Finally, The Biggest/Best Grooming Tool!!

Well after far too many years of killing my knees by kneeling besides a tub and torturing my back by reaching over to manouver and spray my dogs while bathing them, I now have what is undoubtedly the biggest and arguably the best grooming tool, a raised tub!! While the bathroom itself is still far from complete, in fact it is barely started, the most important fixture is in fact done! Yee hah!! I finished the final bit of caulking and cleaning of the tiles on this tub last night. It is ready to go, my back celebrates and my knees are doing their own little dance as well....

So I just had to share a few photos....

Lots more photos are available if anyone is building their own and wants a few details of how I did this one including a toe kick so I can get right up to the front face of it.

Humm, now to get at least one dog brushed out so we can christen the tub.............

WOW!! :o Boy, when you do a raised tub, you do it right!! That looks fantastic Carl!! :clappurple:

My Knees and Back are so jealous!! I have to bathe Genny today and they are already complaining.
WOW I have a raised tub and it is just that a tub raised cement walls and floor I need to show my hubby these pics!! Great job It is just lovely....
I have tub envy!! Is there a ramp?
Very nice. I love the toe kick idea too. Otherwise it kind of self defeats the whole raised tub benefit - your back still suffers.

Get brushing so you can try it out!
OK, that is brilliant. WOW
Cool! Looks fantastic!
Long time no see Carl btw.... welcome back...
Sweet!
Looks terrific! Nice work!
Nice job.
I am absolutely green in envy!! Great job.........I can't wait until someone who doesn't know asks why you put your bathtub up so high and don't you need a step stool.. :D
Wow Carl! A new career in Masonry in a possibility for you! In fact need a little work... or more than a little work.

Wonderful bath, and a great job!
I'm sooo jealous.
I've been shopping around for a shower fixture on a hose like the one you have, and thought I would be in heaven when I find one that works. The single lever tap is still a pipe dream and a raised tub is not even an option. Sigh
that is excellent. Summer is due her bath might do it today as I need to spring clean the bathroom anyway!
I could have used that tub yesterday.
I bathed Simon (the basset) and Otis (foster OES) in my regular tub. Not too bad - Otis has about 1 inch long hair and both pretty much just stand there, enjoying the bath massage....

I took Chewie into the Paw to use the raised stainless tub with walk up ramp, nice spayer, etc. All was well, we taught class, the dogs played outside on the astroturf, even Otis got to go swim in the pool with my friend who supervises in the pool room on Thursday nights.
We let the dogs (Chewie, Otis and the 2 male Samoyeds) outside, and Linda and I did last check for poops in the dog play yard. We get back in, and I look closer at Chewie's head - his spotless (previously anyway) topknot has yellow streaks in it  . Yes, he got his head PEED on!
So back to the tub area and stood with his head over the tub and do a rewash of the top of his head. Geez.....boys!
All,

Thanks for your kind words about my work and for the welcome back from Stacey. Since the dog bath is in what will be a full finished bathroom (toilet, people shower and vanity sink as well as the dog tub) I felt it important to do a nice job of tiling it. And perhaps more importantly I will be spending a lot of time there and a nice workplace really helps the work pass more pleasantly and seemingly quickly. I could have done a much more simple tiling pattern, saved a huge amount of time and probably even a few dollars by using simpler large 12"x12" tiles. But the cost savings would have been minimal and since I was doing this myself the extra time was of little significance. And being who I am I enjoy having my things being unique and the challenges that came with doing this design. It was actually a lot of fun although by the end of laying the tilesI was looking forward to the next and simpler stage of grouting!

Unfortunately Ron I am way way waaaayyyy too slow to do this for a living. I could never make a profit if I was paid per square foot and nobody would be willing to pay me a decent hourly rate so I guess I'll just have to keep keep my day job.

At this point I haven't built a ramp for the dogs. I'm still just young enough to be able to lift my dogs and put them into the tub. If it becomes too much of a hassle for me or the dogs then I'll build a portable ramp to get them in and out but I don't anticipate that will be an issue for a few years.

