She said she needed help with an Old English Sheepdog with exceptional needs. We drove up to get Hairy on Valentines Day and although expected the worst. I was horrified at what was brought out to us. Hairy and his brother & sister have been living outside in a shed for the first two years of their lives. NEVER !!! allowed out. (picture 4 in my pictures is the inside of the shed) Never touched with a brush or comb. You can see Hairy in My pictures, Thes are the best of the bunch, but they are VERY DISTURBING. His brother and sister were adopted by people who worked at the shelter. I have Hairy he is afraid of everything and all noises, and of course he is not housetrained. We ruined many blades getting Hairy groomed, of course he had to be anesithized (sp) I am trying to learn how to post pictures, but in My pictures the first 3 are Hairy and the last is the shed he lived in. Hairy wil be a long time learnig how the good life is but he is coming along |

Omigosh those are the most wretched, saddest pictures I have seen. I cannot believe the filth. Those poor doggies! How can people be so awful? Thank you so much for taking care of these poor sweethearts. I can imagine how hard it was to shave him. I would love to see some after pictures. Those people should be put in jail. Good luck to you in taking care of him. I am sure it will be a challenge but he deserves some extra care. Poor dogs! |
Oh my god, that is heart wrenching. I hope someone reported those people.
Thank you so much for helping them, please keep us updated on his progress. |
OMG, what a horrible thing to do to any living creature.thank you for rescuing these poor babies. I hope that the people responsible will be severely punished |
You are an angel saving these poor dogs. I dont understand people. |
I don't even know what to say...except please take some photos of him clean and shaved so we can see what was under that horrible mess. I am appalled. God bless you for taking him. You are his angel. |
I don't even know what to say after looking at those pictures. I hope those people get what they deserve. How can someone put ANYTHING in those conditions. Thank you, thank you, thank you for saving their lives. Those images will be forever burned in my head of gross neglect and just plain cruelty.
If possible, I too would like to see "after" pictures. Just for some peace of mind for these guys. |
Poor babies.....
Thank you for rescuing them! It is hard seeing them like that... All you can do is look at the happy future for them now! |
I have no words. I am sick at the pics.
Thank you so much for taking in this poor baby. He must feel like heaven now. PLEASE let us know how he is doing. GOD BLESS!!! |
How horrific & sad!! The first image, you can't even tell that a dog is in there, he looks like a bunch of burned up & rotted clothing.
I am amazed that you kept it together enough to get the dogs away from her. I don't know if I could have restrained myself. Thank you so much for getting them to safety and new homes. |
Those people should be chained to a pole and left to rot, that really is sickening! |
The owners should be put in the shed. Thanks for saving these dogs. |
It will take a lot of extra care to bring Hairy around mentally. Thank you for taking him into your life. I hope his brother and sister have equally loving homes now. |
OMG poor Hairy. Its difficult to even make out its a dog yet alone a OES.
It is tragic that he and his brother and sister had to live in this environment. He is going to take alot of time to reassure him that he can live a normal happy life. I wish you every success in the task ahead, and can't wait to hear how is getting on in the future. Good Luck. |
You might not realize it now and I'm sure there will be days you will think..OMG what have I done, but I think you just got the best Valentines present you will every get.
Thank you for rescuing them. Brenda, Dud and Murph |
OMG, words escape me on how horrific this was for poor, sweet Hairy. I'm just sitting here crying. Thank you SO, SO, SO much for rescuing these dogs and giving them the lives any living creature deserves. |
Thank you for saving him I agree with Chris Poor sweet boy glad he is with you |
Thanks so much for having what it takes to rescue a dog in this condition. He's in capable, caring hands with you. |
Wow. That is truly disturbing where he lived. Thank you so much for rescuing him!
Seriously, how can people do that to an animal(s)? |
I can't begin to thank you for taking them out of that unimaginable situation. I will never understand how people can be so cruel to any living creature.
Bless you!! |
My stomach actually turned looking at those.
They should throw those people in the shed for a few years and see how they fair. |
I can't stop the tears - how horrific. I will keep you in my thoughts. Please keep us posted with his progress. I'd love to see current pictures too. |
OMG!! I could hardly tell there was a dog in that mess! I am so glad you rescued that poor, poor baby! Have those people been held responsible for this, or did they just get off scott free??!! PLEASE send pictures of the new and improved sheepie boy... bless his heart. He and his siblings are so lucky to have been saved from those wretched people!
