Earth Hour?

This would be a better poll, but I don't know how to set it up.

Are you turning your lights off, or turning them ALL on for Earth Hour Saturday.

Quote:
Around a billion people living in the world's major cities are being invited to turn off their lights at 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday for "Earth Hour," described as the biggest mass campaign to demand action on climate change.

is it just lights? I mean I don't usually have lights on to watch tv anyway :sidestep:
So what exactly is turning off the lights for an hour supposed to do? Is it just a "statement" or does it have a practical purpose?

I'll probably be on the phone with Debcram Saturday night. Do I need the lights on or off for that?????
It's apparently a "vote" to tell politicians to get serious about stopping Global Warming. http://www.voteearth2009.org/home/ I guess they've been doing this for several years........word apparently hasn't gotten around,

apparently. I've never heard of it either. 8)
Well, I'm in bed by 8, so I guess you can say all the lights will be out. Plus, we'll be gone for the weekend. :P ...although one of my cats is known for jumping up to turn on and off lights.
I'll be away from home then as well, but I think I'll leave a few extra lights on.......like all the outside flood lights so any satelitte photo will show extra lights here.
Bah... I think I'd turn on extras just because.

It's ridiculous.... In my humble opinion....
This is the second year of this. Last year, Tony and I went downtown to the Chicago theater to see Mandy Patinkin. His concert started at 8 and he didn't start it til 8:15. He had gone outside to watch all the lights in Chicago go out...even the Chicago theater marquee. He then turned off all the stage lights, with the exception of a 2 regular lamps. On on the piano and one near him, so we could see him. After the hour was over, all the lights went back on. It was shocking!

I can't remember how much energy he said that one hour saved. It was pretty cool to be in the city for it.

Yep...I'll turn the lights off for 1 hour, and light candles.

Paula, you and I can have a candlelit phone call!!!
does it count if your electricity was out for 2 1/2 hours due to a wind storm??? b and i came home last night from a hockey game to our neighborhood completely dark....the clock's last time read 6:35 pm...it didnt come back on till just after 9 pm..... :?

OMG!

The energy required to collect the parrafin (from oil), manufacture and ship, buy and transport those candles, then light them and release the CO2.....

Now Ron, its a "statement" did you expect it to be reasonable? :D :D
All I can see from my house is a yard light or 2 in each direction, and the occasional car headlights. The yard lights are on a sensor, so they come on automatically.

At that time, I usually am on the computer and Todd is watching TV.....what a life on a Saturday night we have!

Although this Saturday, we may be exhausted from our new houseguest and be crashed......... 8)

:)

We were laughing last year because Chicago made it a huge event, which in turn wasted a ton of energy. I think it's a good idea and maybe headed in the right direction- but man did it get exploited last year!
We participated last year and it's great fun! I think we need more days like this which encourage you to have a relaxing night in the candlelight, focusing on being with the ones you love :D

Not quite...., but closer
well spill. I suspect I know what it is and wouldn't want to spoil your fun, but :roses:
OK, I'm going over to general chit chat......
In Winnipeg it was reported that power usage actually went up during the "event."

In fact, one of the bigwigs from the power company said that turning off all the lights in the city would not make much of an impact. It's especially cold here right now and all of our furnaces were cranked. People staying in and turning things off simply allowed us to all notice how cold we were, so we turned up the heat.

It's a cute idea...but not a useful one.

Sorry spring has yet to find your neck of the woods.
