Best to all in that area. I assume the AKC and others will be taking up collections for the care and sheltering of pets in that area as they did in Indiana last year. |

I have hardly watched the news, but yes, it is BAD.
The Red River is an oddity. It flows north. It also doesn't have a deep valley or gorge that it runs through. It is this river that runs through very flat ground. So, when it floods, it just spreads for MILES! It is not unusual for the Red River to flood - but this one is historic due to lots of factors this winter and spring. They have gotten a lot of snow this winter, so it is starting to melt. Then they just got really hit with this last storm. They got several inches of rain, then a ton of snow on the wrap around on the back side of the storm. My good friend Mary's daughter goes to college up there. Katie is a very athletic little thing (little blonde jock!), majoring in law enforcement. She has been sandbagging non-stop for days, along with lots of other college students. Her mom finally made her come home, she needed a break! Unfortunately, she had to drive through a blizzard Wednesday to get home. |
I think a forum member -Brenda- and Shirley, her sheepie- live in Fargo. I don't think she has been here for awhile - -hopefully all is well.
We used to live in Fargo when my husband finished his degree. I know the area well and fell horrible for the people going though this. The river is going to crest Saturday. Hopfully it won't be as high as they think.... |
I just looked, the river passed the previous flood record at 2am. Evacuations are underway.
The river is at flood stage at 18 feet. The old record was 39 feet. It currently is a bit over 40 feet, and as Stephanie said, not due to crest for a day or so. The really nasty thing, is it is COLD there. Imagine out fighting a flood in snow, wind and cold. It currently is only 14 degrees F, and not expected to get above freezing anytime soon. |
Here's a news story, along with some pictures and video coverage.

I used to live/ grew up in Grand Forks, ND and all my mom's side of the family lives in this area and Oslo MN, which literally sits on the river. We lived the thru the flood of '97 and spring flooding every year as well. My family in Oslo were expecting to become an island by tomorrow. They have a very tall dike surrounding the small town and frequently become an island during the spring season.
In my part of Texas this time of year it's fire warnings in ND it's flooding. I've taken part of many marathon sand bagging excursions. It can be rough, most people that have lived there a while know what to expect and are in generally a hardy people. U can't purposefully decide to live in a place where common February temps don't get above freezing without being hardy. Sigh, i miss the days when u would walk outside and your nose hairs would instantly freeze.... Now all i gotta worry about is being blown away by HOT wind! Ren M |
