Im from Montreal, Quebec (Canada). My OES is now 4 years old, and his name is Saku (for the hockey player). Sorry for my written english... Because the summer is coming soon, Im thinking of getting Saku shaved. My groomer told me that it's not a good idea that after is hair are going to be thicker and he will feel more the heat. Is it true ??? Does the hair will be the same after the shaving ??? Can you show me some shaved OES pictures to help me choose a grooming that I like ?? Thank you everybody !! |

In my experience, shaving them won't change their coat.
If you go to the link at the top right that says "My Photos" then under the logo click "Album list" you'll be on the photo gallery page, and you can scan thousands of pictures - the 1st Portraits album in particular will have many shots of OES that have been shaved/clipped short. Here is one of mine in his summer cut: |
Shaving won't change the coat. Any changes that you see were changes that would've taken place anyway-- OES go through several coat changes in their lifetimes-- and the shaving just makes the change more obvious when it comes in. Shave away! |
Laika is going in tomorrow. All I know is I need a break!

I would say that it does change the coat, its ok if you don't ever want it to come back the same. When I see clipped off oes when its grown back it's not as nice, and yes it will get thicker and clumpy each time you clip it.
All the oes I have coming in for clipping are very thick, one of my customers is now scissored and its taken over 2 years to get a good coat back. I always ask customers if there really sure before I clip them. In the summer the coat acts as an insulation to keep the dog cooler............. |

I do not believe shaving effects the coat - the coat goes through many changes and should get thicker "Profuse coat" is part of the standard. What can effect he coat is neutering as it will make the coat softer. As far as the insulation theory - I have read the argumenst, seen no scientific studies, and just know that my boy hates the heat and when we shave him down he runs and plays in the warmer weather - in a longer coat he is miserable and lays on the tile floor (or the A/c vents ). It doesn't seem to effect my girl at all either way - each dog is different and you have to deal with the one you have . |
A few OESs in different stages of nakedness
at this address- http://oesusa.com I think the coat changes as a dog ages. |
Sorry, not really related to your question but LOVE the name for your dog! I am originally from Finland and makes me proud to hear that an OES was named after a Finnish hockey star! YEA!!!

I wonder if each dog is different or because you think the coat may have changed and can't remember what it was like beforehand, as the texture feels different when it grows back ? Ollie has been shaved down 4 times and I haven't noticed any difference in his coat.
Don't shave too short though, as the coat does help against sunburn. |
Yes, each dog is different. Depends on what is in their background as to what their coats will end up like....soft, harsh, no undercoat or profuse. Most people will notice a difference in the coat texture if they shave off the puppy coat. But once the puppy coat is truly gone & the dog has gone thru it's "coat changes" then what you see is what you get. I had a pup that I continutally shaved down until he was about 2 years old. He was a late bloomer & not ready for the show ring until at least then. Nice thick, fluffy coat as a pup but each time I shaved him (remember this was continuted thru his coat changes) his coat seemed harsher. I don't think it gave him any better coat, it just gave me a break of dealing with an extremely thick undercoat & harsher outercoat while he was growing into himself. If you could see his parents you'd see he got his mother's quality of coat & farther's quantity of coat (which was one of the things I was breeding for). My 2 older dogs that get shaved on a regular basis since they are done showing have no difference in their adult coats other than it tends to thin out as they get really old. My 9 year old girl I put back into coat last year for the national & her coat was the same as I remember it before ever shaving her down at the age of 4. |
Thank you everybody !!
I think we are going to try it this year and will see for the futur. I want my groomer to use the longer blade to let the coat at a good lenght. ChSheepdogs : Your dogs are amazing !!! WOW !!! Do you shaved them sometime (not your show dogs but the other,...) ??? I like so much Saku with a long coat but I need a break of grooming (with my 11 month baby girl...). Saku will go swim this summer too à, so it will be easier... I have some difficulties to find pictures... If you have pictures of your dog shaved, I will appreciate. Thanks |

Thanks Just remember to have your dog as mat free as possible & the groomer should be able to use a blade that leaves a bit more length. Thank you for the very nice compliment. Remember alot of those pictures are show pictures & my dogs don't look like that all the time. But if I didn't keep up with them I couldn't have them look decent for the show ring either. I have a mentor (she started out mentoring me 11 years ago & it's an ongoing process ) who has really made me "toe the line". She said if she was going to spend the time teaching me I was going to learn from the ground up. At times I wondered if it was all worth it but as time went on I could see why it had to be done that way. Yes, I do shave down my show dogs. José is the one that I shaved down continually until he was 2 years old. He took a long time to grow into himself. My other dogs are generally shaved down after they are finished in the conformation ring. I work full-time away from home so keeping multiple dogs in coat can be very time consuming for me. In 2008 I was showing José in conformation, putting Mariah back into coat as a veteran for the national that year & keeping Olivia in coat to start showing her in the fall of 2008. So I was ever so happy to shave Mariah down right after the national in 2008. José is scissored down right now while we are training in obedience. And my clippers are warming up for the day in the very near future when Olivia's AKC CH Certificate shows up! Since she fininshed last Sat., her days in full Show coat are numbered! |
i shave roofus twice a year and his coat comes back as thick and fluffy as it was before.
Neutering definitely did make his coat extremely soft. Roofus is much too active (swimming, dog park, frisbee, herding, etc) to be full coated in the summer. I always known when it's time to shave him because he pants indoors. When he's shaved, he no longer pants in the house. And I definitely agree with the mats statement - I was finally able to shave him with a comb because I'd done so wonderfully keeping him completely mat-free. It's really nice to leave SOME hair on your pooch |
