NOT sitting pretty- Behavioral or Medical?

Our OES is now a year and 4 months old, and still sits like a puppy- all sloppy and on the side of her butt- instead of on her haunches. Now, is this a large breed thing, an OES thing, a lazy thing, a rebellious thing, or a bad hip thing? What I'm worried about is that's it's hip dysplasia!! Her mom and dad were both quite old when we met them, and their hips seemed fine (mom was 10 and dad was 11, and they were still active and playful as pups, pretty remarkable for their age. We met her older sister by 2 years, and she looked fine too).

She can sit on her haunches, but usually chooses not to.

Just wondering if it merits a trip to the vet, or if it's totally normal OES behavior.

Any thoughts on this would be very appreciated! Thanks!

You really can't determine whether you're dog has hip dysplasia by observing other relatives. Hip dysplasia can pop up in even the best of lines.

I have an OES with hip dysplasia and she almost always sits perfectly square on her haunches. http://oesusa.com/Page2015.jpg So I don't think the position a dog sits in is a sure fire way to tell if a dog has CHD either.

Is her gait off? Does she limp or is she slow to stand at times? If in doubt or if you want to know for sure whether your dog has chronic hip dysplasia, consider having her hips x-rayed.
Jaci's right. When in doubt, x-ray.

When I was training my OFA excellent bitch in obedience she had the sloppiest sit known to canines if I didn't ask for a nice sit. I just got through getting OFA x-rays done on three of her get, now three years old, and all three will sit sloppy if I don't keep after them, and their hips all look great radiographically.

Every OES I've ever trained (I do obedience and agility and such) had to be trained to sit straight for a sustained period of time. A friend took one of her obedience OES bitches (OFA good) to a Suzanne Clothier seminar. Suzanne proposed the theory that OES are prone to lazy (weak) ab muscles and that's why they have a tendency to sit sloppy. She suggested some ab strengthening exercises for my friend's dog.

The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. So I now try to incorporate core building exercises into my dogs' routine. And when working on the obedience sit stays, demanding a perfectly square sit, but working up to it over time while slowly building up the muscles they need to hold themselves easily in place.

Either way, we can't tell you that her hips are good or bad. But like Jaci indicates, I'd be looking for other signs before I'd get panicked over sitting sloppy. But if the sloppy sits bother you, as long as her hips and knees are indeed OK, you can train/condition her to sit straight.

When my boy dog starts to get tired he sits like a drunk slouched on a bar stool  I always half expect him to hiccup a few times and fall into a happy heap.

It must be a boy thing and it isn't just OES. Both Morgan and Beowulf do this (actually I have been known to jump away from them once they really start to lean in and they do fall over  )

I would talk to the vet he can tell you if there is some muscular issue and when you are ready Xray.

Not limited to boys. Mariah does the same thing. Jim says "She's sitting like a floozy again!" Don't know why she does it now & then. She can sit really straight when she wants to! And we are looking at OFA Excellent hips & muscle tone that my vet said he just couldn't believe in a 9 year old girl.

Everybody always laughed at Quin because, he leaned soooo hard into me!
We worked pretty hard to get that out of him but, I sure do miss that
silly sloppy sit he did!
(yes, he would fall over if I were to move away!)
I do believe every bit of his was laziness even though we never
had his hips xrayed!
hahaha, thanks for the laughs everyone! I'm glad to hear that it's probably just a quirky thing and bot medical. I like the reference to sitting like a floozy, I think I'm going to use that one. Although I've known for a while that Sunny's no lady. She's just a simple farm gal :)

you mean like this?...

Baley sometimes sits like this but it is RARE! I have never seen Baxter sit this straight!

Both have very healthy hips and great muscle tone!
Actually, Mariah sticks that leg straight out! Sort of like a "floozy" sticking her leg out thru the slit in her skirt! I'll have to see if I have a picture somewhere...................
It would be fun to see a picture of her  I know what you mean-- Baxter is very prone to that too especially when he is sitting on furniture which he loves to do--I just haven't gotten a good pic of that one. Baley sticks his leg out when he is sitting and leaning on us. Neither one of these guys have ever had a really pretty straight sit--we just attribute it to a male thing but I guess a 'floozie' sit would be pretty cute too!
Sweetpea sits with one leg pointing out - I call it her 'ballerina' sit as she really looks like she's pointing her toes! She can sit 'properly' too! I'll try to get a picture.....
I will try hard to get a pic of Tiggy the harlot.
She sits on the couch leaning back and when our Dalmo decides to have a good 'ol snoff of the nether regions she holds one back leg up in the air while still sitting 8O
Looks like she's holding her paw up to stop traffic except its her back paw.
The Dalmo's happy.
Some of the post are so funny. One of my dogs does have hip dysplasia and after talking to the vet about my dog I found out that sloppy sitting is actually a sign that the hips are very healthy!! As my dog does, she sits very "proper" but it is because her hips hurt so she keeps them tucked in. A dog with good hips can sit comfortably in many positions. So, you may not like how she sits but it is a very good sign of good health.
My dog sits really funny too and IDK if he just needs time to learn proper posture or if its something I should be concerned about. He sits with one leg extended out as such:

Must be a boy thing.....I know that sit quite well
:sidestep:
I don't know if its a boy thing- my Luna is a VERY sloppy sitter. So much so that when I give her a "sit" command she almost always slumps into lying down instead.