Thank you!!!!!!!!!! |
omg god bless you no words i can write about those people |
OMG I've never seen anything like that and hope I never will again.... just horrific |
Oh My God! That is just horrible! Thank you for rescuing Hairy from this situation. I hope he is able to thrive with you now that he is somewhere he is loved. |
I'm full of tears at how terrible a situation this was for them. You will surely be blessed for being a provider when they obviously had none; a care-giver when they have never known care, and a true "human" when they have been treated so in-humanely.
Are all 3 dogs getting the care they need? |
I keep looking at the pictures...they are just horrifying. Do you work with a certain rescue group? |
Like Jill, my stomach flipped when I saw this. My husband and I are both in shock that this kind of thing happens.
Bless you for taking this poor baby. PLEASE let us know how he is doing. |
What an outrage!! No living thing should be treated so poorly. Like the others I hope the owner was prosecuted for this unimaginable cruelty. I don't know how they lived or even breathed in that filth locked up in a shed. THANK YOU for taking this poor dog in to offer him the best life possible. |
Totally speechless! Those pictures truly made my heart hurt! That is possibly the WORST I have ever seen. Thank you for your caring and willingness to take that poor baby! Those people should rot in that shed! |

I agree totally |
To start this follow up on my original post, THANK YOU to all who expressed their feelings about Hairy. Seems like everyone had the same
reaction I had when they brought him to the lobby for me to bring him home. Except I started to cry. There were many people involved in getting Hairy and his siblings. ( male is Fozzie,& female is Matty More on them later.) The first was the animal control officer who took them away immediately. Then Donna, trainer at the Humane Society, to teach them to walk on a leash. Donna called me about Hairy and we agreed to get him right away. Fozzie the other male was adopted by a family with another dog who is teaching Fozzie what the good life is. Matty, was adopted by a young lady attending Ohio State Vet school. Matty goes to school with her everyday and is learning to be a well behavied lady Hairy is still scared of everything, but il learning that life with 17 other Sheepies is not to bad. Hairy is NOT motivated by food, but when my wife gets the cheese out to give pills, Hairy is right there. More of Hairy's Tails later |
My heart just breaks for these guys. Good luck Harry! |
What a blessing that you and the others saved these poor babies from that horrific life. I am shocked by those photos - I would never have guessed that was a dog if you hadn't told us first. I have tears in my eyes. PLEASE keep us posted on Hairy's progress. He (and the others) deserve a good life!!!!! |
I have no words to describe how awful those pictures are. Thank you so much for rescuing him. He is a lucky dog to get the heck out of there. |
This is how I found my first OES...not in a shed but lived a year outside in Anchorage AK...my husband didn't want a dog because of being in military and moving...my kids were 3 and 5...everyone was gone that week I met Callie...I took her and had her shaved and cleaned and spent a week to make sure she would be alright with my children...everyone came home to the most loving OES...she had no problems with coming inside...was housebroken immediately, loved being inside and with people. She completed our family and was my velcro sheepie as she associated me as being the one that changed her life. The reward was all mine and of course my girls grew up with her love. Listening to all the issues OES have behavior wise surprises me as my Callie never had any. So glad you saved this baby...hoping you have the many years of joy and love my Callie brought my family! |
I've shown the pictures of this poorly mistreated dog to a few people - it is the most heartbreaking picture I've ever seen with the excception of the one Nita rescued with the bad mats. but the idea of living in a feces-filled dark stink bomb shed for 2 years is beyond the imagination. Can you tell us if the perpetrator was prosecuted for animal cruelty and to the fullest extent of the law? Again, thank you for saving this needy dog. |
Sounds like these pups are going to have the good life after living in such squaller. Thanks again but BUT do you have updated pics of the clean and shaven hairy??? Would love to see the big improvements. |
I was on the verge of vomiting seeing those pictures.
Speaking of pictures,I could barely make out what the pictures were. How horiffic! I truly hope whoever bestowed this type of life on an animal gets what they deserve, and to the people who rescued these babies, I hope you get rewarded, in life, what you deserve. So very very happy they are in a better place and can be a fun loving dog! Robin |
I have a couple of pictures of Hairy that his owner/foster sent me. I am just waiting approval. I know everyone is dying to see him. |
Here is Hairy.
Sure does my heart good to see this lovely boy. |
Awww, lucky boy. So nice to see him out on grass in the sun.
I have never seen a sheepie with a trimmed off tail before. That long, skinny tail put a smile on my face. |
What a handsome dog! THANK YOU for updating us on Hairy's new life. He has to feel so much better. Do you know the reason the owners locked 3 dogs in a lawn shed for 2 years - I do not know how they survived the heat and stink and bacteria.
