I have a Mars Coat King, but how do I thin the chest? Do I lift up the top hair and strip underneath like on the neck? Before I just stripped like mad on the front and now it looks funny, all sticky outy and messy. I think I did it wrong? |
|
oh I'd like to know too!! Tonks and Luna have ridiculously full looking neck and chest areas that matt up badly under their collars. |
me too!! all 3 hve thick necks. |
Take out the undercoat with a rake. |
would a slicker brush work too? |

No. A slicker will not thin out the hair. It saves hair. Using the Mars stripper, lift up the hair & strip away until you feel the stripper moving thru pretty easily. Then let another layer drop & do the same until you have moved up the chest. Remember to do the same on the sides of the chest, under the chin (throat area) & the side of the head a bit behind the jaw. |
Ch.Sheepdog has given good instructions but just adding one more with the Mars, make sure no matts or knots or it will take a chunk out as you use it.
The mars does cut coat as it is bladed, I prefer a rake with the same way of using it, knotless, well groomed before trying to strip out the bulk from around the shawl and neck. |
I have better success with my narrow toothed comb. Between Bailey and Riley, I get a plastic grocery bag full of hair every week.
i tend to use the rake for quick touch ups. |
Thank you, I know this is a dumb question, but where does the undercoat end and top coat start on the chest? It all looks the same to me. Should I leave a couple inches under his neck to grow longer to cover the rest? |
Hi Cassie, you have a good supplier not to far away from you http://www.diamondedgeltd.com/acatalog/ ... bs_26.html if you click on this link and scroll down to the Aaronco V-rake this an excellant tool for taking out undercoat without breking the topcoat and the benefit is you do not have to lift the topcoat first. |

Not a dumb question. Actually, the undercoat is amongst the outer coat, all the way up the chest area. What you are working towards is the chest looking like it is "flat" or completely "straight" (up & down) from the chin down. Stripping out under the chin will "define" the chin/neck area more. More often than not, people who do not do alot of show grooming tend to leave more hair in than take too much hair out. So just work slowly until you get the look you want. |
I have been looking at the mars brush.
There are 3 kinds fine, med, and course. Which one is good for the OES ???? |
what on earth is a mars stripper? i think I need Summer to be done with one, she has clumps in her undrcoat |
Thanks Stewart, will get one of those.
A Mars coat king is a thing with blades used to thin the coat. I got mine off ebay, it's an 8 blade one, I got it 2 years ago but I think this is the same person I got mine from. |
I use the Oster 18 Teeth Wide Head and I find this doesn't break the coat at all.Groomers sell this for around £24.00, I've added the link for you.
