My little dog was bitten by a pit bull

My little dog was bitten by a pit bull. It on the way out of a park wherein my wife has walked our dog(Toto) for years. Toto was on a leash and 3 feet behind my wife when she heard Toto yelp out. The next second she saw Toto unconscious and on the ground with the dogs trying to pull him apart as they were biting him.

She yelled and shouted. She kicked them. Finally she pulled on the choker of one of them, but the other always took over when she pulled one dog off of Toto.

Somehow she got both chokers and picked up an unconscious bleeding Toto. The dogs circled her and jumped up on her until she found a kind neighbor's house and they got to safety. In the meantime, the dogs were circling the house and even tried to get through the fence to attack these neighbor's dog.

I was called by the neighbor, who told me that my wife was hysterical and that: "I think your dog is dead." Since we don't have children, Toto is our only child. I felt as if I was going to lose it.

When I got to the neighbor's house, I could see Toto unconscious with one eye wide open and bloody. My wife pleaded for me to tell her if he was dead or not. I put my ear against his nose and I heard breath.

On the way to the ER of the best dog+cat hospital, I told my wife how to do artificial respiration on Toto.

We are soo lucky now. Toto, after 1 week, is peeing eating and smiling even. He even wagged his tail this morning. He's still seeing his surgeon, tomorrow actually, and his opthamologist. He has: lascerations along his neck, eye, face, a puncture in one eye, a deep bite under his front leg (in his body). He may have some nerve damage b/c he hadn't been even able to walk at all until about yesterday (possibly due to nerve damage from that bite).

We found out that ANOTHER neighbor had been attacked by this owner's dogs. He owns THREE pit bulls. The other dog, who was attacked, is Toto's old walking friend (a good sheepdog). He has internal injuries and the owner has to constantly drain him of infection etc.

The owner refused to put his dogs down. According to the animal control officer, he showed no sorrow for what had happened or remorse. The dogs were put down anyway, the other day. One of his dogs was shot by a neighbor some years ago, and the owner bred more pits. And this owner actually has 3 small children at home.

I live in a very friendly middle class somewhat new community. There is a leash law here. This experience has opened up my eyes. The world is not a safe place for gentle dogs, imo.

I've read that here in California we can 'maybe' sue for punitive damages b/c the owner showed grose negligence. BUT, I somewhat fear that the owner may well be much crazier than his dogs were. I am conflicted as to whether or not to have our lawyer go all out. We may just sue/ask for medical bills.

The animal control officer said that mace and/or a stun gun would have done no good. He "DID" suggest "a weapon" for when we walk Toto in the future. And a friend told me that a "buck knife," in the ear or sliced across the thoat, would deter a pit bull. Only that, he said.

Thanks for hearing me and for being there. I know you all understand the trauma we've gone through this past week and how lucky we've been as well.

PS my wife is only 5' tall and 115 lbs @56 years old. I'm so proud of her.

Oh my god, I am so sorry for what you've been put through. I hope Toto is going to be okay and I wish you and your wife the best of luck in dealing with this tragedy. :(
What a horrible story. I hope Toto pulls through.

With regards to Pit Bulls - please find it in your heart to not vilify the breed. I am convinced that they have gotten a bad rap because some owners breed and teach the dogs to be vicious. I have known many pits and they are loving, caring dogs. It's just that god has given them incredible strength. A trait that some abuse.
wow!!your wife is amazing.i myself am not a fan of the pit bulls due to alot of trauma when i was a kid and even now,yes there are many good pits who are very loveable however we dont hear about those on the news.i remember a while back a lady in Cali was killed in her apartment building from a pit attacking her, anyone remember her?
David I would sue the pants off those ppl, they are very irrisondsible ppl have no business w/ a powerful animal like a pit.Get your medical billa paid at the very least. My neighbor where i just moved has 3pits and they are so ignorante due to the way they open the front the door and let them dump where ever the dogs want to.being right next door where do they go?My front yard how lovely,so I have called the police 2times and thats after me going over there asking them to please pick up after their dogs,I have 3dogs and they go in MY back yard, ppl so easily make their issues become everyone elses issues and its time for all of us to show these ppl they will have to pay(i got that from the police officer)hehe!!3yrs ago my daughter and her friend was chased by a pit,let my daughter shaking and very scared the stupid dog chased her right into her house the dog bounced off my front door,so I called animal control and come to find out this dog had attacked some kids and left them in the hospital that pit was put down thank goodness. So david make these ppl pay for what they have done and go sue them for your medical bills atleast.
Your wife showed incredible courage in getting Toto away from those dogs. I hope that he recovers quickly and is back home soon.

And I can understand why you are being cautious with regards to suing the owner of the dogs. It is difficult to deal with a person who doesn't take resposibility for his dogs actions. However, I would certainly ask for compensation for Toto's medical bills.

Good luck.

Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia and Sharkey
A cheer to Toto's Mom!!!! That really took courage!

Danita and I hope Toto gets better soon. I would agree that you must ask for (At least) compensation for your medical bills and an evaluation of the dogs. I'm not in favor of putting dogs down, but our pet's and families safety is first, and dangerous dogs are not meant to be let loose. Hoepfully you'll make these people get what they deserve.

We wish Toto a speedy recovery!
I would definitly sue that looney! Honestly - I think he should be arrested if he is allowing them to roam around and attack people...

