For the last week or so, Barney's been leaving a nugget here and there. He's not pooping in the house. One just seems to escape. Of course he's left nuggets in the past, but this has been happening almost every day for the past week or so, which isn't typical. Nothing new in his life...everything else seems fine (and the nuggets are firm) Any ideas? It's just the one nugget at a time... |

Steph I dont know if this relates to barney but when Kelseys back end was weak we had that problem. We found the odd gum nut (Nugget) dropped in the house. Especially if she had been asleep and when she got up ooops out popped one.
At least it was a small firmy rather then a messy one. Just wondering with Barney and his back end (hips) wether that might be the reason it is happening? They seem to loose a bit of muscle control so out pops a small unexpected surprise in the house. |
How old is Barney? |
Lisa, that is very interesting. He does seem a bit weak back there. We took him for a nice and easy but short walk the other day and he kept up just fine, but he seemed to be limping starting about halfway through. But other than that seemed totally fine. I don't think he's in pain or anything, though, although I guess it could be hard to tell.
Barney is 4 1/2. |
Good observation, Lisa. I had an older fellow here as a foster and he had the same issue. His back end was weak as well. |
That's too early for problems unless he has bad hips or a spinal problem. I assume his exit port/poop shoot is clear. Anal sac compaction? Have you changed his food?
The only time we've had it here was when doggie going weak in the rear and lost feeling back there..... I'd mention it to the vet, are you giving him an preventatives for his hips like glucosamine? |
Susan--he does have bad hips...because he's so young they aren't bad yet, but they'll get there soon enough And he's given glucosamine daily.
No changes at all, and all's clear back there, etc. I don't like hearing that weakness is often a reason for nuggets |
Steph exersising him on soft surfaces like a grassy area to walk him or freeplay on a grass surface to help not impact on his hips or even somewhere to swim him which is great too and low impact on them, will help tone/plump/condition up the muscles again & shoud help him. Due to backend weakness and not able to be so active as they were they loose muscle tone it shrinks down and adds to the weakness of the backend.
I would start him with choosing a grassy area like a park or sports oval with just a short gentle lead walk then gradually increasing that walk in distance and time. Start with just a 10 minute one then see how he is and after a couple of days increase the distance and add another 5-10 mins to the walk. Taking it slowly to see if he pulls up OK after an exercise session. being only 4 if you can get him a bit fitter, not too much weight on him also with slowly progressing to building some more condition/firmness in the muscles on his rear it will be beneficial to him in the longer term with not only the hips but the controll with the bowel as well. |
Max has the same problem, and, he is weak in the back area. Our vet says he doesn't even know he's dropping the "golden nuggets"
We were at the groomers one day, and, he was laying on the floor while I was talking to someone. All of a sudden, whew-- one popped out. I swear he turned his head around, looked at his art work, and looked up at me as if to say "Did I do that". Good luck with Barney. |
Drez did the same thing the last year. Her hips were horribly bad, and only moderately better after an FHO. She would be walking outside and one would just pop out - no stooping or anything. I'm convinced she didn't even feel it. |
Yeah, that's exactly what it is--like he doesn't even know it happened.
Oh my. Sounds like I have some work ahead of me. Luckily it's spring coming up with nice weather and not about to be the middle of winter! |
I hope some exercise helps the boy!! |
