Need advice on neglected OES

My in-laws have a OES that stays outside 24/7, they have 3 other dogs they let come in the house so she is always outside by herself. They say that she pees when she gets excited, but they haven't talked to the vet about options for helping her with that. They don't really groom her or anything and I feel really bad for her becuase to me that is no life for a dog or any animal for that matter. My husband and I don't really know anything about the breed but we are thinking about asking his parents if we could take her. We have 2 chihuahuas ages 5 1/2 (male) and 3 (female), our house is about 1600 sq ft and we have no children yet but are working on it. We have a huge backyard with stockade fence, my husband is always gone for work and I am a student but only gone from about 7:45am-12/1pm each day. I am just looking for some advice in this situation cause I don't really know what to do or if our home would even be the best for her. I hope you guys can give me some good advice!!

Thanks :)[/quote]

Maybe you could take her on a trial period and
if it doesn't work you can place her with a
rescue group in your area.
(just a thought)
Where are you located??
We live in Springfield Missouri
You can find the national oes rescue list at
http://www.oes.org/html/oes_rescue.shtml

Do you think they would be willing to give her up?
Is she regularly vetted?
How old is she?
I hope you can help the girl. That's no way for a dog to live. Sheepdogs are very social animals, they need to be with their pack, their family. The constant interaction between dog and human or dog and dog makes their life enjoyable. Keeping her in short coat will keep her comfortable and reduce chances of serious skin problems since the uprights don't care for her.

You being home half a day is fine. Just remember she'll need walking daily......broaden her mental outlook and help you bond with her.

Thank you so much for caring enough to post on this site. The fact that you posted says a lot about you! I will have to echo what Donner's Mom said, try it, see if taking her works out, and if it doesn't there are rescue organizations that would be happy to take her and place her in a caring and loving home. I agree, staying tied up outside is no way for her to be treated. An OES is just an oversized lap dog, so the neglect must be hard on her.

Please let us know how it is going, and ask questions!
As lots have said thank you for careing.

You have enough room. We have about the same size as you and we have 3 OES.
Trial is great because you know that if you can't handle it you do have a out that is ok.

Please let us know what happens.
All of ours are in a puppy cut
Thank you guys for your support and advice!!

She is current on shots but she gets car sick and I saw her this past weekend and she has not been to a groomer in a long time. She is 2 years old and we are not sure if they will give her to us. His parents are kind of weird about stuff, but I think we are going to give it a try. I talked to my husband some more and he said he thinks it would be a good idea to bring her here with us. It just really broke my heart this past weekend when we were visiting and it had rained and her coat was all muddy and she was snuggled up next to their hot tub outside :( ... I will keep you posted. :D
Good Luck...for her travel you can give her dramamine or benadryl to
ease the naseau a touch.
Ask your vet for the dosage it is over the counter!
Thank you for caring about that sweetie :hearts:
   I am praying they let you take her.
Thank you for caring about this girl. It sounds like you have plenty of space. When we got our first oes we had a very small apartment. He was happy and just fine--we made sure he got plenty of exercise and took him most everywhere we went when we could. He loved his life and the space was fine--because when he was inside he was always right where we were so a bigger space would not have mattered anyway.

Hope this works out for you and especially her--living outside when everyone else is inside must be very lonely for her. With consistent attention and some patience I think you will find that she is housebroken in no time.
I hope this all works out for you both. Maybe to stay on speaking terms with your inlaws, you could ask to 'borrow' the dog so you could see if it would work out if you bought one of your own? After that it's in your hands. My inlaws are the same.
 I really really hope she can live with you :plead:
Ok, well we talked to his parents and they said that they like having her in the backyard to scare anyone away that might come there. They live out in the country though on 10 acres ... I don't get it. Wow, I am really sad right now :( I don't think it is right for her to be there.
Oh how sad for her. :(

Thank you for caring about her. If they won't let you take her, will they at least let you get her groomed? Maybe take her for a walk or an outing somewhere that you can spend time with her. She needs someone to pay attention to her and interact with her. Does she have any shelter where she can get in out of the rain or bad weather?

Poor baby. This breaks my heart. :(
Well we live 6 hours away .. that's why we were just going to see if we could have her. They don't have a dog house for her but they have a covered porch that she gets under ... it's just makes me sad. During the winter and stuff she will sit at the back door and put her eye up against the glass where her hair can be pulled out of the way and looks in at everyone. They laugh about it but to me that is mean and hurtful :( ... i'm sorry I am just getting really upset now.
That is just horribly sad. She so wants to be a part of their lives. Can you try again-I know it is a difficult situation for you. I know what I would do, but I will not recommend it  ...
Many of the forum members have rescue dogs and every dog has a sad story to tell, I hope you get to take the bitch as she will be thankful to you the rest of her life.

It is no life for an OES living outside 24/7 and they love being with their uprights, best of luck and please keep us posted of your progress.
This might sound drastic but could you call call the humane society anonymously and report a neglected dog? You obviously care about the situation and she would have a wonderful life with you. Best of luck, it's a tough position to be in.
My thoughts exactly. If she's left out doors in rain & muck I will will put money on her being matted. This is not the life for for her. Maybe they could get an alarm system. Although not in a high crime area, it works well for us. Look up the number for their local SPCA.
