For Murph it is more a "step" He refused twice! He Q'd in Rally Excellent but, NQ in advanced...go figure! There ya have it Murphy's Law Unleashed! Marty said it may be a long road to that RAE! (not a problem we traveled a long road to get him to let us pet him!!!!) |

Chewie had (non)jumping issues, but more when he was younger. I always blamed it on the fact that he grew up with a basset hound..... Well, that may be true but his brother also had non-jumping issues when he was younger. This despite the fact that he can stand next to his sister and jump over her - sideways - from a standstill. Put a bar in front of him and he'd try to crawl under!!! I think the fact that they are Sheepdogs pretty much covers it all. Tonight Mace did the weaves - still open about an inch or so with guidewires on - several times before she suddenly decided to start jumping down the line of guidewires instead. Why? Repeat after me: BECAUSE SHE'S A SHEEPDOG! Kathy - ask him if it's always the same type of jump? I.e. the bar jump but will jump the broad or the panel or...? I taught Che the concept of a jump was to jump it by starting him out on a panel jump (solid obedience one) so there was no room to do the limbo. Not that he didn't look hard to see if there was, just in case... 16" is so inconsequential to Murph I wonder if it seems like a jump to him or just some weird test..? I'm sorry about the leg, but you know those boys always bounce right back. Suggest to Marty that he check to see if he can find a log and a handful of whatever Murph loves best and praise the dickens out of him so Murph starts to view everything as a potential jump... Sure, it'll be a little embarrassing in the beginning when Murph jumps leaves, tall blades of grass, cracks in the sidewalk, but they'll find a happy medium Kristine |
These silly kids!
He said Murph usually jumps, I myself have never seen it! I can't watch Murph or he watches me and won't do a thing! Everybody at our club thinks that is crazy since he is such a daddy's boy! Oh well, tomorrow is a new day! Maybe, they will get back into the swing of it... it has been a while! I think it is just good that the boys are spending some time together...much needed! |
Luna doesn't like to jump in Agility either. She looks at me as if to say "really?" in a tone that would indicate that the whole thing is beneath her. Then she ever so sarcastically will go over the jump, one leg at a time, staring me down the whole time.
Luna really doesn't like Agility. Tonks likes it so much that often at the end of a row of jumps, she'll go back and do them again. No ribbons in this family, I can tell you that! |

Luna really doesn't like Agility. No part of it? I find that whatever you reward most becomes their "most favorite thing". Some times it's the flavor of the month, some things last a long time (Sybil rarely gets rewarded for the teeter anymore but it remains her most favorite obstacle. Actually, that probably means there is something intrinsically rewarding to slamming a board into the ground. Which, knowing her, I don't find hard to believe ) If Luna likes SOMETHING in agility (table? tunnel? anything?) ask yourself why you think she likes that. One of the mistakes we sometimes make is to reward the heck out of things we perceive to be difficult, but barely acknowledge that they jumped. If you put her in a sit-stay close to a say 12 or 16" jump and teach her to push up off her haunches and to jump nice and round over the jump See Ruby: you are not only (a) teaching her to jump well, but (b) building value into the jump (you're using LOTS of cookies when you practice these exercises) In the beginning you would treat lower to the ground to encourage the head down that Ruby does naturally. or you risk this: Notice how Luca (Ruby's dad, as it happens) can't take his eyes of the cookie in Sunny's hand? Now, back to Tonks. That's the bitch with the dark on her head, right? By all descriptions she has always been my favorite. (Sorry, Luna). I wouldn't be so quick to rule out ribbons...Offering to do extra things in a green dog is a GOOD thing in my book!!! Kristine |
My whole approach to Agility with Luna was a big mistake.
We signed up partially because I thought the girls would like it, but also because I wanted to strengthen their relationship with Adam, and strengthen his skills with handling them. The girls listen to me and follow all of my commands, and often don't give him the same treatment. I could see Adam was frustrated, so thought a class would help everyone out. I was wrong. I gave Adam Luna to handle, as she is the "easier" of the two girls; very easy going and docile. And Adam gets frustrated easily. But Luna is used to me giving commands, so she wanted to be handled by me, and when she saw Tonks with me, wanted to be with Tonks. So alot of the first round of classes was Luna leaving Adam's side to be with me or Tonks, and then being made to go back to Adam's side. I think she associated the class with "I don't get to be with mom, and Tonks does". Actually doing the Agility tasks became secondary. And I think it hurt Adam's feelings to see how bonded the girls were to me. And he started to be less involved. By the end, he would hold whatever dog I wasn't doing the Agility run with, and I'd run both dogs. So it was a negative experience for Adam and for Luna both. But I'm not giving up; our personal trainer does a "tricks" class. She has experience working with Luna and with Adam, and both really like her ALOT. I think if I enroll Luna in Tricks with Adam as her handler, and Tonks and I don't even go, it will work. Luna will have to look to Adam for her commands, as I won't be there. And if she acts up, Adam can look to our trainer for help, who he respects and likes. And Tonks and I can go play at a park or something. |

