Packing? You mean you don't just shove stuff in a bag the day you leave?
Wow - impressive. If you aren't used to traveling to event with your dog - remember to bring water they are used to (I also use bottled water whenever I travel to limit tummy upsets.) A CRATE!!!!! not only will you need one at the hotel, but with so many sheep dogs around it is very easy for your dog to get over stressed - apparently even they seem to feel the energy charge other dogs pick up on Taking a crate to the Sunday event will help you and your dog relax. If you have time two of the things on my - one of these days- to do list in St Louis are the arch and the zoo (one of three free zoos in the US). |
^^^^ GREAT Advice,,,,Kerry...
Also, If you have rain gear for you and your pups, you may want to bring them!!!! May is an IFFY month in St. Louis...MAY rain......MAY not rain.... Last year, we had a sprinkle on Saturday afternoon, so most of us took out our doggieraincoats ((and umbrellas for US!!)) Also, it is a good idea to bring those folding chairs in the bag??? You never know when you will need one!!!! Other than that, just you~~~ your pups~~~ and~~~ your sense of humor,,, ,cuz we never know what will happen at SHEEPIEPALOOZA!!! Some sheepies just love to jump in the Grand Basin.... Some sheepies love to roll in ''interesting'' things on the ground..(right Allison...Judi?????) Some sheepies just love to play with other sheepies BUT EVERYONE HAS A BALL!!!!!!!!! (((can't wait to me you guys!!!!)))) |
sheepieshake wrote: Some sheepies love to roll in ''interesting'' things on the ground..(right Allison...Judi?????) Unfortunate, but true........ sheepieshake wrote: Some sheepies just love to play with other sheepies
My guy LOVES that too........ As you can see .................... Harry can't wait for Sheepiepalooza! |
Baley is excited--he has been shopping for the trip and he is bringing his "Memorial Day" head piece! Baxter chewed his up and needs to go shopping for a more durable hat--he is thinking maybe a sombrero for the Mexican night!! Rain Gear??? guess we will go shopping again! The boys are excited! |

Charlie has never been in a crate before...do you think he'll freak out? Is it really "required"? |
Not required, just recommended. Just make sure he has a place to "chill out" if he needs some down time away from all the sheepie madness.
Also, I've got a packing list on a Word document (because I am such a TYPE A personality ) that you are welcome to use if you want to see it. Just PM me your e-mail address and I'll send it to you. |
A crate is not required.... but .......
you CANNOT leave your dog unattended in the hotel for more than thirty minutes. We are asking everyone to abide by this hotel rule so as not to ruin our relationship with the hotel. Also if you are using a soft-sided crate you would not want to leave your dog unattended because they can "break out" if they are stressed and thus ruin your crate. So if you want to segregate your dog at the event or need to leave your dog anytime during the weekend I would suggest using your car as a crate (if the weather is cool enough with the windows down). At the event itself, as Tammy mentioned, a soft-sided crate is the perfect place to "chill out" if they need a nap or some down time. And it can be a great place to train them in it because you will be right there with them. To get Harry used to it before I started using mine at an event, I set it up in the family room with the one end open. Then I praised him for going in. You can even give your dog thirty minutes of "down-time" a night while you watch television, do dishes, etc. Just stay in the room with them, tell them to lie down, maybe even give them something to keep them busy (a kong, a bone to chew on) then let them out at the end of the thirty minutes. This will make it a very positive place to be - and therefore a place of security for them. They may whine or cry or scratch to get out but a firm "Fido, NO!" will stop that. Harry who is not in a crate during the day when I work LOVES his crate when I take him places. He knows it is his "place", goes right in and plops down. He is a happy camper especially when he can see me going about my business. I hope this helps. |
WOw - only thirty minutes? hmm that isn't even enough time to go get dinner.
If its really hot out what is the alternative - other than skipping events to give the dogs a safe cool resting place? |

LOL, I love that you have your list so organized!! My saving grace is that we travel to dog events so often I don't have a chance to forget....otherwise I make a manual list. And I really truly love lists! I always start the list out with *the dog*......Todd just laughs at me! I will be making one, as I get these random thoughts that I am going to forget to pack the AKC-CGC paperwork, the one thing I can't stop at a store and replace! Mostly, I am mentally planning how to pack and whether we will take the bumper carrier or actually need a small trailer with the Element.... seeing we will have 3 humans, 3-4 dogs and all our stuff. |

