Wow! She's observant too. Most dogs won't even notice that kind of thing. Are you sure she's afraid of it and not just excited by it?
Have you by chance had opportunity to shine a flashlight in her presence? Some dogs of herding breeds especially (but not exclusively) will chase the light beam. It's a game of sorts, though there's generally an obsessive-compulsive component to it. There are various thoughts on why it occurs including that it may have started in response to stress and/or boredom and the dog may have learned that doing so reduces stress. (Much like a person with an obsessive-compulsive disorder) A border collie I used to take agility class with chased shadows. You try not to encourage the behavior by interrupting them and diverting their attention, but some times it's so ingrained that can be hard to do. Deaf dogs (of any breed) seem to have a higher incidence of this kind of behavior, perhaps because they have learned to rely more on their visual senses than hearing dogs do. I've never heard of a dog who was afraid of light (beams) though, so if it really is fear based, that's a different story. Kristine |
Bailee (6 1/2 mths) had us all in stitches last week. Our Grandson was over for a visit and was shining his little red laser pointer on the floor, walls, etc. Bailee went nuts! He wasn't the least bit afraid, just wanted to catch it I guess. Jumped, ran around, pounced, you name it he did it. Never did catch that thing though. |
I've owned a few cats who chase reflected light and laser beams.
But it was hunting behaviour not fear. |