Again, thank you and thank you to the rescuer. |
Oh, just LOOK at that happy face!:hearts: It always amazes me how these dogs can still be happy after going thru the torture that was their life.
Hairy is a beautiful boy! Can't wait to hear how he continues to adjust and hopefully his new furever home will join our forum and keep us updated on that lucky boy! |
WOW!!! Thanks so much for posting follow-up pictures. Hairy is such a cutie ! |
I haven't been online much of late, and I'm reading this for the first time, and crying.
Thank you so much for rescuing Hairy. You truly saved a life, and changed everything. What a beautiful boy. I volunteer to buy a nice shiny new lock for that shed once the horrible people who did this to this sweet boy have been tossed inside. I hope karma gets them. |
Awwwww!! It is so nice to see Hairy clean and happy!! Thanks so much for the update--and thank you for rescuing this beautiful boy!! |
YAY hairy you are a handsome guy!!!! |
He looks so very happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a God! What a miracle! Made my year, thank you for posting his pictures. He is a handsome boy. He deserves, a warm, wonderful, forever home. Thank you,Thank you. Robin |
I hadn't seen this thread until now. I couldn't believe it that there was a dog in there. He is very cute now and looks so much better! |

Wow! His skin is in amazingly good shape under that mess. We got three pelted messes in a couple of weeks ago and were expecting the worst when they were shaved down, but they too were in surprisingly good shape underneath the disaster. Amazing! He must feel so incredibly relieved. Kristine |
Like the others, I couldn't control the tears after reading this and looking at those pictures. How could anyone be so neglectful. I was so glad to see his after pictures, Hairy sure is a very handsome boy. |
Hairy is ADORABLE!!! I knew there was a cute sheepie under all that matted mess! |
Jancyp wrote: I was so glad to see his after pictures, Hairy sure is a very handsome boy.
He sure is! What great markings; he's got that "I'm an Sheepdog and there's no one that could possibly deny it!" look going on. Gorgeous white head with the white going down his front legs. Please keep sending us progress updates with photos; I'm looking forward to hearing all about this lucky guy's new life. |
I have been forward to these photos since I saw the original photos.
Hes got such a lovely face, and he looks so happy despite of what he has gone through. Congraulations to you, can't wait for the next photos. |
He is certainly saying
"Life is Good" (now) |
I would like to Thank everyone who has expressed concern and
thoughts for Hairy I read each and eveyone of the posts to him. We do see positive change as each day goes by. Still having a hard time getting use to that big tail sticking up in the air and wildly going back and forth. NOW for the what is he doing now! ? Hairy Has learned how to go out the back door onto the deck, He then learn it is okay to go down the steps into the back yard (This took 10 weeks) Unfortunately, for what ever reason, he digs in the dirt next to the tree by the deck. Sooo, now when I call everyone, here comes Hairy with the muddest, dirtist nose of all Sheepies. Tail wagging and a look of WHAT? This obviously results in an identity change to DIRTY HAIRY! Pictures of same will follow next time he strikes. |
Tonks and Luna would like you to make sure you read this to Hairy:
Dearest pal Harry... (no Tonks, its Hairy, like in shaggy, not Harry as in Harry Potter) {Luna, SHHH!} We have a good dirty hole that gets filled with water when it rains and is lots of fun to play in. If your mommy will bring you over, we will share it with you. Lots of sheepie kisses; Tonks and Luna (Tonks, you should sign it Dirty Tonks and Luna, its a better joke!) {Luna, SHHHH!} |
This is also my first time reading this post, I was sickened by the first pictures of that poor baby I could not even tell it was a dog God bless you for taking this poor baby in and loving him He looks so beautiful now, and happy |
Tggy here, sorry to highjack the post couldnt resist.
Dear Dirty, Hairy, Harry ummm I think, and Tonks and Luna, you should all fly over here to Upside Down land where sheepies rule this year (ask Syd and Babs) and I will let you share my own special places that have fox smells and dog poop to roll in. Dirt is good but I cant get the perfume to linger the way a nice bit of poop or fox smell does. Hairy, your tail will fit right in here. I find mine is very useful, I have grow'd the hair on it nice and long and it is real good for knocking over glasses and sweeping the paperwork on the coffee table. I try to be a good and helpful dog by keeping the coffee table all neat and dust free but sadly I am under appreciated in the house work department. Sigh such is a sheepies life. I also quite like to wave my tail high over my back like a nice hairy flag whenever I am feeling especially happy with myself and the world, not sure why but it just makes the sun seem brighter, the sky bluer and the grass greener. Hoping you can all visit soon. Love Tiggy |