I am trying to envison where I can squeeze in every item and how small of a bag I can get away with for myself cause I want to bring the RAV and there isn't alot of extra room. |

Kerry - if you have a hitch, I would definitely check into those rear bumper carriers. They work fabulous. I got mine last year before we road tripped from Minnesota to NY and Cape Cod and it was a lifesaver. I didn't have a hitch, but I made a quick appt at U-Haul and got one installed. Nice thing was, you don't lights like a trailer does, your car tail lights are all that is needed. (They have reflectors) I also used it last fall for hauling stuff to the nationals. I put my big cooler on it, also put stuff in plastic totes and bungie them on. On the trip to NY we wrapped a tarp around it, but not really needed. More for a deterant if anyone was thinking of pilfering through it... |
I like that idea, Dawn, but I can't figure how to make it work on the Highlander since the door swings up and that's where the dogs load. I can see it working great with the Element, though, since you can load dogs from the side.
I need something, though. I hate stuffing everything into the back seat. I've been looking at the overhead cargo carriers. |
I have a soft sided over head carrier - but for an 18 hour trip I prefer to be as aerodynamic as possible. Unfortunately the RAV opens out and the only way to load is from the back so unless I fit a Jeep Wrangler type storage rack to the back, not about to work either. Of course the only way to carry Morgan's crate is on the roof - unless I get him a smaller "vacation" one |
The weather, hmmm,
Bring along for the humans, shorts and light t-shirt, pants and a light jacket. Last year we needed pants on Saturday and shorts on Sunday. It can be a little cool, and downright HOT....in the same day. |
Well guys, I think Val and Wendy can tell you all i had every intention of coming to Sheepiepooloza. And i 100% apologize to not getting the raffle items off to you too........ NEXT YEAR and there better BE a next year.
I am putting ol Dunk an Dee and peepers into the Vet's boarding kennel and heading South and East. I have a show with the 2 younger ones this weekend.... with my partner showing for me thank God!!! and then Tuesday i have an appointment with a NeuroSurgeon in Dallas. He comes with high ratings soooo we'll see. Then Thurs. night i fly out to Korea. I have to admit I am a bit nervous yet excited. I have always done well in South America, Central America and North America as i speak Spanish, and Europe as most everyone speaks English but this is going to be ONE BIG CHALLENGE i have a feeling!! I think i am going to go get a spray tan so i'm not so white.......... before i go. I told Norm I just really want to soak in some of the hot mineral baths there and really relax. Then we can start seeing some of the Budah temples etc! i'll save my spending for last couple of days! They say Korea or Korfu are the cheapest places to buy a fur coat, but i'll wait til fall for that.........(sorry you will never take the texan out of me) but will look for some black pearls too......... oh well........... goodbye will check in when i can. |
I wasn't sure where to post - but just letting those who know him, that Simon won't be gracing us with his basset hound presence this weekend. He hasn't missed a Sheepiepalooza yet!
Simon had surgery on Thursday to have a rapidly growing mass removed. It appeared a few weeks ago, then never changed. Weekend before last, I came home from a show, and it had doubled while we were gone So, Simon went in for surgery to have it removed. I was hoping it was a fatty cyst, or something similar - bassets are very prone to them. But, it was a tumor. Now we are waiting for the lab results. ******Warning - potentially gross picture if you don't like seeing incisions****** Here is a picture from the day after- and another to see where it is - Simon is doing well. He had his 2 extra days of pain meds - he was spunkier than I would have liked! Amazing the bounce and running a 10 yr old basset can do on pain meds! He has to have his sutures (he has 14) in for 2 weeks so I thought it best he stays home with Todd. I don't want him getting into the play (which he loves) over the weekend or getting his incision infected. So, Simon has to miss the fun. He will be REALLY peeved when he sees I am taking foster boy Otis (OES) instead. |
Ahh so sorry - Morgan will miss his calming presence. I hope he continues to do well. |
Simon - you will be missed this weekend. We send positive thoughts your way!!!! |
Oh poor Simon. Special thoughts for him and sorry we won't get to meet him. Hope he continues to do well. |
oh...Dawn...I am so sorry..Please give that sweet boy a huge kiss from me and my herd....
I am so sad that we won't be seeing Simon this year!!! Sheepiepalooza won't be the same!!! I really mean that. |
Awww...poor Simon! I really hate that, Dawn. I do hope the lab results are benign. |
