Poor Max and his new problem. Sluggish Thyroid.

This guy can't catch a break. I mentioned this in my other thread -- the one about the poo, but thought I would start a new one, in hopes that others have dealt with this.

Max has had a tummy ache and parasite issues. We dx that on Saturday. Well-- he was still just not himself. Lathargic, lots of hard panting, sleeping LOTS more than usual, so back to the vet we went. First off, he was having a reaction to the sulfur meds given for the parasites.

Secondly, the vet wanted to do more testing and blood work. Everything came back fine, with the exception of his thyroid, which is underactive.

That explains several things that have been happening. Suttle, but still concerning. I am picking up his thyroid meds today.

We are hoping this helps rejuvinate Max. I am feeling really guilty right now. The parasites were bad enough... but now the thyroid that should have probobly been checked a couple of months ago. We thought he was having a set back from his spinal surgery two years ago. (sigh)

Guilt? Why? 8O Do you expect yourself to be clairvoyant?

Changes in thyroid function can be very gradual and hard to detect. Lots of VETS miss the signs, and/or don't think to check. Max doesn't sound like he has the obvious signs, really, so good for your vet for thinking to check! and good for you for taking his dark poo seriously and, hopefully, good for Max who will be feeling better on all counts soon. :D

I say kudos to you and your vet for catching it. I don't know if dogs are like humans, but I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid last year. I hadn't realized that my brittle hair and puffy face were symptoms. Since being on the meds, I am more active, my hair is softer, and my face is not puffy anymore. I've had no negative side effects. I hope Max feels better soon.
I have a hypothyroid dog - only two when he was diagnosed. The meds help, he is still lazy though :D

My biggest issue is maintaining a good weight - the meds don't always help with that but they did improve his activity level. He is also my dog with Lyme and digestive issues. I am sure there are inter-connections.
Our vet was right on it when we said he had been sluggish and that he had been very "cautious" with his hind legs. When he walks, he is tenative when putting his paws down, and at times walks "drunk". Of course, given his history, we thought the worst about his spinal injury. We even made an appt next week with the surgeon who preformed his surgery two years ago. Seems that an underactive thyroid in dogs also causes neuropathy!!! She was keenly aware that this could be an issue.

I love our country vets! Both of them in the practice are so caring and very wise. The techs and staff are so familiar. If I see them in the grocery, they ask about Max. Just wonderful!

Now, let's hope Max is on the mend for a while. :(
