Today it must have come from a bad dream. That's all I can think of. All three of us were napping and Portage lost it. He was shaking and shuddering, panting, and running all over the house. He kept grabbing at me with his front paws, and would climb on top of anything he could get onto. His heart was pounding out of control and I could not calm him down. After an hour of trying I gave him a tranquilizer. Now he's completely knocked out. I HATE doing that, but I honestly thought he was going to have a heart attack of stroke. I'm in no way exaggerating. I truly believe he was in serious danger, and there was no sign of it easing up. Hudson tried to comfort and soothe him throughout. When I tried to get him to lay down on the bed with me (usually works) Portage was so scared he kept jumping up and trying to claw his way on top of me. I got a few scratches and squealed once. Then Hudson planted himself in between us and kept guiding Portage to the end of the bed by pushing him gently with his body. He kept nuzzling him with his nose, and trying to get him to relax. Normally he would have been pouncing all over Portage, but he really seemed to sense that something was up. I cannot tell you how impressed I am with little Smudge. And, I guess I'll be calling the vet again tomorrow about Portage. Poor guy. Now that he's sleeping we won't see him awake again until tomorrow morning. And that was just HALF the prescribed tranquilizer dosage. We're taking turns snuggling him on the bed anyway, so he won't have to be alone. |

That is so bad for poor Portage.
Very good of Hudson to help out. he must be growing up |
What a darling Hudson was.
Do get Portage checked out by a vet if it was not a loud noise that set off this behaviour it could be medical, like a fit or even a heart problem etc. Hopefully just an aniexty problem, but seems strange that he all of a sudden he lost it when no loud unexpected noises. |
Just to keep me from getting too certain that things are taking a better turn with Hudson I just walked into the kitchen and found him with all four feet firmly planted on top of the kitchen table, nose in my glass of coke.
Great. All we need. Hudson hopped up on caffeine and sugar... And Portage just hobbled down, had a small dinner and a pee. Now he's pretty much in for the evening. Poor puppy. |
Ummm, good boy Hudson, I mean bad boy Hudson.
Well coke I mean yum you cant expect him to miss out on all the yummy stuff I think Hudson is a rough diamond, not interested in manners but you can count on him when you need him. |
maybe that was Hudsons way of saying 'I did good mom and you were busy helping Portage so I got my own treat! just trying to help....... '
oh well you gotta take the good with the bad and remember ...it could've been worse! |
Gotta love that Hudson! He did try to help when he was needed most. I hope Portage is ok today. Poor fella. |
Isn't it just amazing the things dogs pick up on that you would have never guessed? Hudson had to protect his big brother - good boy!!:high5: And then with the coke - he probably just thought - okay, good deed done, now back to life!:excited: What a character! |
hmm on the table? Does he spend a lot of time with Kristine's Sybil?
I find it amazing that so many people's OES get on tables. We had a miniature podle who would do this, but never an OES. My husband would lose it i am afraid |

I was about to ask her about his pedigree, but then remembered resident foster does this regularly and no chance of relativity there The best dogs don't always have the best manners. Some times they do. Then their name is probably Belle or maybe Chewie. Otherwise it some times seems that some of the most sensitive, in-tune critters often march to the drum of a different drummer, if not a whole troupe of them I've always seemed to have a "go-to" dog in times of crisis. For years it's been Belle and in small ways still is, but with her starting to slow down I realized this weekend that despite her (many!!! ) oddities, it is definitely Sybil and that underneath that rambunctious "have my own agenda, thanks anyway" exterior is one of the most perceptive, strong minded dogs I've ever known. Maybe that's how she and Hudson are similar and the table hopping is mere coincidence. I hope Kristine |

I re-read this and realized that he just wasn't table surfing, completly on the table(LOL). He is a real character. |
