eventually as he grew older.....the toilet problem got significantly improved.......... Since my boyfriend walks him once in the morning before he gets to work.....tiger gets his first meal with the bowl of water in morning around 7......they go for a walk right after for him to pee and poop...... then the second meal is around 5 or 6.....after he comes back from work, we feed him the second meal with second bowl of water.......we walk him right after........ now tiger is turning 2 in two months.....he got used to this 2 walk-2 meals-2 water routine.... i just wonder if we should start feeding him more water since his bladder control is much improved and no accidents in a loooong time..... it seems not to be too good to just give him limited water access, like twice a day....but he drinks water like a machine like he never will get enough of it...... so i'm afraid even if we do leave out water for him he will keep drinking and peeing like what he did when he was small...... i want him to be healthy and not to be thirsty all the time....but my bf is really uptight about his condo and wants no accidents to occur.....i think he does not wanna experiment at all..... so please help mi with this concern... how much water they actually need? and should we just keep the way it is right now??? or try to get him water access at all time???? thanks sooo much!!! |

Crikey!
Archie has water available all day long, he'll hold his bladder until he goes for his walk - he doesn't like stinking up his own garden. He let's us know when his bowl is empty Why not start with a few smallish extra drinks through the day and see how things progress. You can always change boyfriends |
So water is withheld from 7am to maybe 6pm? Does someone give him any water in between???
Just one opinion... it seems like too long a time to withhold water, especially during a dog's active hours. You don't want to harm him physically (or mentally- seems he could fixate on water if he's deprived of it) by purposing withholding water. I'd also worry about bloat... a big meal, lots of water and a walk). Seek professional advice... ask your vet if this method of providing water is adequate for your larger breed dog. He/she can examine your dog and advise you. |
thanks for the reply...
yeah i talked to my bf....and forwarded the replies to him... now he agrees to slowly add more water to Tiger until he can fully get water access.... thanks a lot....and I hope all OESs get a happy and healthy life!!! |
If you only offer him water hours apart that could be why he is so obsessive with it! Putting a human emotion into it....if you were on a diet and couldnt have cake doesn't that make you want it more? Have you had Tiger since he was a pup? Immaculate house and OES don't usually go hand in hand! I let my dogs play, play, play and they are a mess. I joke that I need a "clean up toolbelt" Thinking of what 6Girls said...I would worry about development and also bloat... Good luck with your man! |
today is our first day to change it up on his water intake......
thanks to the replies and changed my boyfriend's mind on it a little... we fed him the first big bowl of water with his meal in this morning... then i gave him about 150 ml around noon.....another 150 ml in the afternoon around 4............then 6:30 his dinner time....one big bowl of water and his second meal.....and then another 150ml water at night around 11:30pm.......... now his breath is not as stinky.....so i think tomorrow i will try to give him more.....hopefully eventually he will realise he has more water so he will drink less and less.....each time and most importantly....hold his bladder........ I have a good feeling about this change.....and hopefully....tiger is happy with a more hydrated life too.... We love our dog.....I don't want you all to think that he is being tortured or anything....but he was really EXTREMELY destructive when he was small.....and we are both very busy people....a small downtown condo might not be a good place to live for him...but we chose him without thinking too much at the time... now we can only do things to make this better....... and yes we got him when he was 8 weeks old from a out of town farm... he was the youngest one in the litter also the smallest one... we did not expect to bring him home that day.... but he's just too adorable.....^.^ |
My son's dog was also a water hog. And a food hog. She was a rescue, found at a cemetery.
It's taken two years of free access to water, with lots of emergency trips outside, to get her to drink what she needs and leave the rest for later. She is even doing great on camping trips, confident that water will be there when she needs it. |
