Going into this weekend he needed only 5 more points (Had 120 of 125) to be a champion. Points are gained by placing in the top 3 in their weight class. 1st place = 35 points, 2nd = 30, and 3rd = 25.They also have to have a 1st place - which he already had. So our goal was to place and he would be a champion! Saturday was kind of a dud. He had a good mental attitude, but only pulled 1200#. Knowing he was out of shape (for him) I really wasn't too disappointed - and I was thrilled with the way he pulled the rounds. This sport is very much mental and he had his act together He ended up in about 6th place...... I wasn't going to come Sunday but then Todd went fishing (opener weekend here) and LeAnne went to Keith's parents for mother's day in the morning. We decided to do our mother's day for supper- so off to the weight pull we went on Sunday. I also brought Todd's Maggie (coonhound) to enter in the novice pull. Amazingly, Maggie actually pulled. She never even had a harness on before as Chewie's is way too big. Here are some pictures of Maggie. Novice is for training so her leash was on. and I love this one - getting some love after her pull - For Maggie to actually even do this is so amazing. Two years ago she was this wild frightened thin dog who never had been handled or been in a house. She went on a trip (45 minutes), was brought in a strange building and strange dogs and people, had a harness put on her, pulled a 300 pound cart that makes noise and "chases" her - and she was perfect. We have worked a LOT with her and it was so nice to see it pay off and her having a good time. And Maggie got 3rd place in the Novice class. The dogs that pulled the final weight faster than her were a great dane and a St bernard (both young dogs in training), so we were VERY proud of little 44 pound Maggie!!! And on to Chewie.... He was ready to go Sunday morning - "are we there yet?" And a classic pull picture - And he kept pulling and pulling. Soon we were down to just 2 dogs left in their class - Chewie and Gunnar. Gunnar is a Samoyed. So it was the battle of the hairy boys! Both pulled the easy weights - 1200, 1275, 1350. As the other dogs dropped out it was just these 2, pulling back to back, Gunnar 1st, then Chewie. On to 1425, then 1500. I was already on cloud nine becase Chewie had at least 2nd place...so he had his CH!! 1550 was Chewie's personal best but with a easier cart (tire inflation PSI varies from sanctioning groups - this one has lower PSI tires so is harder to pull) At 1575 Gunnar couldn't budge the cart, so he was out.......... Chewie needed to pull it to beat him as Gunnar pulled the 1500 pound round faster than Chewie.....yikes, nothing like pressure! I was getting Chewie pumped up between rounds and we breezed into the chute. Chewie tried and tried and got frustrated and started to bark. The timer called "30 seconds" = meaning we only had 30 seconds to complete the pull. Then he leaned into the harness and grunted and moved the cart!!! Slowly it started to roll and everyone is cheering and screaming - hoping we would complete the pull in time - and he did - with about 10 seconds to spare.... So he finished his Championship in high style with a 1st place win!!! yay Chewie!!! Here is a pooped Chewie with his 1st place ribbon after we got home and for those with good eyes (or you can look at it bigger in my album) here is the scoreboard showing his win. Chewie is in the middle of the board. There is a tack stuck in on the left side, his name is right below it. Gunnar is right above him - |

Thanks everyone!!!
We are so happy with Chewie - even if he didn't do all this fun stuff. He is such a sweetheart. I was so sure we were out when he started barking, I would have still been thrilled with the 1500 pull. I have no idea why he decided to lean into it and give the extra effort and get the 1575. I was so shocked, but cheered him on big time....I know I said something crazy like "OMG, go faster!" as we were running out of time because everyone laughed at me...like Chewie could pull that weight any faster???? duh, stupid human! |
Congratulations Chewie , and congrats to you Dawn, he is such a beautiful boy and you keep him so lovely |
