If someone else has the solution to the problem of sheepies loving to meet new people, please let me know, I'll help you publish a book
Do you use a training collar for walking Sinbad? That helped us a lot with Lennon and Sofa, just make sure the people who sells it to you teaches you the proper way to use it. Also, consider enrolling Sinbad in obedience training, the social nature of sheepies can make them very hard to control when going outside, they get very exited when meeting new dogs and new people. On the jumping on people, there's lots of advice in the forum archives, do a search and you will find lots of useful advise on that. |
Since we've been using the training collar (some people call it a choker, but NEVER use the one with the spikes with a long haired dog) we've had better control over Pooh. Training training training. When Pooh "greets" new people out on a walk and tries to jump, we snap down on the collar until he calms down. We put him in a sit/stay position until he pays attention, then we allow him to greet. |
I think it is normal puppy behavior. I wouldn't recommend snapping on the leash, but just step on it, the dog can still greet people, but isn't able to jump up, then give him a command like sit, and praise profusely. He will soon learn to sit when greeting people. |
When new people come over we ask them not to pet Jules until she sits down. I tell her "sit" and gently push her down. She then gets lots of attention. She usually then lies down and wants our guest to rub her belly. We are still working on her not putting her paws on their back or front after this is all over. She usually has calmed down significantly though. |
