best toys

What are some good toys to keep Duncan busy/happy. He came to me with one toy, a stuffed squeaking tug toy, which has seen it's better days by now. I got him a rope toy, which he likes to play keepaway/tug with. He doesn't like the squeaking rubber ball with the nubs on it. When we toss it he will chase, but not pick it up. Maybe it's the texture of it? (The nubs). Got a 'kong' to put treats inside, my daughters Doberman loves those things and will play with them endlessly, but Duncan didn't know what to do with it. We got him to understand that there are treats inside and you have to play with it to get them out, now he will roll it around the floor until the treats fall out. Any ideas for other things to keep him happy. He spends the day alone while I am at work and the kids are at school, from about 7 am till 230 pm M-F. He doesn't bother anything in the house, he has the run of the house. Has never chewed anything up, etc., I just wonder what in the world he does all day? lol

He probably mostly sleeps. The few times I have stayed home during the day, Pooh really wanted nothing to do with me and slept in all different places. You may want top try E-bay. I bought an assortment of toys really cheap to see what Pooh would play with. As it turns out, anything with a squeeker in it he loves.
I wonder the same thing! My OES is still being crate trained but my bearded collie just hangs around the house all day. She too never touches anything so I wonder how she keeps herself entertained. The one nice thing with a heavy shedding dog though, you can follow the trail of fur. Though she'd never let us catch her, I know she takes over the couch when we leave. She thinks she's being sneaky but the ring of fur tells another story! How old is Duncan? My 5 month old, Clyde, loves the same kind of toy-- the stuffed squeaky tug type stuff. I've found the more annoying the squeak, the better. He has a large plush mouse that sounds like something between a whoopie cushion and a piglet and he couldn't be more happy running around the house squeaking. I've been home sick with pneumonia for the last 2 weeks and I'm starting to have nightmares about that noise but I don't have the heart to ruin his good time!
I think some dogs just aren't "toy" dogs! Sydney could care less about toys. Presley loves playing ball - and loves chew toys - but she usually rips them to shreds so I don't buy them anymore.

I would recommend a KONG - you can stuff it and freeze them and it keeps the dogs occupied for a while.
Clyde used to like his Kong a lot until I bought the treats to stuff in it. We'd use it like a ball and it was great for his teething. Then I tried the treats. He loved the first bite but just got really mad that he couldn't get at the rest of the treat right away. He understands it's inside but I think he's just too lazy to put forth the effort Now everytime I bring it out to play he looks at it like it's the devil and goes to get something else!
That's so funny...lol.... maybe a kong with just kibble in it would be easier? Most of it would fall out... can't get easier than that! LOL
Here's some recipes for the KONG if anyone wants to try them...

I used to put cherrios and peanut butter in it and freeze it.
Ben is 3 1/2 months old and plays with his toys constantly. His favorites are a tennis ball tied in a sock (he can fling it across the room and chase it himself) a stuffed octopuss (I tie one leg to the coffee table let, and he tugs at it) and his Kong stuffed with treats.

When I groom him, he holds one of the brushes in his mouth (I guress that counts as a toy.) But mostly, he likes to pester the other two dogs.
We've had really good luck with Chelsea (fingers and toes crossed) as she has not been too destructive when we are out. The best I can tell when I arrive home is that she amuses herself with the bouncy rubber stuff, kongs, balls, we found this really neat collapsable ball (looks like a helix) made out of rubber, she can squeeze down and it will collapse but when she lets go it springs back into to shape and goes bouncing off in irregular bounces (like a kong) and she pounces after it. We bought it at PetSmart, and it comes in a variety of sizes. I always find these toys strewn around her area or in her crate when we get home, I think they provide her with some stimulation but they are also chewable, safely chewable, better than leaving a nylabone. I inspect them each night and so far no damage, so no small pieces coming off that could pose a choking hazard.

On the subject of the kong, Chelsea LOVES her jumbo one that we fill with treats when we are going to be gone for longer periods. She works it relentlessly, but never manages to get all of the treat out. She gives up until we come home and then it is the first thing she runs to "show" us, she grabs it and drops it at my feet, because I am a well trained sheepie moma I pick it up and pull out the smidgen of treat that is left and give it to her. I guess I have through positive reinforcement trained her to not bother getting that last piece out!

Up.
I find that putting Easy Cheese spread instead of "treats" keeps Yuki busy forever ...and there really wasn't anything to "figure out." ...not much to licking the cheese out. haha ...but it keeps her busy long enough to clean the kitchen floor. :)

I only put it in 3 little slits (one of our kongs has slits specifically for spreads) because I feel putting it in too many is too much for her.

I let the other dog have the peanut butter spread since the OES throws up from it.

My only problem is learning how to put the spread in fast enough before someone does the wiggle dance around mommy knocking her poor sister out.

