Hello from Manitoba

We have a 1yr old lab and a cat that we adpoted from a local rescue agency. We'd had our cat about 7 months & our lab was coming up on his first birthday so we thought maybe we would foster a dog - great for socialization, wearing off some of the lab's energy & a great life learning experience for our daughter. So we were checking out the website for animals looking for foster homes as well as those up for adoption. My husband had been at a couples home who had 3 adult OES a few weeks earlier & had told me how great they were. So when he saw one up for adoption he said we had to consider adopting him! So much for fostering.

In addition to him being a breed we were unfimilar with, he is also deaf so we put quite a bit of thought & research into this decision. Between first being interested in adopting Duffie to when we actually brought him home we had about 4 weeks of research as well as 3 visits with him. We wanted to be sure our lab as well as our daughter were compatiable with Duff as he had already be adopted out & returned once and we didn't want to cause any extra upheaval in his life. We spent alot of time at deafdogs.org as well as oes.org! I checked a couple local groomers for pricing & anyother info they would share.

We had friends who thought what's the big deal, just get the dog & deal with whatever comes up. IMO between that opinion & puppy mills, that is why there are so many animals in shelters.

Nuff said - we couldn't be happier with Duffie! His personality appears to be "typical" of the breed. But we still have questions that are best answered buy other OES owners so I've finally registerd & will be posting as I need help! (and I'll try not to be so long winded)

Welcome from Melbourne, Aust.
I believe you are right, it is so important to research first rather than regret latter.
