Question about odor

Hi everyone,I have a question, maybe a little strange. Today at the show we were grooming Jazzy with Mandy, and I had the rear end brushing it. I started smelling a strong odor of fish !!! I give Jazz little salmon treats at handling class and at shows just a few not alot. It finally dawned on me it smelled exactly like the Salmon treats 8O I had cleaned his butt, there were no traces of dingleberries, it was totally clean. He had not farted, it was just an odor of salmon on his nice clean butt. So my question is, Can a dog carry an odor from something he has eaten? I am not talking about passing gas after he has eaten. It was the strangest thing, I am still puzzled by it 8O The only thing I can compare to is someone who has eaten garlic and it seeps through their pores and you can smell it on their body. Anyone else experience this?

Could it be his anal glands? Do they need to be "cleaned" ?

sure Kerry - watch tv and type at the same time - if you are interested in a translation:

When my girl gets scared, she expresses her anal glands and that is what it smells like - sometimes she does it when I am grooming her. They are related - maybe its a familial response to unwanted attention :D
Yuck. That's totally the anal gland smell. Worst smell ever.
I'm thinking anal glads as well...........every so often "the smell" wafts thru the air......I'd almost prefer a good old fashion .........dog fart.

   Agree farts smell way better then the anal glands. :twitch:

Hi Lori sometimes when they are overexcited they can express a little bit from the Anal Glands. Does not mean they are impacted or anything or need squeezing but from what you described "Fishy" I am pretty sure Jazz released a little. :?

No powder on the butt can remove the smell. :? Brie did that as a youngster at dog shows due to over excitement, she grew out of it thank goodness. 8)

Keep an eye on Jazz and if any trying to scoot, lick or try to get at the butt area etc then you may need them emptied. Otherwise just leave them alone and hope that it wont happen again at a show after being bubbled bathed, groomed and all smelling sweet till jazz secreted. :P 8)
^^

Nature's miracle will help with the smell
Yuki has this problem and we fall under the category of absolutely no need for expression or anything although they always expect this first. So, we just have to deal with the occasional potpourri. I feel for ya!!!!!!!!!

You mean there is something worse than SBDs <silent but deadlies>?? 8O 8O 8O

Praying none of mine read this thread :plead: Liz can clear a room as it is :P

Kerry - what do you do? Wash their bum with nature's miracle, or...?

Kristine
It's the anal glands. If it happens here, I put the back half of the dog in the tub and wash them down with mild soap and water but mine are in a shorter coat. I express the glands of dogs that tend not to empty naturally when they poop. Some dogs require this help, many don't. Expressing them keeps the dog comfortable (stops any crazy licking and scooting) and keeps the furniture clean too.

You might also keep a bottle of A-O-E on hand. This stuff works great. It's a professional strength Animal Order Eliminator designed specifically to eliminate glandular secretion ordors. It doesn't just cover the odor with a perfume.

If I can't wash her butt - like she did it right before bed (eeew) or we are out somewhere - a few spritz of Nature's miracle will help with the residual smell.

I have to say - I find it easier to live with than the awful farts they used to get on kibble - and that someone still gets from biscuits - just not sure who is doing it - yet!

YEP when there impacted and need squeezing cause there choka block full EEEEWWWWW. :P Had it done once with brie as a puppy and was VERY VERY happy to let the vet do it, he earned his money that day as I cleared the room and left him to do the pongy deed, then drove 45 minutes home with all the windows of the car OPEN till I could wash her butt at home. 8) Where's a gas mask when you need one

Give me SBD's any day after that :P Air freshner can make the room smell better so much quicker
Didn't someone have a special cleaner.....not Nature's Miracle.....but something the vet uses for cleaning up this........nasty smell when it gets on the hair? Of course I forgot to order some.
I got the A-O-E from my vet.
Honest, it's amazing stuff 8)
Thanks for all the suggestions :!: At least I know there is a solution, and I think I will try chicken treats from now on
