Non-showing sheepie in coat all year

I was wondering if anyone does this. I am on the fence whether to clip Nigel as it is warming up here. It was 93 here yesterday. I wanted to get him bathed and possibly clipped today, but his groomer is out.

Also, is it impossible to bathe this guy and dry him without a force dryer or grooming table. I never considered it before but after success with keeping the matts out of the long coat it is a thought. During the warm months of course.

Any suggestions?

It really depends on the dog and your schedule.

I have one I keep shaved, one who I shave occassionally when life happens
I'll keep an adult with a user-friendly coat in coat year round if the mood strikes me. Until Belle was 11 I think she'd been scissored back into a puppy cut maybe twice or so in her entire life, and that included keeping her in coat when she had her litter. I've shaved her once since then because she no longer enjoys spending hours on the grooming table. I don't think I've ever let an OES in coat air dry though. Too scary!

Belle naturally stayed pretty clean though and I usually only bathed her whites every couple of weeks or so, her grays maybe monthly, mostly because she was in the public eye a lot, between agility and obedience and rally and herding lessons and therapy work and demos and such. Her daughter's undercoat is that cottony stuff that mats more easily and she looks sooooo good in a puppy cut (masked bitch) that I wish I could just freezeframe her hair at a certain length. I have no desire to ever, ever see her in coat again. She's just dangerously adorable in her puppy cut.

The remainder all got the pig gene from Belle's sister, so all bets are off ;-) Mace's coat is pretty low maintainence, though, so she'll probably remain hairy.

I do keep Bella clipped. Nigel just looks so good right now, but he is a little dirty (mouth and feet in the whites). I am just trying to decide if I have my groomer clip him this week or leave the coat and just bathe him.
I won't go any shorter than a puppy clip. I am still browsing for the right dryer at the right price, and since he is afraid of a regular force dryer, I really think I need a strong cage dryer. I did see some on petedge.com that looked possible.

He is fine sitting in a crate with a dryer, but take out a hose and blow it on him and all bets are off. I still have a weak masochistic dream to show someday, so I am practicing to see if I will be capable of doing it. Ali did show me the elusive butt trim, so I know how that should look now.

I wouldn't air dry him all the way, he dosn't freak if I use the small hand held type (blow dryer size) of dryer.
I use the air force attached to the crate (I just sort of jam the end of the hose between the bars.) nobody seems to mind it much.
I leave Violet in full coat all year 'round. As you know we live in Florida. This is just my preference. :)
Sounds like Archie and his reluctance to have a bath!

I think if you can keep ontop of the coat and he is comfortable in your warm weather then, no reason why you can't keep him long, in some respects it is probably easier in warm dry weather to keep them long than continual miserable wet weather - which is a good proportion of the time here in the UK.

I take it you have aircon in your house/appt' that will help the drying a little as well as the warm climate.
I am going to have the groomer bathe him as soon as I can. I just always think he is hot...just looking at him gives me a hot flash. I would like to do it myself eventually...but I don't have the equipment yet.

We do have A/C but we use an evaporative (swamp) cooler most of the time. We live in the High Desert and it is usually dry heat. The central air cost$$$$$$$. More than anyone can afford in a good economy.
Gabriel, Jonah and Zach were in full coat last summer with no problem. We did have the A/C on from late April to early November and they don't really spend that much time outside anyway. Luke and Rosco are both short all the time.
I keep mine in a long coat all year. We've lived in three states with warm weather. I just have a high AC bill, which is probably more for me than for them.
We simply adjust the times we go outside for anything other than potty breaks.
ConAire is part OES and part Newfie. His coat looks more OES and I didn't want to have to shave it if it isn't necessary. We comb him several times a week so he keeps dematted. I just didn't know if OES were like Poodles and if their coat just keeps growing and growing.

Yes it does. does he shed like a newf?
I kept Tiggy in full coat all last summer with temps well over 110 degrees. I just use an evap cooler as its a fairly dry heat here, but it is ducted throughout the whole house.
And as someone else mentioned outside only for potty breaks during the day. I was up at 5.30 - 6am to walk Tiggy before it got hot. Although one morning we walked out the front door, up the street a few houses, Tiggy was panting so we went home. I checked the internet and it was nearly 100 degrees at 6am! 8O We just skipped outdoor exercise that day and wreaked havoc playing tugga games inside.
Much easier to keep an OES in full coat if you remove lots of undercoat. A Mars "Coat King" works great on a completely mat-free coat, otherwise I'd just clip down and start over.
No, he doesn't shed......yet. He is only 4months old. Thank goodness for the OES coat, eh? His Dam is fb Newfie and his Sire is fb OES. Both dogs are beautiful. Dad is full of energy and Mom is laid back. I got a laid back pup. He also took the coloring of his Mom but as he is gets older, he has the OES grey coming in on his back and legs.
Do OES have big flews like Newfies? If not, he got that from his Mom.
Got another grooming question though.
His beard area smells bad. I know it's probably because of the food and water. Has anyone been able to use baby wipes to help keep them clean and smelling good? Thought I would ask here first before trying.
Thank you all for your help!
Sandy
I use baby wipes on my OES cross ( Archie ) his Dad was a mystery caller  but his Mum was a full OES .......I use them on my West Highland Terriers too , infact I get through more for paws , faces and bottoms than I did when the kids were small !!

I have the Paul Mitchell dog wipes! They are great. They have them for general body, face and eyes, teeth and gums. I have all 3.

I got them from my (human) stylist, they were a cancer fundraiser. They even came with a bandana with the pink Ca ribbons printed on them. The package was a limited time offer, but I believe they are still available separately online.
i was going to keep my boys in full coat but living in fla i just ended up shaving them both and they are like new crazy dogs not the best job but they don't care