I hope no one gets offended by this... but what a <horrible person>

Poor little Toto... :(
David,

How's Toto doing? Hope he's better. I was telling Danita how sorry I felt for him... That pit bull guy is lucky all the forum members don't live on the same city, or we'd be in front of his house with sticks, stones and torches by now.
I feel for what you went thru. But as a pit bull fan and a pit bull owner I must say a few things.

1) it is not the dogs fault they were bred this way. THis is what they were bred to do. To kill a pit bull for attacking another animal is like killing a sheepie for herding livestock. Its just not fair to the dog.

2) Animal aggression is no way turned or related to human aggression. There is no relation at all. I have a wonderful 40 pound pit bull that LOVES people, would kill another animal in a minute. But she LOVES my kids and LOVES people. We keep her under lock and key so things like this dont happen.

3) Pit bulls are sought after by horrible stupid people. But its not their fault.

PIT BULLS ARE GREAT DOGS!

Pit bulls have a bad reputation, but it is at least partially deserved, IMHO. They have been bred to have certain characteristics, and the result is a very large and extremely powerful animal, and when they bite, which may or may not be as often as other breeds, they don't just bite and release and walk away.

This is the reason, again IMHO, that they are completely unsuitable as pets; who knows what can happen to trigger an animal to bite. A very large percentage of dogs bite someone at sometime. When a pit bull does it, very frequently it is a disaster rather than an incident.

In my own experience, I had to call Emergency Services from my work 35 miles from home, to break down my door and get a family member to the hospital. My sheepdog didn't kill the volunteer fireman/EMT who came through the door, nor did he slow their access to my sick family member.

(Yes, I warned the dispatch that my 106 pound sheepdog was in the house. They asked "Does he bite?" I said "Not usually, but then again, nobody has ever broken down the door to get into my house before." When I came home, Jake had been placed in the garage.)

But hey, this is only my opinion, and I know that lots of people have a differing one, and I wouldn't want to stop someone from getting a pit bull as their family pet. But let's all understand that compared to a Pomeranian, the risk of death or disfigurement from a pit bull is greater. The same holds true for sheepdogs - the risk of a sheepie seriously injuring a human is a lot higher than for a Chihuahua.

My Homeowners and Liability insurance companies have no problem with Sheepdogs, but will ask me to take my business elsewhere if I tell them I have a pit bull or certain other breeds.

OES could very well be on this "other breeds" list one day if we aren't careful!

It's not only the "breed" - it's the breeder and owners that are the problem!

I hear all the time from the Vet and the Groomers that they have at least one OES in their practice that is aggressive!

The more and more we buy from puppy mills, commercial breeders, BYBs, etc. - the worse the situation is going to get.

JMHO.

I have had more than my fair share of run-ins with pit bulls. A city about 30-45 minutes away has banned them in the whole city. We have built 2 fences for the one pit that lives behind us, and to our shock and horror they got 2 more and our breeding. From us calling after he attacked Jack, the owner now has to have the dog on a chain in the backyard because he can break through 2 fences when the mood strikes him. Fortunately, the females aren't as strong, or at least I have never seen them break through like the male does.
I hate to label a breed of dog as dangerous, but IMO they are and I would never have one.

Stormi and co.
Well I did watch that video piece and I have seen it a million times.Just watch Animal Cops on animal planet, youll see pit bulls beaten up,scars, starved, tied down w/ HUGE chains, and looking into their eyes I can see NO love,b/c they never knew love.No breed should ever undergo any torture for the game of money its morally wrong, and just overall wrong.I dont hate pitbulls I dont hate any breeds,I have more of a fear of them, having one chase my 5yr old into our house bouncing off the door, scared the crap out of my daughter and now another generation who has fear of pitbulls. What if that pit had caught her?Thank God ill know that answer.Growing up in miami Florida I saw so many pits being stolen for fights right out of their loveing home, now yrs later it is a federal offence to train a pit,and or to steal a pit,and turn it into a fighting machine. Its sad there are actually some towns/cities that it is illegal to own a pit that should tell us all how bad this has gotten.Again Id like to say No breed of dog should be put through so much aweful happenings like the pit it is disgusting and hopefully one day it will come to an end.
So should OES's be banned since some of you here have said they are not good with children? Do you know that most of the so called pit bull bites are actually mixes labeled pits?

This is proof positive, find the pit bull(s) in this game it is interesting.

Pitbulls are banned here now. I don't agree with it. I guess it's a lot like gun control. Do guns kill people or do people kill people? I think pitbulls and some other breeds DO inherently have aggressive tendencies, it would be naive to think otherwise, they were bred for it. However if it is raised properly, loved, cared for, trained , and supervised, as any dog should be, then it shouldn't be much different other than perhaps only an experienced owner should have those breeds, or someone with a mentor readily available to supervise the dogs' upbringing.
I saw a pitbull pup walking with it's owner downtown a few weeks ago, and the look of love and adoration on that pups face as it looked up to it's owner, happily walking along bouncing and tail wagging, it was a sweet scene.
[I think that] Pit bulls only purpose is to kill other dogs or people. Your wife and dog are very lucky to be alive.

[I believe that a] pit bull will attack without ANY warning. One attacked my wire fox and I had to kill the pit bull to get it off my dog.

[I think that] Pit bulls should be outlawed completely and you pit bull owners are [, in my opinion making a mistake] if you think your families are safe.
Hi All,

I just wanna say again how thankful I am that we're able to discuss very emotional things without becoming disagreeable.

Greg, while I appreciate your passion for the subject, we usually try to be a little more tactful in our posts! Thanks for understanding why I edited your post a little bit.
hehe!!i love it when Ron edits.hehe!!
