I am trying to read up more on puppies and dogs. |
|
You know, I have read many many training books. The best thing I have found though is to find a good trainer (or behaviorist)- one not totally committed to one method who can use what works with the individual dog based on their personality and needs.
I have read all of Milan's books - just to see what he has to say Control Unleashed by Leslie Mcdivitt - is perhaps my favorite BUT DIDN'T WORK FOR MY DOG Anything by Jean Donaldson or Susanne Clothier and recently recommended to me but not read yet is Susan Garret's Shaping for Success book - but they didn't recommend her Rough Love |
I have read all Milan books and Tamar Geller's The Loved Dog Book and that British lady too. Cannot remember her name. I will check out those you mentioned thanks!
We pretty much only have one trainer in town but she is great. Laika is taking agility classes with her with two other sheepdogs! Cutest class every! 3 sheepdogs. |
Oh and I gave my husband VIctoria Stillwell's book for Christmas. Wonder were that is |

The Culture Clash Bones Would Rain From the Sky: Deepening Our Relationships With Dogs Thanks for the recommendations! |

B ate it? Kristine |
I am reading the "Bones..." and I like it.
However, it is taking me forever to get through it. I don't know why, as I am a big reader and a fast reader too. |
more likely Morgan
I have the Clothier book somewhere too - haven't had a chance to read it either I loved her seminar, we were a case study (where is the really red faced icon when you need it?) I read her smaller books - real commonsense approach to things. But honestly - although I use her technique with most of my guys - it didn't work with my problem child |

The Culture Clash Bones Would Rain From the Sky: Deepening Our Relationships With Dogs Thanks for the recommendations! Two of the best books out there. Also consider adding Patricia McConnell's "The Other End of the Leash" and if you think there's any chance at all you may do performance stuff with this puppy. Bobbie Anderson's "Building Blocks for Performance" I think it's called. Kerry - I have Shaping for Success and never get more than a few chapters in. Not because it's a bad book - Susan knows her stuff. Maybe it's a time thing, as I don't have much. But if I book really grabs me I can't put it down. I've read Ruff Love. I think some rescue dogs especially could benefit. Heck, Sybil could probably benefit. But I don't have the patience for that kind of regimented program and I don't have a crate big enough for me to sleep in there with her... Donaldson, Clothier and McConnell are all must reads for anyone who truly wants to understand dogs (the book to explain Sybil has yet to be written, but anyway) and they give you an excellent frame work for being able to understand what the world looks like from a canine perspective so you can better relate to them and prevent behavioral issues, but I don't know what I'd recommend if someone ask me about a plain old good "how to raise a puppy" book. Has anyone read one they liked? Kristine |
There was one I read several (many?) years ago. Can't remember the title exactly, something about "The Weekend Dog". It was very good. I'll have to dig a bit and find out what it was exactly. |
I can't believe I forgot Donaldson!!
I read the dog whisperer before i go tthe puppies as a refresher (not Cesar Milan) I htink it was by Paul Ownes and a ghost writer. I can't recall how I felt about it though;0 I would say the clothier smaller books are good general background for relationship training for puppies |
Here is one of the first books I read.
The Dog Listener by Jan Fennell |
Oh and just so you don't overlook his performance education (stolen from another list )
There are four CR-produced DVDs applicable to foundation training -- Foundation Training for Agility Training by Moe Strenfel The Pre-Sports Puppy by Rachel Sanders** In FOCUS Beginning Obstacle Skills by Deb Jones & Judy Keller** Foundation Jumping by Susan Salo ** Those two DVD just came out. I have the Strenfel set - very useful in that much of what is taught is focus and teamwork which is useful outside of agility |

Thought I had just read those somewhere!!!! All of the above she mentioned can be found at www.cleanrun.com which also has an excellent agility magazine for people of that persuasion. Kristine |
