SHAVING HELP

I am seriously considering shaving my OES for the first time. 16 months old and matting like crazy. I think I am losing the battle. I am just terrified to go near her with clippers, fearing how she will turn out. But no OES groomers in the area that I know of. Does anyone on here know of any instructional sites for this? There have been several postings for brushing and such. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. I think she might even be close to being done with this transition stage (?), based on what I have read. The shedding has seemed to slow down considerably and she is almost all the real light gray in color now. [/img]

Are you in the uk?
I'm sure there are lots of people who can advise on keeping a full coat but IF you don't mind going super short you won't need to find any special groomers to do this and doing it yourself doesn't require a lot of skill.

We've shaved Casey down twice now. When we first got him we took him some place to have it done and they shaved him with #10, it grew back nicely and was almost back to a full coat in about 6 months. The second time we did it ourselves and his fur looked like it lost a battle with a paper shredder but we learned ALOT about what not to do so we'll just tack it down to lessons learned.

I really like how Casey looked in a full coat but he looks very handsome with short hair too and I love the easy care aspect of his short coat and it looks good in all the stages as it grew back. We will probably keep shaving him down and growing it back with the seasons...short for spring and late summer so he has a good amount of protection from the sun in the summer and the cold in the winter.
We are in Virginia. I am wanting to do it myself. I am just not sure the right way to do it, where to begin and things like that. Are the clippers used on the head (face, ears muzzle, ect) as well?
Here's what I'd suggest from my limited dog shaving experience (but I have good mentors for advice!):

1. Get a good pair of clippers-- none of the $50 cheapos. It'll cost you more in the long run. Try something like these (I have them and like them a lot):

Andis AGRC Power Groom Clipper

2. If you want to leave some hair on the dog, get a blade like the #3 3/4 or the #7. If you use the 3 3/4, you'll have to get as many mats out as you can. Anything that you can't get out, you can use the #7 to shave off. A #10 will take you right to the skin. One perk that I've found to leaving some hair is that it's easier to not give the dog razor burn. As you shave, the blades get hot so either buy two of the same blade so you can switch or have blade coolant on hand.

4. When you shave, go with the direction of hair growth.

5. Give the dog a bath to get all the loose hair off and to see what you've missed.

6. Shave again.

I give another bath after that, too, just so he isn't itchy. I have no method to shaving because I haven't done enough dogs to really have a system going. I just start at the top and work my way down and around. I scissor the feet because it's tough with the clippers to get it all nice and smooth.

I'm not a pro but that was the advice that was given to me and it's worked out very well. Good luck!

Although I can't vouch for doing a shave myself, our groomer has never had a problem with it.

We shave Max for the warm summer months. He loves playing in the hose and anything that'll get him stinky and muddy. Being shaved makes it so easy to give him a bath at home.

If it's the first time you've shaved your OES, get ready for a surprise! I hardly recognized Max the first time we did it. I really like him shaved, though. You can get really close and personal when you're hugging and petting a shaved OES
Thank you all for your help, but more questions....We actully purchased the Oster A5 single speed in the initial beginning anticipating this moment. We have a #7 metal blade. And a # 10 blade or guard (?). It is black in color and much longer than the #7 blade. I was trying to remember back from childhood days in 4-H when we sheared the sheep, but I didn't know if it was the same process or not. Just a weird question for you all....has anyone saved the hair and had anything made?
I am still in the saving hair phase. I plan on blending it with wool and mohair and making myself a scarf and mittens! :D

I was a 4-H-er too. We also have sheep, and hopefully Todd is at home shearing today!
