Diarrhea all last week, but seems bit better now. Throwing up water occasionally after drinking. Still eating (up until today) but not nearly as much as usual. All morning he's been switching between being super sleepy and his usual bouncy self. Can hear his stomach gurgling and squeaking and he's been eating lots of grass. Not sure if this is related but he's been growling and barking at everything since last night (Bally barks very rarely) and was crying a lot this morning (sometimes that's just because he wants attention though ) Any ideas on what might be wrong? I hope it's nothing serious he has done lots of these things before and gotten over it easily, maybe it's just another puppy thing. |

Oh and he has a pretty darn stinky aroma he's just reminded me of that |
From your first post, it sounded a bit like worms but the stink sometimes means giardia. . . I hope the Vet can figure it out and that Bally feels better soon. |
Dont feed him just keep the fluids up till you see the vet, if it is an intestinal upset piling food into him will only cause more problems.
From your description it does sound like Giardia, take a sample of his stool with you to the vet, easier that way to have one hot off the press as they say for the vet to look at. Best wishes for Bally if it does turn out to be giardia medication will clear it up along with a basic bland diet and pick up of the poo straight away with disinfecting the area where he went after. Sometimes too with a diagnsosis of that a second course of medication is usually needed to get rid of it completely. We had giardia years ago that went through the pack and it aint no fun (Specially for the owner and hairy poopie butts) but it does clear up with good management and thank goodness for medication, usually a metrogyl type of medication. Most important no food at the moment just keep the fluids up till you can get to the vet. Keep us posted and give bally a gentle hug and hope all is well soon. |
Thanks for all the information! How contagious is Giardia? Bally's best mate has been staying with us for the past 2 months and just went home... I'd better ring mum and give her a heads up |
sour stink can also result from vomiting. Morgan stinks when he has pancreatitis. |
Just tell your mum to keep an eye on him and any sign of loosness or jelly poops or even real pungent smelling poo to take him to the vet also. Giardia is picked up quite easily with cross infection
Hopefully it is not that and just a tummy upset. If not dont worry a vet will help clear it up. With giardia they get the diarrhea, highly toxic in smell and sometimes coated with like a sausage skin (Mucous) covering the poo and sometimes the vomiiting as well, nasty thing it is. |

Just gave mum a ring and apparently Louis had diarrhea exactly like you described it last night... sounds like you might have found the culprit. I hope it doesn't spread through the rest of her pack now but I've passed on all your advice so fingers crossed. I have a feeling this is going to be a trying week! Poor little Bals |
Just rang the vet and he's all booked in for his afternoon so I'll let you know how things go ASAP |
Good luck.
Hope you get to the bottom (pardon the pun) of the problem and sort it out quickly. Hugs to poor little Bally. |
Just got back Bally's temp was a bit high and has a very tender tummy, but aside from that all seems well. Vet wasn't convinced that it was a tummy bug and thinks it might be something to do with his diet, but has put Bally on some Antibiotics just in case and said to bring him back for more tests if things don't improve. Poor pup has some long days of tablets, boiled chicken and rice coming up but it could be so much worse!
Thanks again for all your advice I'll keep you posted on poopy puppy's progress |
Just wanted to add that giardia can be passed to humans. Hopefully it isn't that, but just make sure you are adament about washing your hands! |

Did you tell the vet the dog you were looking after has now started too.? Elevated temp as well still think it is a tummy bug and not dietry as he has a temp & your mums dog has now got the runny ones too. Did they get into something together at the same time to eat that upset them both? Did they eat the exact same diet as each other when you had them both? If not then sus for it being a dietry upset with both having the runs. Just in case still sterilise and pick up straight away when he goes. |
Yep told him all those things. I think he was suspicious about it being dietary instead because Bally was so full of beans when we took him in don't think he believed me when I said that was Bally on a slow day.
I still think it was all a bit too much of a coincidence with mum's dog though so I am following all your advice with cleanliness too If it is Giardia, will the antibiotics still help? |
I hope he feels better....
That is kind of funny though that "Bally is full of beans" |
Hmm... well Bally seemed a lot better, has his usual energy and appetite back, no more throwing up water, firmer stools, etc. But then last night he threw up all of his dinner
The only thing I did differently yesterday was to give him his worming chews. Do you think that could have done it? Also, I gave them to him at about 4.30 pm and he threw up at around 4am... would that have been enough time for the dosage to have been given to him r will I need to give him another round? |
what is it with 4 am? that is when my guy always throws up at night!
I would hold off ont he wormer (check with the vet of course) unti you are sure his stomach is calmed down. |

How is Bally??
Have the antibiotics helped? Antibiotics are used for giardia but I dont think they're your standard run of the mill ones. Hope things are getting better for Bally. |
He's pretty cheerful now Mind you he kept me up all night because he suddenly decided he was teething again! He chewed a cardboard box, a shoe, a book, a cushion and a chair No idea what got into him... fiance says it's all the starch in the rice keeping him hyper all night |
Oh, and I'm hoping that the antibiotics are helping even if it is Giardia because he's taking metrogyl and that's what Lisa said they usually treat it with |
That's good then, just when the course is finished keep an eye on him and any sign of looseness after the course is completed get a repeat from the vet. Sometimes if it is giardia then sometimes more then one course of the drug is needed to get rid of it completely.
Glad to hear Bally is better even though he is chewing the house up Start bringing in a bit of his dry now, not too much into the mix of rice and chicken just gradual and see how the stools are and if OK increase over a few days till back to his normal diet. |
Sorry about the late update, we made last minute plans to go visit my parents in the land of no internet
Bally's almost finished his antibiotics, and he's got much firmer poop now. He has thrown up once or twice, but it's been hard to work out the cause of that when he's been running around like mad on the farm trying to stuff all sorts of thing into his chubby cheeks. I've been slowly changing his food so now he's on half rice half biscuits and he seems to be keeping that down pretty well. Now my only problem is going to be cleaning him.... he has a lovely green stain from playing in swampy green water with the other dogs |