Okay; she liked one thing, but it wasn't going to win her any prizes. Luna would wait until I started my run with Tonks, and then she'd leave Adam's side and run to join Tonks; she loved doing the course with Tonks. And it was super cute to see the two of them doing it together. But after that happened a few times, we had to leash her so she wouldn't run to join her sister and I on the course. And if I handled her, she'd look around to try and see where Tonks was. |

I wouldn't be so quick to rule out ribbons...Offering to do extra things in a green dog is a GOOD thing in my book!!! Kristine yes thats Tonks. She's REALLY into Agility. The class was held at an empty space in the building our doggy daycare is in. When I take them to daycare, Tonks runs around the side to the door to Agility class, even though class has been over for a month now. She really misses it. I'm trying to arrange for them to let me use the equipment, but its not working out so far. Speaking of doing "extra things"; at the end of Tonks' run, when we had to cross the room to get back to our position in line, Tonks always cut across the course to jump on and run over as many pieces of equipment as possible. Its like a giant doggie playground to her. I'm hoping to get some time this summer to build some equipment for our back yard. Oh and on the subjects of favorites? Live with Tonks for a week and she may not be your favorite anymore. I love them both to death, but both are such individuals, and have thier own positives and negatives. Like Luna is such a pleasure to walk. She follows her commands so well; she relaxes into her grooming while Tonks wiggles, squirms and can get snappish at the brush, and Luna doesn't roll in poop! |

I have a "good" sister and a "challenging" sister as well. Out of curiousity, do you happen to know which personality Adam is most drawn to? Not that he doesn't love them both, but...there's always a slight preference, deep down, at least in personality type, not necessarily actual dog. By the way, there is actually a (non-regular) class in USDAA called brace where two dogs are run at the same time by one handler... Kristine |

Kristine I think if he had to pick; if in a "worst case scenario" Adam and I went our separate ways and he could take one dog, he'd take Luna. She's my "sensitive" girl and I think her thoughtfulness really appeals to him. Plus; Tonks was SO hard to train, she was a handful for so long, that Luna was our "easy dog". Luna sleeps at the foot of his side of the bed, and sleeps next to his desk while he works. I really think in the right setting, Adam training Luna will work out wonderfully. But I think that for it to work, Tonks and I need to not be there as distractions. |
OMG!!!

Too funny! Sue's my agility instructor and the person who did the OES agility seminar we just had here in WI a couple of weeks ago. I'd seen this video before and it made me think that when the girls are both a bit more seasoned I may try it -- I think they usually offer it at our fall USDAA trial. Brooks and Flame are mother and daughter, as I recall. In Mace and Sybil's case I have visions of them arguing over who gets to go in the tunnel first and whose big butt is taking up most of the table, having one grab the other's butt hair so she can't exit the tunnel and then I have to crawl in there and get them, and probably a few things I haven't even anticipated yet But it does look like fun. But it does look like fun. Kristine Tonks would go into the chute followed by Luna; part way in she'd wonder who was behind her, turn to check, Luna would plow into her, and then they'd start wrestling. Everyone would be laughing, and I'd be trying to untangle my dogs from the nylon. |
