before you give in She has to sit after all her carry on with the stuffies etc before she is allowed the treat. |
Oh, she does. First sit and drop to give the stuffed animal up and then sit and/or down for the treat. I've noticed lately that this goes on more so when my daughter (8 yrs) is around as she loves the routine just about as much as Gracie -- as long as it's not her special stuffed animals, of course.
Salla. |
Hey it could be worse. Molly still gets so excited when we come home she leaks regardless of how much we ignore her. |
Chauncey's favorite is a dish cloth and he is slick. I been standing beside the sink and had him snatch it. He takes all of his bounty to his bed, so if we see him headed there it's time to check on him. |
Rugs. Throw rugs. Ever since Winnie came home at 8 weeks of age, she's had a "thing" for throw rugs. She cannot leave one alone for long. She'll eye it. Then go back and look at it again and then POUNCE - she's chewing on it and dragging it to wherever she wants it to be.
I can't wait until she's older and hopefully outgrows this obsession. I want my kitchen and bathroom rugs back! |
If Winnie is like my dear long gone Basil, that wouldn't be "throw rug" but rather "throw up rug." He never met a rug he couldn't try to eat but would "give back" shortly after the attempt. Fortunately he live a long healthy life........rugs did lose their interest in later years. So there's hope for Winnie. |
Sunny takes only flip flops, but not just the foam kind, anything with a strap between the toes, but won't touch other sandals or shoes. Maybe she's a fashionista and knows the diff. And same thing, she never chews them, only rearranges them around the house. When we were teaching her "drop it", this was the first thing she was successful with, and I praised her sooooo much that I think she's looking for that same reaction every time she does it.
Talking about quirkiness, Sunny likes to smear her face along the hallway after taking a drink of water, and her lips skid across the wall and actually make the same noise that sneakers on a basketball court make. It's so funny. Except when I have to wash the walls and there's dog smear on there. Yuck. But it's cute. When we put the play pen up, she didn't like that it interfered with the tail end of "her space", so she started to smear her face along it as well- then she continued on to the end table and a chair that run along the same path. The other day she turned the corner and started on the couch- that's when I put my foot down and told her no. But I gotta say, it was cute. It was one of those "No"'s that's in a laughing tone and she knows that I don't really mean it. She too smart for her own good, but aren't they all? |
And then there's Baxter..... When we get home and after all of the welcome home hugs and uber excitement he starts to table surf and bag inspection (when I leave it open) .... Looking for those high value items that he can grab, show and then initiate the inevitable chase ! After losing a couple of pairs of fabulous glasses, countless amounts of mail, car key chewing where he inadvertantly switches the house alarm on.... You'd think we would have learned...... And we love him so !!! |
During a training session (usually one that has been frustrating for both of us being so stubborn) and I have to turn and grab some more treats, Kipper will dash off and grab the nearest toy (whether it be his or my brother's) and walk around me in circles, moving his head just out of my reach and when I finally give in and try to grab it, AHA! down the hall he dashes! Usually thats my queue to tell him to sit and give me the toy and he's done training for the day |
