I just found out my parent's new male doggy got neautured yesterday and today his "ho hos" are black and swollen. They took him to the vet right away, I was just wondering if any of you knew or heard anything about this? Thanks. |

I'm a little confused since I thought the object of neutering was to remove his ho hos, but perhaps it's my lack of anatomical ho ho knowledge getting in the way...? Was the swelling and discoloration related to bleeding perhaps? Kristine |
Yes, the blood under the skin is a hematoma, and it will look black and nasty. It needed to be drained off and remove the pressure. It does happen - not often, but it's not rare either. There was a bleeder that wasn't fully sealed/cauterized during the surgery and leaked into the scrotum - gravity.
It happens with human surgery as well. |
I think I'll be switching to Ring Dings, or perhaps Devil Dogs. |
You can do warm compresses to help the swelling go down, to. We had a rescue with a similar reaction. |
Hey there,
Thanks for your reply. I found out I guess this was normal and I meant by ho hos was were he got neutured, sorry I didn't know what to call it! : ) But I guess my dad asked the receptionist and she said it wasn't good, and the vet said it was normal and everything is ok. So everything turned out ok. Thanks a lot. |
If the neutered guy's name was Santa, would that have been Ho, Ho, Ho's? Just wondering. |
Haha! Maybe! That's funny. It's funny my Mom called them that in the first place and I just cracked up, but I think it describes them good! Thank you all for your advice. Have a good day! |

I believe - don't censure me - the vet told Dan he had what they call "blue balls" Actually out here vets no longer remove the Ho Ho's they sever them from the connective tissue and then are absorbed back into the body? Probably why they want to do the procedure at such a young age - regardless of the true health issues to the dogs. |
