I don't think I'm spoiling anything, but there will be a sheepdog episode of Dogs 101 coming up in the late summer. And my very own Alice-the-sheepdog will be seen romping around in some of the shots. We got a tip from a friend at the production company that they were looking for OES's and they used us for some pick-up shots. I'm not sure what the main Sheepie storyline is, but having watched previous episodes, the production value and quality of the program is top notch and it should be a great view. I'll certainly be letting everyone (and I mean everyone!) know when the program day/time is announced. Woof! |
|
That sounds great!
It is a good show, glad an OES episode is coming. |
Cool! I've been waiting and waiting for our breed to get featured. I always like to hear what shows say about OES so I can yell at the screen if they're wrong! |
For years they had a segment on that featured Jim & Grace Caplan & their OES. It was a nice program. It will be interesting to see what this new one is like. |

Yes, that one was on the show "Breed all About It". |
I'd love to see that ! but sadly I don't think we will get it over here...... |

That's what I was thinking too And, Jill - I'm big at screen yelling as well Kristine |
I'm guilty of yelling at the screen too. They just cant get it right...lol. |

Nothing to do with Animal Planet, but there used to be some big-show announcer who always chuckled and claimed the breed didn't need to SEE. I guess he's never had one run smack into a tree... I've never tried to let Sybil sniff for stock when herding, but instead put her hair up so she could actually see them. I mean, I know our dogs are talented and all, but really!! Kristine |

Kristine I heard that the other day again when they had a show from Detroit on. I doubt Winston can see any better than his sister without his hair up - and she walks into cars in the garage! I just laugh. |
Kristine, don't get me started on that guy.....................grrrrr. Not only was he well known for that BS about "they are far sighted and can see through all that hair" or they don't need to see.........he had serious miscomments about other breeds as well. Obviously I'm stalling to remember his name.........it's not coming thru this a.m. Fey.......now what is the first name?? |

Oh how exciting! Please let us know when it will air. |
Hi everyone,
I just got the schedule. The OES episode is airing: Oct 10, 9:00 pm Oct 10, 11:00 pm Oct 11, 4:00 am I have no idea what the footage looks like, or how much. Just look for Alice, in her full coat, and the skinny fellow in a hat would be me. Cheers! nick |
Thanks for the update.
I even have the weekend off, as I'm TDI/CGC testing on the 11th for our Twin Cities OES Club. Maybe have to incorporate that into the mtg! |
Cool, I keep watching the descriptions for the episodes since I knew it had to be coming soon!
Did you say anything that we're gonna have to give you a hard time about? |
"Did you say anything that we're gonna have to give you a hard time about? "
Probably Most of the footage was playing at the park - chasing toys, playing tug with a giant rope toy. There may be a shot of my grooming/brush work (destined for criticism!), and a couple "tough dog" barks at the door. But we shall see... |
I'm really looking forward to it. I've been going through the whole week in the guide looking so I'm glad you updated us! |
Thanks for the "heads up". Now I'll set my DVR so I don't miss it. |
We will be watching. |
We will be watching as well. |
Thanks for the update! Tivo will be ready! |
Just great! I have to be at a family wedding! And no, I don't know how to record it. At least not with this new TV & DVR & VCR machine. I'm lucky I can turn on the TV....the remote is just too complicated for me (and most of the time just not worth it)! |
I watched it this weekend! I always get a kick out of seeing any informative program involving OES. What did everyone think? |
Yea Alice!!!! You are a star at the park. At least they didn't say they could see well with all that hair. I thought it was a great segment. A big chunk of it was about the dog that has lymphoma. |
Great segment!!!! I LOVED it! Congratulatioms and thanks for sharing with us! |
I thought it was nice. They could've spent a little less time bumming me out with the cancer dog, though.
The one thing I was really glad to hear was the person at the end that said "I can't think of another dog that has more extreme grooming requirements." For awhile, in the beginning, they were making it seem as if it wasn't a big deal! |
I thought it was a good piece. Really liked it. |
I just watched it with Tonks and Luna and loved it! What a fun bunch of sheepies!!!! |
I stumbled upon it in the middle of the night over the weekend. It was great.
I do agree with Jill though that initially they made it sound like this was an easy breed for maintenance. And while I think that the breed is intelligent I do not think they are always easily trained - something that they said. I have had three and all of them seriously thought "Do I want to do this?" before they followed a command. |
okay; I'm glad you pointed that out. The "easily trained" bit. YES they are smart, and YES they do well at training. But I would NOT call it easy. They've got a bit much of a mind of their own to call the training "easy". But its definitely necessary to do, and to stick with it.
When Adam and I heard that it was "easy" to train them, we wondered if Tonks and Luna were sub-par somehow, or if we were. I'm glad to hear its not just us. |

There are days I wonder Alison if I have the patience to deal with training him. He picks up the behavior very fast but then he thinks every command is optional - I am working on teaching him it is NOT! |
We had been thinking the training was misleading too. We had always heard, and it's become a running joke, that a sheepdog has an ease of training 2.
When the dogs are being especially stubborn, we usually say 'boy, it's that ease of training 2'. |
I still haven't seen it
I set it to record on the DVR (last night, it was on again), but Todd shut it off to watch Star Wars for the millionth time.... And it isn't aired again this week, so still waiting....... |
Hi all,
Alice and I had lots of fun entertaining some friends for the premier. I was really impressed at how they packaged it all together. I did cock my brow on the ease of training bit too. Perhaps they're just working off of general intelligence, which oes seem to have a reasonable supply of. However, the pups seem to trust their own judgment over ours... It looks like the episodes are aired online eventually. Keep an eye out here if you missed it - http://animal.discovery.com/tv/dogs-101/episode-guide/ Cheers! nick & Alice |

Nick&Alice; I was wondering; which sheepie was yours? Was it the one running around at the park? You had been concerned about our "critical eye" as a group, which I completely understand. But I thought the sheepie playing in the white room with the ball and the bowling pins was just GORGEOUS, and that the one bouncing around at the park looked GREAT. The Park OES had a lovely full coat, and the best looking butt EVER. I hope that was your dog.
As for the rest; I recall about 3 puppies (all with very messy faces!) and of course the Lymphoma Sheepie. |
Ha, just a tongue-in-cheek concern over the group's criticism!
That was Alice at the park, and also a few shots of a superficial grooming in my living room, and a couple shots in my kitchen. I'm not sure who was the bowling-pin pup, but it made for some good entertainment. Alice does have quite the caboose! |
hahhaha; I did think the shots of "grooming" were very put on. Anyone with a sheepdog cold see that slicker was doing nothing to that Sheepie's face!!!
But oh what a rump! I thought your Alice was really great looking; sheepies should have giant bouncy butts! Way to represent the breed!!! |
Jake was nearly impossible to train. He was as stubborn as the day was long AND not the brightest bulb in the pack. Mulligan is soooo easy to train. He is so very smart. Winston (our four month foster) was soo timid and sooo eager to please he was easy to train very basic things, but he couldn't figure out what you wanted. But he soooo much wanted to do whatever it was that you wanted him to do if he could only figure it out oh please oh please oh please. |

Yeah, I noted the irony that I have a dog named Chewie, and a husband that stops the taping of an OES show to watch Star Wars..... |
I haven't caught it either...but man alive I plan on it.
Riley is easy to train but apparently like everyone it's getting him to realize it's not an option I'm giving him. Although I swear he really does get the options I give when I get frustrated. Like when he won't lay on the bed - "Ok, lay down or get off". He literally pauses and I never know if he'll lay down or get off the bed - it varies (because @ first I thought he just put the phrase to the action of laying down) |
