too early to shave

If anyone is on here right now.....Is it too early to shave? Live in VA. some warmer days, still some pretty cool nights. Some 30's and 40's still. Getting ready to board for a week, matting like crazy. Someone told my husband that I should wait until later may. Help

Is he living outdoors? I just shaved Bumble and Darby down today and we live in Michigan. Bumble's a hot blooded boy and is often panting. He is so much more comfortable. I used a #5 blade on his body and scissors on his legs and head. Still in a quandary as to the proper way to trim a beard so he's Bumble Big Head for now
No she is indoor most of the time except for long walks and playing outside in yard when we are there with her. (We live in a townhouse) I have a 7 & 10 blade and a 10 comb. I was told to sue the 10 blade with the 10 comb. Would I need to put any kind of coat on for walks right now?
You can shave anytime, year 'round. I'd use the #7 blade. It will get under any mats but still leave a bit of hair...more than a #10 blade. I only use the #10 blade on private parts & in between the pads of the feet. I live in Ohio & my dogs never wear a coat out when shaved even in the cold of winter here.
I'm not familiar with a 10 comb so I don't know how long the hair will be. I've used a #10 blade with snap on combs before... mine are labeled in inches- 1/8", 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1 1/4".

Note that with most comb attachments, you need to remove all mats/snarls before shaving down the dog. It's not like using just a #10 or #7 blade where it easily cuts through most everything. I go against the grain when using a snap on comb because it lifts the hair as I cut. If you come to a snarl or mat, you need to feed it between two teeth of the comb in order to cut through it. At least this is the way it is with my combs. The general rule is if you use the clippers going in the same direct as the hair growth it will leave hair longer than going against the grain.

As for whether she'll need a coat, I think it really depends on the weather the days you walk and the individual dog... how sensitive she is to the cold. My dogs are getting too warm and our temps have been in the 30s to 60s range.

I wanted to add that we too clip our dogs down year 'round like Marilyn. Mine love shorter hair. http://oesusa.com/BumblesSpringtimeHairdo.jpg
