ETA: Oh, and I don't have a grinder...I've never needed one. I feed the chicken and beef frozen as they both do not like organ meat (liver particularly) when it was thawed and I had issues with one of my dogs swallowing whole quarters and not chewing the bones. It's never fun cleaning up whole chicken quarters after they made an encore appearance. They love the chicken frozen and take their time eating it. Would I have to grind the chicken for a while and feed the food thawed? |

Our Newf was never fed other than Raw and we got him at 13 weeks. He pretty much ate what the other dogs ate (just more of it )
Usually turkey necks, chicken backs and a raw mix. we now make our own raw mix - the butcher grinds the backs. you should see if yours can do that. but they can eat duck and small turkey necks when they are younger - those are amazing jaws. |
Ahhh, necks! I didn't think of that! I have access to necks, but not backs. Necks were too small for our Danes, so we went straight to quarters.
Are OES's known to have sensitive stomaches? My Danes have always been fairly sensitive to fatty meats, like duck or pork even. I have given beef knuckle bones to chew, but have to remove the excess fat (which they love) as it gives them terrible tummy upset. Maybe it was just my dogs though... |
I have a friend that has danes, and feeds raw. We do weight pull with our dogs, as well as showing in the breed ring.
They have a new pup ( Ramone), and he is fed raw right along with the big guy (Bogart). Kristen (owner of the boys) is very into this and does a lot of research. They have their own grinder, as Bogart doesn't like the chunks. Ramone is good with it, but they grind his as well. It does make measuring servings easier. She is already coveting the tripe when we butcher our steers this fall.... |
