reasons for diarrhea?

Chiquita has had diarrhea off and on for seven days.

I've been feeding her homemade rice and boiled chicken. When her stools firm up I've been trying to reintroduce her dog food. We've been giving her imodium to help with the really bad spells. WHAT COULD THIS BE? She's not getting any treats or extras. Yesterday went great. She was really back to herself. She eat all three meals (astounding for chiquita). They were a cup of dog food mixed with rice and chicken. No problem until midnight. Then diarrhea every half hour or hour until 7 this morning. OMG 8O My husband and I look like the walking death. Why all this diarrhea at NIGHT!

What reasons for diarrhea are there? She doesn't act sick. She runs and plays after a good nap in the morning  She eats. She drinks. Why does this dog have diarrhea?

Any ideas would be soooooo appreciated. She goes to the vet at 4:30 today. But it seems to me....I mean, what can they do?

Wow, that list is long!

Food: raw eggs, rich people food such as gravies or milk, food allergies (maybe it's her own food that is now causing problem?) How does her food smell....it can become rancid if stored improperly. Excess fats such as a bit to help get a glosy coat.

Change in food. Eating garbage or other misc items that are irritating the gut, change of water, excitement or vigorous exercise. Antibiotics that kill good intentinal bacteria. Parasites and worms (especially prolonged diarrhea).

Viruses and bacteria.....thinking parvovirus, et al, distemper. Chemical poisonings (very rare). Colitis which is an inflammation of the large intestine and common cause of prolonged diarrhea.

NO food for 24 hours. Then 5 or 6 small meals of a carbohydrate and fat free protein. Rice sounds OK, but is you suspect it might be the problem, cook up some barley. It's often very safe. No fat with the chicken, no skin. (if it is Colitis, this feeding won't help.......often they need food with more fiber)

Usually after 48 hours you consult a vet and bring sample of the runs to check for parasites.
We're also dealing with some loose stool and diarrhea w/our puppy.

It can easily be too much food as well as the brand not sitting well w/your dog. We're pretty sure it's the brand he's on (pro plan sensitive stomach), so we're switching him to our other dog's brand (wellness)
If your dog has diarrhea for more than two days I would alwasy consult the vet!!

Dehydration can set in very easily with younger dogs and/or due to heat. Also sometimes it pays to ID a problem early to prevent later issues.

My vet is #5 on my speed dial (after VM and Dan and the kids :D )

Having a dog prone to issues I hav ea routine withthe vet (we kep meds on hand) but sometimes I just KNOW we have to go on day one. I really think it pays to be proactive.
Try oatmeal instead of rice. I started the puppy (Langley) out on rice and my vet said try oatmeal. I decide to give the rest of the rice to Laika. He stopped having diarrhea and she started. Soon as I took away the rice it cleared.
Just wanted to say that I feel you pain and I truly hope that your little girl feels better and you have some interrupted sleep soon! :plead:
I have noticed that when my Duncan is stressed, he has a tendency for loose bowels and/or diarrhea. However, it has never lasted as long as your baby's. What has the vet said?
Sounds like it most likely is a bacterial upset in the intestinal tract. They can get it from just about anything outside.....grass, gravel, dirt. Keep your dog on a bland diet & get it into the vet. Most likely will need an antibiotic to knock out the bad bacteria to let the good bacteria get back to work.

A drastic change in food can cause a problem too but it shouldn't last that long. As for the ProPlan Sensitive Skin & Stomach...........I have always found dogs will do better on it rather than worse.

 You guessed it! We went to the vet last night. She has an overabundance of bacteria in her gutt. She's taking an antibiotic and another packet of good flora. I'm supposed to wean her off the chicken and rice as she told me it doesn't have any minerals and vitamins. And I should not be giving smoked turkey necks to a puppy. :( She'll be sad that they don't reemerge into the treat selection. :(

She also said that per her weight she could have two pills of imodiom (2 mg each) every eight hours. And to keep her on it for a bit. soooooooo. WE SLEPT LAST NIGHT!!!!!! Chiquita looks so much better already. Her eyes are white and she seems perky.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!! :D :D :D :D :D

Can you tell I've been thru this more than once? Sometimes all dogs at one time! One thing my vet always suggests is to use the Imodium Advanced. He likes it because it has an anti-gas agent in it. He says when they have diarehha, they almost always have gas with it & the Imodium Advanced helps to eliminate the cramping involved with that.
last nite dreamer wwas throwing up looked like he ate a pine cone outside and now has the runs thats for posting was about to