This is also our first dog (combined fiance and my experience) that appreciates us leaving the tv on. She really STOPS, stands on the edge of the couch and won't move for 10+ minutes because she's concentrating so hard on the "motion/action" she sees happening on tv. Maybe you're dog would like some tv? This is the generation that watches tv instead of reads a book.
Lennon and Sofa's favorite toys are whatever the other may be playing with... Lennon likes hard platic things (Walmart's hangers are an old time favorite!) and Sofa likes soft textures from plush chewables. Old navy's frisbees are something they love to retrieve too, and they are virtually indestructible, if your dog likes to chase things, I really reccomend those. Also, when your dog is large enough, get him a cheap basketball and watch him go crazy chasing it and trying to pick it up.

These guys go trough toys at an alarming rate, they completetly destroy their tug toys in about a week or so and the tennis balls just dissapear in their jaws. We ended up stopping going to the pet stores to buy them tug toys, instead we hit the flea markets and buy them used stuffed toys for about $0.75 each, we remove the eyes and noses, sew them back and give them to our doggies. It's a much better solution for our wallets and they always have something to play with!
Lennon and Sofa sound like Jack and Annie. One of them can be sleeping peacefully and the other one can go get a toy and the sleeping one jumps up to take it away. LOL
I have never tried to play frisbee with Jack or Annie. I need to get one for them. I think they would like it.
The all time favorite toy...other than a ball...is the I-cube. We put lots of little toys and treats inside and Jack will spend hours getting it out. Annie will too...(when Jack doesn't have it). Annie has always been a chewer, so most of the time she is chewing on a toy.

Stormi and co.
What is an I-cube? Where can I get one? - Duncan is 3 years old (I think someone asked how old he is).
Thanks for all the new ideas for toys. I'm going shopping soon!

Oooops! The link for the Iqube Large by Revival wasn't working.... Anyway, it should be working now. Sorry for the typo...
I had purchased the large, but I would bet the Jumbo would work as well.

Basically it's a soft cube made of fabric with slotted holes on each side. Inside the cube are 4 squeaky balls (I have also seen a version that has bumble bees). Dog sticks his/her snout, paw, whatever to get the ball out. My guy loves this toy. He'll spend his time getting the balls out, and squeak them incessently. We'll also play fetch with the cube part.

Best tip I could suggest, and it is in the directions, is to bury it in your dirty laundry for a day. He seems to have the most interset in the toy after I do that.
My vote is for the I-Cube too. Frank loves running around the house squeaking on the balls all of the time. He tries to get 2-3 in his mouth at a time too just like a magician. I just saw that you can get cheaper ball refills at SitStay.com. I'm going to stock up on the balls as they always seem to disappear under our furniture regularly.
My Luke is almost 8 and his very favorite thing is a gray teddy bear thing we call baby. At night we tell him to get baby and he will lay down with and mouth it until he goes to sleep. Even though he has never torn it up we are on our 6th one, with a ready supply just in case. Beau and Daisy don't care about toys or bones . Rosco has a soccer ball he is crazy about and will spend lots of time kicking it and then trying to catch it. When Rosco is bored he'll grab baby and shake it in Lukes's face so someone will chase him.
The best toy I ever bought for Charlie is this very hard rubber ball with a texture on the outside and a hole through the middle. Inside there is a jingle bell. I think I bought it in Walmart. He LOVES it! He just runs around with it in his mouth, throws it on the floor (or at you), drops it so it rolls under things. He kept himself amused with it the other night for 2 hours straight! Best $4.99 I ever spent!
I'd have to say in this the Kong is a fav...I put kibble in and peanut butter, or soft dog treats.

the other things is the Holey Treat balls, or football. The balls come with different size hole and are great for biscuts, and the football with the smaller holes is perfect to fit a full hot dog in, or stuff with small treats. remy will spend all day until she get it cleaned out...well it actually only takes her 10-20 min.

The other thing she loves is bully stick (Dehydrated Bulls Pe**s), she won't leave it alone until it's all gone. I also have just about all the other toys, she likes to fetch with, or play tug of war with.
Honestly, Nothing betas an empty 2 liter bottle. Lily punts it around all day. Give them a toy and they always play with the box!
Too true on the bottles!
Benny has been known to steal pop bottles before we are fisished drinking from them!!!
LOVES the I-Qube. Got Poh a Jumbo and his cousin curtis a Large. What a GREAT toy. See my pics in the pic posting!

$7.74 for the Jumbo:

The I cube looks great! I will have to get one for the Zoe Monster!
She loves her kong with peanut butter and kibble inside. I freeze it so that it last longer and when we really want it to last put a dog biscut in sideways with the peanut butter!
Abby's favorite toy always seems to be what the other pups are playing with at that moment.