Sheepieboss, if someone asks about it being up so high maybe I'll tell them it's for night time baths of little kids. I often watched my brother bathing his kids at night and thought he suffered just a much kneeling down and leaning into the tub with them as I do with my dogs. I guess his advantage was that kids generally bathe up quicker than a fully coated Bobtail. Even at their grubbiest I don't think he needed 2 hours or more to bath one of them.... Martin and Virgil on the other hand, even when not especially dirty............

Again, thanks all for your kind words. It is good to know that even when things are tough there are good friends here.

Thanks and Cheers

I know that feeling. After being away on business on one occassion last year I was picking up the boys (Martin Virgil and Farouk) from the pet hotel. As we went out to the car they were having a bit of a pee-fest at the entry where all the dogs go potty. Well Farouk being rather tall, as Afghans are want to be, decided to lift his leg to pee - pretty rare for any of my boys - and of course you know what's coming next. Martin who had finished his pee and being quite a bit shorter than Farouk just walked right under Farouk to get to the other side of the column for his next marking.... Yep, a pee line right down his whole side from head to butt .... Arrugh.... Okay so quickly dry him down with the dribble towel and let him "air out" for a few minutes..... but even so the ride home was something of "perfumed" trip......

Thanks and Cheers

Forgive my ignorance but can I ask what a 'toe kick' is? I assume its some kind of recess underneath the bath so your toes can fit in - or is my imagination totally wrong! A picture would be really useful please!

I am planning my own 'dog room' at home at the moment but it involves lots of other things happening before I can give up my current bathroom over to the dogs but useful tips and seeing your pictures are helping me to plan it!

Thanks and it looks great by the way!

Exactly right. The toe kick is a recess at the base of cabinets and any other funiture piece or built-in fitting (in this case a tub) where you need to get right up to the front face. For cabinets they are generally about 3-4 inches deep and about 4 inches high. I built the toe kick for this one extra deep and high to ensure I would be able to stand right against the front face for extended periods without having to lean forward at all. I will loose a bit of the height when I put the final floor in but it will still be plenty high enough as I built in an allowance for that from the very start.

I'll post a photo later when I get home.

Good luck with your own dog room project and as ever don't hesitate to ask if you have further questions. We'll all look forward to seeing your results.

Thanks and Cheers

Carl
GOOD HEAVENS!!! What a WONDERFUL raised tub! :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

I shall be over with Rufus as soon as I have saved up for the plane ticket :D
BTW even **I** asked Carl why it was so high. He did indicate that he would be willing to make me a portable step....but considering the fact that he is the one to do all the bathing. He should be very comfortable. I was worried about the resale factor involved until he pointed out the "little kid" tub factor. Can you just imagine a mother with toddlers? She'd buy the house just for the tub!!! And the kid's would have a absolute ball!

Good job love! Hope I can see it in person soon!!!

Karen,

Sorry it has taken me so long to answer with a few photos but between a power outage later in the day that you posted your question, general running of the house and getting two of my dogs through this bath I've barely had a chance to breathe....... :phew: (Third and fourth dogs get their turn this weekend - I have to amortize the cost down right? )

Anyway, here are a few photos of the toe kick I built into the supporting structure. I made sure I built the toe kick extra tall so that when I install the sub floor and finished floor I will still have plenty of room for my feet. And yes I tiled all the surfaces of the toe kick including the top face (which you can just barely see due to the angle of the photo) to ensure everything is waterproofed.

And here is a shot showing the "fit". I find that my toes never really go in more than 2-3 inches otherwise my knees end up being pressed hard against the front face which is both uncomfortable and messes up my balance. Even so their I find that I don't have any problems reaching in to bathe the dogs and hence there is no back strain. :D :rimshot:

Hope this helps and as ever if you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask either on open forum or by PM.

Thanks and Cheers

Thank you so much - the pictures really help. We have got the builders coming in while we are away on holiday at the end of next month so I can show them exactly what I need now! I hope to build a grooming table right next to their bath so that I can get them straight from the bath to the table without them having to get down and then up again - that's the plan anyway!

Thanks again!
That looks very nice!!!
Handy to use, and looks nice as well. Can't beat that :D
Carl,

Thank you for sharing those pictures. I would of never thought about that idea. I cannot wait to show my husband the pictures for something to think about. We are new to this forum as well as to the breed. Our baby just turned 6 months old yesterday.
