I feel a crate is essential due to the fact that any motel has guidlines for pets. The Pear Tree's rule: Pet may not be left in the room alone for more that 30 minutes. And must be crated. We had many complaints about last year's motel which led us to search for a more human-friendly place.... The Pear Tree is a newer motel and we are hoping it will be OUR Sheepiepalooza Motel for years to come. As far as crates I can only tell you my experience and how I got Heart to love her soft crate. Two things happened before I decided I needed to get Heart used to a soft crate....I knew I was going to Nationals (in Sept. 2008) and I knew I wanted to get involved in Rally. It was important to have a special place for her to relax and feel secure. Anyone who has ever attended and show or performance event or who has traveled with their dog for that matter, will agree with me. I also knew I couldn't just go to a Rally meet or a strange motel and shove her in one. We all bring something from home when we are traveling to make us feel good......I bring my pillow... I purchased a soft crate and put it up in our family room with the door opened. I put her toys, her blanket and a couple of 'good' treats in it and just let her make it her own....and she did!!!! It was amazing how easy it was!!! The test came at our first Rally meet. Judi and I went together and we put our soft crates next to each other, unzipped the door...Harry walked into his, Heart walked into hers and they both laid down. We zipped the crate and sat next to them. She was FINE!! I was very impressed and excited. Now, whenever we go anywhere, my crate goes up. I know if I need to, I can put her in it for some down time. It's GREAT!!!!!! I am going to quote Maggie McGee IV from 4/08 ((((gosh....Nita....I sure hope you don't mind, but what great advice!!!))) Quote: I'd recommend a soft-sided crate for travel IF your dogs are crate trained. If they're not used to being crated, they can get out of even the most expensive ones when they're stressed.
Our soft crate takes up almost as much room folded up as the wire crate but it's easier to assemble and does not snag clothing or damage your car. Some hotels require plastic under the crate. We keep a cheap shower curtain packed in the crate bag. We use car harnesses on our dogs as well. Not only is it safer in case of an accident, the dogs are secured in the car until you're ready to release them. Scary thought, having one jump out at a rest area or other high-traffic area. Definitely bring raincoats for the dogs. Most everyone did for Sheepiepalooza last year and it actually caused it NOT to rain. thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Other than the local feed store or a national store like Petsmart, are there any suggestions where we should buy a soft-sided crate? I've never owned one. Thanks. |
Here is some information on soft crates that was posted 4/5/09

Tonks and Luna are going to have a hard time making this transition, I think:
Joking aside, do they have to be crated all the time, or just when left with no one else in the room? |
Patch wants to stay with Tonks and Luna, their beds look very comfrotable. Of course, she'd sleep on hot coals to stay near me, but I think it would behoove her to stay where there is comfort. |
