Tax season - yuck! And when you have children in college, along with the dreaded tax season comes the dreaded FAFSA season, which is even worse!! My bad - for those who think I'm talking gibberish - FAFSA is an acronym for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It's a program run by the US Department of Education that the colleges use to determine if the student qualifies for student aid. And the FAFSA form can be a bear! 98 questions of the most intimate financial questions. The reason for this venting post is that I just got done with my daughter's renewal FAFSA online for shool year 2005-2006. Different schools have different deadlines, but ours wanted the FAFSA on file by Feb 15!!! Can you imagine! Most people just get their W-2's by the end of January, and then there's the mad rush to the tax preparer's to get that done before you can do the FAFSA. Luckily I only have to do this for 2 more years. Why couldn't we just be rich instead of good looking??? Okay, vent over. I just hate doing that form and needed to yell before calming down for bed. Can't wait till THIS is a "been there, done that!" Chris |

What's worse than filling out the FAFSA is paying off all the student loans that had to be taken out because the FAFSA determined that my family could "afford" x amount of $$$ to send me to college. I've been out of school for about 5 years now, and I'm STILL not even halfway done paying the loans.... ~Katie. |
oh Katie, I know that feeling! I'm still paying student loans too, and I'm a stay at home mom so I'm not even using my degree. I feel awful that my husband is paying for something I haven't used. Feels like we're wasting money, kinda. Maybe one day I'll use it! lol
I filled out FAFSA a couple of weeks ago to see if I how much it would cost me to go back to school - I was thinking of going back for an education major. They said my EFC was more than our state university's tuition!! This is from a household where only one person works, my husband attends school full-time along with his full-time job (thank goodness for GI Bill), and we have two children...my husband works civil service for the federal government, so it's not like we're well off, lol Sad as I am to say, that quickly changed my mind. As much as I would love to teach, I don't want to be paying double student loans. Agh, sorry...my own little FAFSA vent - lol |
Now I have to vent too because I had a mad at the government because of taxes day. I live in a city where the taxes are unrealistically high for the county, which translates to my paying almost $6000 a year in property taxes on a $200,000 house. I got my refund back today and it was adjusted by 50% because the state of Michigan didn't believe that I actually paid that much in taxes. How can they not just check before they do those kind of things? It's public record for crying out loud. Now I have fill out all this paperwork to fight the adjustment, which I shouldn't have to do in the first place because everything was right! ARGH!!!! |
I too hate Student Loans!
When I did the FAFSA forms they said that my parents made too much money to qualify. The finance person at school said that if my parents were divorced that helps a lot. I would think that that's a lot to do for your kids education but... My sister just went away to Penn State this year and our parents are now divorced and she doesn't qualify for any financial aid either. Now there is something about both parents working for the government that she isn't elligible. Apparently the screening process for any sort of grant is more stringent than getting aboard the space shuttle. |
FASFA is a pain - but it is nice to have. My dad doesn't get our tax info in until the LAST second so we never get any other type of assistance! (growls!!) And since he does that I have to take out loans because my school has been raising it's prices like crazy.
I almost feel guilty for going now. I HAVE to take out a loan now just to pay for the stupid thing. (I didn't have to before). Not to mention the economy around here sucks... and there aren't many employers around here that are very sympathetic to a school going college kid. It's either you are available all the time - or they don't want you. Also - My fiance wants me to stay home and take care of the house/him/pets (which I would have no problem doing btw) but I'm wondering if having to get yet another loan out would be a good idea or not. I also would feel guilty if he had to pay back a loan that I used for schooling - when I didn't even use it. I only have $3,000 in loans now... but that's quite a chunk of change - and if I keep adding on to it... (sigh) |
