Does anyone know of or, have a list of common danger foods and maybe garden plants as well? |
|
There are numerous substances which are unsafe for dogs:
Here is a partial list Chocolate Onions/garlic Nightshade (tomato/eggplant/rhubarb) Macadamia nuts kernels of plums/peaches/plums apple core coffee grounds potato peels Somewhere I have a more extensive list from an animal health conference, unfortunately not at my fingertips... Will post when I find it. The rule of thumb is not to assume if its safe for humans, its safe for your pet ! |
Here's a site that may be helpful with the garden plants which
are toxic--- www.uexplore.com/health/poisonplants.htm |
Sorry, I can not find my notes from the conference.
There is a good list under dog health/poisons at www.vet2pet.co.uk/dogpoisonsaz.asp Hope this is helpful... |
Pork products also!! |
I'm not so sure about garlic and I think the problem with potatoes is the eyes - not the peel. I'll check my books when I go home tonite. |
I do know from my culinary class that raw potatoes (as my chef says "green potatoes") and the eyes conatin a small amount of a poisonous substance- not harmful to humans except in large amounts. ( a defenive mechanism of the potato plant to protect it's tender new shoots and the food base for the baby plant) So don't go eating potato eyes as a snack now! As for dogs- I'm not sure...

My source stated potato peels, but you're right, Heather
its most likely the eyes. In regard to onion/garlic. They both contain thiosulphate. According to my source, onions were more toxic-can cause haemolytic anemia. I know I was surprised because the vets at the health conference did not like use of garlic. Its in some foods/treats-- so maybe in very small amounts its ok. After the lecture I made note to stay away from garlic products to be on the safe side... |
In regards to garlic, I thought it was ok to use if cooked to ward off fleas...maybe an old wife's tale. |
