Calcium

I met a woman in my neighborhood who used to breed and show OES. She recommened that I give Sam a calcium suppliment stating that she is a large breed with big bones. It makes sense, as humans need calcium for healthy bones also. So, does anyone give their dogs calcium and how much? Thanks!

Greetings-
The calcium supplement sounds like good advise.
As you may know, Nutro makes a large breed formula
which is formulated for large breed dogs. I just spoke
with their rep who was at our local pet store.

As our fellow is doing well on Nutro LB puppy, we are going to
transition to Nutro LB Adult formula in a month.
I mention Nutro because I believe you stated in another post
you are currently using their lamb and rice formula product.

There are also other companies which make a Large Breed formula.
Their is actually research that suggests to much calcium may have the reverse affect for instance if you take your large breed off its high protien puppie diet to soon. When they switch to the adult lower protien diet they get to much of the nutrients because of the higher volume of food consumed http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/intro.htm from the canine inherited disorders database. Also go to the Pennhip website http://www.pennhip.org/ and a decent study was done at the University of Helsinki http://ethesis.helsinki.fi/julkaisut/ma ... eeding.pdf
In the end the correct amount of food with the right protein and nutrient levels are critical to circulatory, bone, joint, eye, etc development. To much or to little can cause problems. Every animal is different but here is my philosophy I feed them what I think is the best food. at the reccomended amounts, adjusting for the individual dog. I also give them a couple spoons of cottage cheese per week ( a suggestion from carl Lindon, if I got it right) I also give them a few bites of fruit and a little meat like 1/2 plain chicken breast per week. I personally am afraid of nutrient suppliments that are for bone, eye, circulatory & joint conditions. I currently have not read if their are drawbacks to nutrient suppliments for the coat.

The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its
limits.
From Rogers Dad
I agree with Rogers Dad, I like to keep things natural, if they are on a good quality food there should be no need for supplements. Too much calcium can be dangerous too.
