I don't have any experience. What did your vet suggest for this?
Our Portage (11) was diagnosed with very mild anemia last summer. It was a concern as the vet said it could be a sign of something coming down the road. But we put him on senior vitamins (with extra iron) as per our vet's suggestion and he's been back to the right levels ever since. Good luck to you. I hope you find more information here. |
There are a few different underlying causes for anemia (ulcer, infection) so is your vet doing further tests to determine what is triggering it?
OES do have a genetic predisposition for an autoimmune disease of the blood called Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA), which basically means that the body is attacking its own red blood cells. While some dogs might have the predisposition, they think there is an environmental trigger that brings it on, like a reaction to an antibiotic or erlichiosis. Oscar was just tested for IMHA (Coombs Test), and he has Immune Mediated Disease, but not the specific anemia. You know the anecdote in the medical profession that says "When you hear hoofbeats, don't think zebras."? I am hoping that IMHA is the zebra, the exotic answer, and that Dixie has a more run-of-the-mill issue to deal with. Please keep us posted. Laurie and Oscar |
Thanks for your help. She just had another blood test to see if the first one was correct, and it came back with the same results. She is taking an antibiotic now, and the lethargy has diminished. We are really hoping it was just an infection. Thanks again for the comments. |
Good luck, hope its just an infection. |
Dixie has pure red blood cell aplasia. She had a bone marrow aspiration last night and had to stay over at the vets. We are trying a big dose of steroids to see how she responds. Please keep us in your prayers!!!! |
Prayers and hopes for you and Dixie |
Prayers and good wishes for Dixie and you.
Hope all goes well. |
I'm so sorry for Dixie (and for you.)
I don't know anything about this disease, but it sounds terrible. |
I wonder if Epogen would help. It is supposed to stimulate the bone marrow to produce red blood cells - in humans. Not cheap, though generics should be coming out sometime soon (patents are only good for 17 years, then anyone can produce the drug).
Thoughs and prayers headed your way. |
