This is my first posting. Yesterday I brought my 11 month old male OES in for a spring puppy cut and when I went to pick him up he was completely shaved. She said she had to do it because he had some matting. Although he looks like a completely different dog (my 4 year old boxer didn't recognize him) I realize his hair will grow back. My problem is that the dog (Max) seems to be very freaked out by it. He seems to be acting like a piece of his identity has been taken from him. He hasn't left our side since we brought him back from the groomer and he seems to be extremely loving. What could be causing this change in behavior? Thank you in advance for all responses. Judy A |

He's just cold. No really, most Sheepies have a different reaction to the spring time shearing. Mine love it and turn into frisky pups. They also stay close for a couple weeks because they are cold. |
Yes, it is not uncommon for them to act differently when they get shaved down. Some dogs act like they are embarrassed by it and others turn into energizer bunnies. Give him a few days to get adjusted and you'll have your "normal" boy back again.
Oh - and welcome to the forum!! |
Thank for your welcome and Thank you for your response.
My family and were beginning to feel horrible about the way he was acting. I guess feeling like we did this terrible thing to him. I have noticed he's starting to slowly be himself again in playing with our 4 year old female boxer but I guess it will take a little longer for him to be fully back to himself. Your dogs are absolutely gorgeous by the way!! Take Care, Judy |
You are quite welcome and thank you for the compliment. We're glad to have you join us here.
What is your puppy's name? Can you post some pictures? |
Hi Tammy,
His name is Max (full name Maximus). Can I post a picture in this forum or do I have to post in the pictures forum? Thanks, Judy |
I just put a picture of him in my post.... |
Guess Not |
You can post pictures here or in the pictures section - either way is okay. There are instructions here that will help you post photos.

Hi Tammy,
Thanks so much for your help. I posted a picture in the Photo Gallery, they said I would have to wait for the Administrator to approve it. I named it Maximus so it should be there shortly. Thanks, Judy |
Welcome to the forum from all of us here in St. Louis!!!! Can't wait to see pics of your sheepie |
Welcome to the forum |
Oh yeah, Mulligan is quite the cuddlebunny after a shavedown! |
Let me just throw out something here..........how did you react when you saw him? His antics may have been in part due to you and your family's reaction. Did you laugh, point, act shocked? Dogs are sensitive and may have though he did something bad and was trying to figure out what.
The other part is the eye site.......he can see!! The security of having the hair around the eyes was taken away and he has a full field of vision....yipes Yeah, the cold factor comes in too. If the temps are still just a bit too nippy, I put a t-shirt on them. Jack had his for about 2 weeks. MO was wearing one for a booboo on her side. They looked like opposing team players with their 2 different colored shirts......what the neighbors may say |
Hi Sheepieboss,
You know you might have a point. We weren't laughing at him but we were definitely in shock (like mouths hanging down to the ground in shock). Then also my 4 year old female boxer was incessantly drooling because she was nervous that another dog was in the house (she didn't recognize him) and that went on for almost an hour. We have showered him with love and affection since he's been back though and little by little he's returning to his old self. I will have explicit directions going forward to not shave him but leave 2" of hair at least. Does anyone know of a good hair growth method for OES' Thanks, Judy |
My first two sheepies always acted embarrassed after being shaved. Jenny is 9 months old and I will probably be getting her shaved in a couple of weeks. Not sure how she is going to act. I really don't want to do it, but her coat has been changing so much since she hit 8 months old, it's driving me crazy. I am hoping that by getting her shaved it will come in better. |
last year when Laika was shaved one of my cats freaked out for a week. Every morning when we come out of the bedroom he would put up his back and his tail would enlarge! So funny. |
I found the best remedy was what I call "rubbies." I go out of my way to rub the newly shorn, making soothing, loving sounds on them. They learn to associate the new sensations with love.
When I shave I don't bathe immediately. I want the others to know who the greyghost is.......or cow depending on which sheepdog was shaved. Plus keeping the bath until later in the day or next day, all those little hairs left from the clipping are washed away. Of course it helps that we do the shearing ourselves and the other dogs watch the undressing. Still there's a lot of butt-sniffing afterwards, "Is it really YOU?" Hair will return before you know it. One day you'll find your greyhound is getting "fluffy." |
Dutch seems to love being shaved, she turns into a mischevious little imp, full of this and that and does not seem embarressed at all |
Mine watch each other get shaved too. Yet they still do all that sniffing to make sure it's still "one of their own"! My girls never seem to mind being shaved or sniffed. The boys...a bit different story. They don't mind being shaved but they get really upset when the girls sniff them. Of course they are sniffing their "undercarriage"................"hmmmmmmmmm what's this I see here? Haven't seen anything under there in several months! Better check that out." |
